NEWS ALERT: BFI Celebrate Star Wars Day – Saturday 13 December NEWS ALERT: BFI celebrate Star Wars Day – Saturday 13 December Tuesday 28 October 2014, London As part of the BFI’s three-month blockbuster season, Sci-Fi: Days of Fear and Wonder presented together with O2, the BFI will be celebrating STAR WARS DAY on Saturday 13 December 2014, with special guests to be announced in due course. As the UK continues to play a major role in the production of JJ Abrams’ forthcoming STAR WARS film, the BFI are taking audiences back to the very beginning with a very special day dedicated to the mother of all Space Operas. STAR WARS DAY on Saturday 13 December 2014 will comprise of screenings of the special editions of STAR WARS EPISODE IV: A NEW HOPE (1977), STAR WARS EPISODE V: THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK (1980) and STAR WARS EPISODE VI: RETURN OF THE JEDI (1983), plus special guests (TBA). Prizes will be given to audience members who dress to impress, and at the end of the night there will be a themed DJ set and space inspired cocktails in benugo, which will be transformed into the BFI’s own Mos Eisley Cantina. Throughout the Sci-Fi season fans will also be able to take a look behind the scenes with a unique exhibition. ON-SET: STAR WARS EPISODE IV: A NEW HOPE (Until 4 Jan, BFI Southbank Atrium) will provide a rare opportunity to see one of the treasures of the BFI National Archive: an original shooting script for EPISODE IV: A NEW HOPE. The script was donated to the BFI by the film’s continuity supervisor Ann Skinner, and as such includes extensive shooting notes, deleted scenes and unique Polaroid photographs which give a fascinating insight into the making of the film. Never before seen pages and photographs from the script will be on display, exploring the style of the film as well as the highly-skilled work that that went into creating one of the most enduring and influential Sci-Fi films ever made. – ENDS – NOTES TO EDITORS: Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (special edition) USA 1977. Darth Vader’s link to Luke is dramatically revealed in a light sabre battle, leaving Luke with a choice to make between the Jedi force and the power of the Sith. Han becomes jealous of Luke and Leia’s growing closeness and Luke reveals he has more family alive. A brief comparison study of the two giants of mainstream sci-fi, Star Wars and Star Trek reveals the differing attitudes toward religion expressed in the genre. Star Trek presents an evolving perspective, from critical secular humanism to begrudging personalized faith, while Star Wars presents an ambiguous mythological foundation for mystical experience that is in more ways universal.     "It's aimed at kids - the kid in everybody": George Lucas, Star Wars and Children's Entertainment By Peter Krämer, University of East Anglia, UK When Star Wars was released in May 1977, Time magazine hailed it as "The Year's Best Movie" and characterised the special quality of the film with the statement: "It's aimed at kids - the kid in everybody" (Anon., 1977). Many film scholars, highly critical of the aesthetic and ideological preoccupations of Star Wars and of contemporary Hollywood cinema in general, have elaborated on the second part in Time magazine's formula. They have argued that Star Wars is indeed aimed at "the kid in everybody", that is it invites adult spectators to regress to an earlier phase in their social and psychic development and to indulge in infantile fantasies of omnipotence and oedipal strife as well as nostalgically returning to an earlier period in history (the 1950s) when they were kids and the world around them could be imagined as a better place. For these scholars, much of post-1977 Hollywood cinema is characterised by such infantilisation, regression and nostalgia (see, for example, Wood, 1985). I will return to this ideological critique at the end of this essay. For now, however, I want to address a different set of questions about production and marketing strategies as well as actual audiences: What about the first part of Time magazine's formula? Was Star Wars aimed at children? If it was, how did it try to appeal to them, and did it succeed? I am going to address these questions first of all by looking forward from 1977 to the status Star Wars has achieved in the popular culture of the late 1990s.
