However, where does God fit in your thanksgiving? We should thank God for everything we have, but we should also thank Him for simply being God and offering us eternal salvation with Him. We should thank God for the gift of the Holy Eucharist, and we can do that by attending Mass as often as possible. The Eucharist is the center of our faith because through it we embrace the very body, blood, soul, and divinity of Jesus Christ and become one with Him. We celebrate the Roman Rite liturgy at Saints James and Patrick, so you’ll notice a couples differences between the Roman Rite and Maronite Rite. For example, the Maronite Mass is spoken in Aramaic - the language Jesus spoke - for the Eucharistic Prayer and responses. Due to some scheduling issues with Advent by Candlelight, we’re doing an all-parish events that combines that best features from both Advent by Candlelight and Couples’ Night Out. There will be beautiful table décor, good food, camaraderie with other parishioners, and an Advent reflection to prepare our hearts and home for Christmas. The Advent committee will be doing their usual table decorations, but this event will take place at the Beach House, which will provide the food.

Ronald N. Beshara Page 2 of 27 OUR PAST ... Maronite history has its origins in Antioch where the early Christians received their faith from Saint Peter after he fled persecutions in Jerusalem. According to Acts 11:26 the followers of Christ were called Christians for the first time in Antioch. The seat of the Church remained there for 7 years before being transferred to Rome. Prior to 741 there were 7 Syro-Catholic Popes, 5 of them were Syro-Maronites. Antioch was a Hellenistic city while Edessa to the Northeast maintained a Syriac-Aramaic culture followed by the Christians who later were to be called Maronite. Their tradition followed the language, theology and liturgy of Christ and His Apostles thus reflecting their mentality. After divisions and persecutions the Christians gradually migrated to the safety of the mountains in Lebanon. Thus the liturgical roots of the Maronite Church can be traced to Antioch and Edessa. In the 4th century Saint Maron, a friend of Saint John Chrysostom, fought the heresies that beset the Catholic Church at that time, particularly Arianism, Monophysitism and Nestorianism. His monastery became the principal center of pastoral and spiritual care for the area. The monks and followers, then called Maronites, were continually called upon and willing to sacrifice their lives for their religious convictions.

    Vadim B. Prozorov Moscow THE PASSION OF ST. DOMNIUS: THE TRADITION OF APOSTOLIC SUCCESSION IN DALMATIA St. Domnius (Lat. Domnius, Domnio, Ital. Doimo, Croat Dujam, Duje) was, in fact still is, the holy protector of the metropolis of Salona-Spalato. Late antique Salona, the capital city of the Roman province of Dalmatia was a very important Christian centre in the Mediterranean region without any exaggeration comparable with Ravenna and Aquileia in Italy.1 Spalato (Croat Split) originated very close to ancient Salona and indeed was her successor in respect to ecclesiastical authority when Salona perished in the seventh century. The early history of the Church of Salona is mainly known due two me- dieval Histories — the History of Archbishops of Salona and Spalato written in the mid-thirteenth century by Archdeacon Thomas of Spalato and the anony- mous History of Archbishops of Salona whose earliest manuscript dates back to the early sixteenth century. The latter finishes its narrative in 1185 while the former continues to the middle of the thirteenth century. Both texts are almost identical except some vital interpolations added to the History of Arch- bishops of Salona. Both Histories, the common text as well as supplementary documents, glorified the Church of Spalato and enhanced its apostolic foundation and old metropolitan status. Who else but a bishop-saint, a bishop-martyr could be a more positive proof of the apostolicity of this Church!
