Fathers of the Church, Part 2: The Latin (or Western) Fathers A previous In Focus explored some of the great Fathers of the Eastern, or Greek, Church. This week the Latin (Western) Fathers are highlighted. While there is no official list of the Fathers, since the fifth century the criteria for selection has been that the individuals lived holy lives, were orthodox in their teachings and writings, lived during antiquity (the first through seventh centuries) and have been approved by the Church. According to some historians, there are more than 100 total Church Fathers (East and West); many of the same names are found on the different lists. The Fathers helped define, establish and promote the dogmas of the Catholic faith. They not only explained and advanced Christianity, but they stood against those who would defame, deny or exploit our Lord, Jesus Christ. This author is not able to adequately measure or describe the sanctity of these men, who were popes, bishops, theologians, apologists and writers. Some are saints, and all gave themselves in the service of the Lord. Here are a handful among the giants from the Western Church who have the title Church Father. They are categorized by those who lived just before the Council of Nicea, those in the era of Nicea and those after the council, up through the seventh century. Constantinople – formerly the city of Byzantium and now present- day Istanbul . Rome – declined in power and prestige during the barbarian invasions (A.D. 378-570) while the papacy emerged as the stable center of a chaotic world o Roman Emperor Constantine issued the Edict of Milan in A.D. 313 which legalized Christianity – it was no longer a capital crime to be Christian o A.D. 380 Christianity became the official state religion – Paganism was outlawed o The Christian Patriarchs (Jerusalem, Antioch, Alexandria, Rome, and Constantinople) . -

The Maronite Voice A Publication of the Maronite Eparchies in the USA Volume VIII Issue No. VII July - August 2012 Where In The World Would You Find the Freedom That We Have In This United States of America? Dear Friends: s you know, both myself and Bishop Gregory were in Lebanon Afor approximately three weeks in June to attend the Annual Maronite Bishops’ Synod and various meetings. It was a great experience for both, receiving and sharing ideas with other Maronite Bishops from around the world. On my return, as the plane flew over American soil, I began to reflect on the various countries which we passed over. My heart went out to the people of Syria, Iraq and Jordan in the Middle East where there is persecution and heartache. I realized more and more, in that part of the world where Jesus began His teachings, the people endure much danger and are even losing the faith that has been instilled in them from Apostolic times. This is due to the environment in which they live. Except for Lebanon, there is no freedom, no liberty, no justice for all, as we enjoy in this great country. I begin to ask, do our people appreciate what we have in this great land? Yes, we are not perfect, but we must remind our immigrants and natural citizens alike, that despite our defects, where in the world would you find the freedom that we have in this United States of America? Let us thank God for his goodness to all of us for we are able to live in the land of the " FREE and the HOME of the BRAVE." During this time of the year as we celebrate the Fourth of July, let us thank God for all those who continue to work and sacrifice to make this the greatest country in the world. -

Ronald N. Beshara Page 2 of 27 OUR PAST ... Maronite history has its origins in Antioch where the early Christians received their faith from Saint Peter after he fled persecutions in Jerusalem. According to Acts 11:26 the followers of Christ were called Christians for the first time in Antioch. The seat of the Church remained there for 7 years before being transferred to Rome. Prior to 741 there were 7 Syro-Catholic Popes, 5 of them were Syro-Maronites. Antioch was a Hellenistic city while Edessa to the Northeast maintained a Syriac-Aramaic culture followed by the Christians who later were to be called Maronite. Their tradition followed the language, theology and liturgy of Christ and His Apostles thus reflecting their mentality. After divisions and persecutions the Christians gradually migrated to the safety of the mountains in Lebanon. Thus the liturgical roots of the Maronite Church can be traced to Antioch and Edessa. In the 4th century Saint Maron, a friend of Saint John Chrysostom, fought the heresies that beset the Catholic Church at that time, particularly Arianism, Monophysitism and Nestorianism. His monastery became the principal center of pastoral and spiritual care for the area. The monks and followers, then called Maronites, were continually called upon and willing to sacrifice their lives for their religious convictions. -

October 14, 2012 Sunday Sermon Fr Ambrose Young Entrance of the Theotokos into the Temple Skete The Holy Fathers of the 7th Council Titus 3:8-15 Luke 8:5-15 In the Name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen. On this Sunday the Church celebrates the Holy Fathers of the Seventh Ecumenical Council and asks us to reflect upon that Council and also the whole concept we Orthodox have of what we constantly refer to as “the Holy Fathers”. This Council of the Church—the last general universal Council of Holy Orthodoxy--was held in the year 787 and dealt with the whole controversy surrounding the use of sacred images or icons. This is an important Council for us to know about because in the West, at the time of the Protestant Reformation, images in churches were severely criticized and in many cases destroyed and forbidden. To this day most Protestant churches are very bereft and bare of sacred imagery other than the Cross, and some do not even have a Cross. Mormons even see the Cross as an emblem of shame and do not make use of it in their churches and temples, nor do they wear a cross. Even some very modern Catholic Churches—perhaps in order not to offend Protestants?—have gone in the direction of stripping themselves of sacred art of all kinds. But in Orthodoxy we continue to preserve and cherish our rich tradition of iconography and other forms of sacred art, seeing these as both theologically and spiritually necessary and also an essential component of ancient Christian civilization. -

Father Tony Saab Joseph P
Saint George Maronite Church Welcomes Father Tony Saab Joseph P. Checrallah, Jr. On October 1, 2020, the Family of Saint George Maronite Catholic Church welcomed Father Tony Saab as our new Pastor replacing Father Edward Nedder, who retired after serving as Pastor for almost 15 years. Father Tony was born in Beirut, Lebanon. He came to the United States in 1982. He completed his Graduate Studies in Theology at Boston College majoring in Scripture in 1993. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1997 by Patriarch Beshara Rai in Byblos, Lebanon. He was assigned as Pastor of Saint Anthony of the Desert Church in Mastita-Byblos, Lebanon where a beautiful Church for the Saint was built between 2004-2008. During his years of ministry in Byblos, Father Tony served as the Diocesan Spiritual Director of the Youth as well as the Diocesan Spiritual Director of "Faith and Light" ministering to those with special needs and mentally challenged. Between 1998 and 2008, Father Tony also worked as Professor of Cultural Studies at the Lebanese American University in Byblos, Lebanon. His position gave him a great opportunity to reach out and bring Christ to Lebanon’s youth and College students. He also taught at Notre Dame University (Louaize, Lebanon) as an educator of religious studies in Catholicism, Philosophy, and Education. Father Tony joined the Eparchy of Brooklyn in 2015 and served as an administrator at Saint George Church in Dover, NH. He was assigned as Pastor at Saint Maron Church in Torrington, CT in October of 2016. Father Tony looks forward to his new assignment and is excited to lead our Parish. -

Those who had spent time elsewhere in the U.S. found predominantly rural and predominantly Protestant South Carolina to be almost as alien as they or their parents had found the United States due partly to the religious differences and partly to the cultural differences between the Northeast, where most of them had lived for at least a few years after arriving in the United States, and the Southeast. -
