Sesame Street Meets Peachtree When Top Puppeteers Arrive ATLANTA – July 27, 2015 – Edward James Olmos, Nichelle Nichols, Peter Mayhew, Felicia Day, John Barrowman, David Ramsey, and Stephen Amell head an all-star guest list of more than 400 actors, authors, artists and other creators appearing at Dragon Con 2015, Atlanta’s internationally known pop culture, fantasy, sci-fi and gaming convention. Nichols, who broke barriers as Lt. Uhura in the original Star Trek television series, will serve as Grand Marshall of the annual Dragon Con Parade. Two doctors from the long-running BBC series Dr. Who – Sylvester McCoy and Paul McGann, the seventh and eight doctors, respectively – will appear together at this year’s Dragon Con. And, at this year’s Dragon Con, Sesame Street meets Peachtree. Famed puppeteer Carroll Spinney, who recently retired after 45 years performing Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch will appear along with the puppeteers behind other Sesame Street favorites including Abby Cadabby and Grundgetta. (While the puppeteers will be on hand, the characters will not.) Cheryl Henson, daughter of the late Jim Henson and president of the Jim Henson Foundation, will also join us for Dragon Con. More than 65,000 people are expected to attend Dragon Con 2015, filling downtown Atlanta over the four-day Labor Day weekend, September 4 to September 7, with events and activities across AmericasMart Building #2 and five host hotels – Hyatt Regency Atlanta, Marriott Marquis, Hilton Atlanta, Westin Peachtree and Sheraton Atlanta. “We’re very excited about this year’s guest list. We have attracted guests from some of the best shows on television today, including Arrow, Game of Thrones, Marvel’s Agents of Shield, and Once Upon A Time,” convention co-chair Rachel Reeves said. “We also have guests from fan favorite shows from recent years, such as Warehouse 13 and classic sci-fi shows such as Doctor Who.” Main cast members from several popular broadcast network and cable shows such as Fox’s Sleepy Hollow, CW’s Arrow, CW’s The Flash, HBO’s Game of Thrones, CW’s The 100, Syfy’s Defiance, Syfy’s Ghost Hunters and the Showcase series Lost Girl will be on hand. Other shows represented include ABC’s Once Upon A Time, FX’s American Horror Story, Fox’s Fringe, NBC’s Hannibal, and NBC’s Continuum. Classic television is also well represented this year. Guests from popular shows such as Doctor Who, Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, Torchwood, Mystery Science Theater 3000, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the Battlestar Galactica franchise, the Stargate franchise and the Star Trek franchise will attend panels and sign memorabilia and photographs for their fans. Movies are not to be forgotten. Peter Mayhew, Chewbacca from the Star Wars trilogies, Keir Dullea and Gary Lockwood from Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 masterpiece 2001 Space Odyssey, and Academy-award nominated character actor Graham Greene, whose credits include Dances With Wolves, The Green Mile, Maverick, The Twilight Saga and Northern Exposure. Julian Glover, who plays Grand Maester Pycelle on Game of Thrones, is a veteran film actor. He has appeared as grail hunter Walter Donovan in Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade, General Veers in Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, and villainous double agent Aristotle Kristatos in For Your Eyes Only. From Peter Jackson’s Middle Earth, John Noble appeared in the final installment of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, while Peter Hambleton, Stephen Hunter and Dean O’Gorman appeared in The Hobbit trilogy.     Women's Experimental Autobiography from Counterculture Comics to Transmedia Storytelling: Staging Encounters Across Time, Space, and Medium Dissertation Presented in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Ohio State University Alexandra Mary Jenkins, M.A. Graduate Program in English The Ohio State University 2014 Dissertation Committee: Jared Gardner, Advisor Sean O’Sullivan Robyn Warhol Copyright by Alexandra Mary Jenkins 2014 Abstract Feminist activism in the United States and Europe during the 1960s and 1970s harnessed radical social thought and used innovative expressive forms in order to disrupt the “grand perspective” espoused by men in every field (Adorno 206). Feminist student activists often put their own female bodies on display to disrupt the disembodied “objective” thinking that still seemed to dominate the academy. The philosopher Theodor Adorno responded to one such action, the “bared breasts incident,” carried out by his radical students in Germany in 1969, in an essay, “Marginalia to Theory and Praxis.” In that essay, he defends himself against the students’ claim that he proved his lack of relevance to contemporary students when he failed to respond to the spectacle of their liberated bodies. He acknowledged that the protest movements seemed to offer thoughtful people a way “out of their self-isolation,” but ultimately, to replace philosophy with bodily spectacle would mean to miss the “infinitely progressive aspect of the separation of theory and praxis” (259, 266). Lisa Yun Lee argues that this separation continues to animate contemporary feminist debates, and that it is worth returning to Adorno’s reasoning, if we wish to understand women’s particular modes of theoretical ii insight in conversation with “grand perspectives” on cultural theory in the twenty-first century.

    Indie TV: Innovation in series development DRAFT Aymar Jean Christian Northwestern Univeristy I spent five years interviewing creators of American web series, or independent television online,1 speaking with 134 producers and executives making and releasing scripted series independent of traditional network investment. No two series or creators were ever alike. Some were sci-fi comedies created by Trekkers, others urban dramas by black women. Nevertheless nearly every creator differentiated their work and products from traditional television in some way. Strikingly, whenever I ask if any particular creator inspired them to develop their own show independently, I heard one response more than any other: Felicia Day. Indie TV creators revere Day for her innovation in production and distribution: she developed a hit franchise, The Guild, outside network development processes. The Guild, a sitcom about a diverse group of gamers who sit at computers all day to play an MMORPG in the style of World of Warcraft, ran for six seasons, from 2007 to 2013, and spawned a music video, DVDs, comic books, a companion book, as well as marshaled the passions of hundreds of thousands of fans. By the end of its run, The Guild had amassed over 330,000 subscribers on YouTube, though it could also be seen on other portals. In my work I have seen The Guild emerge as central to the online indie TV industry’s case for itself as antidote to what ails Hollywood. Day initially pitched to Christian, A.J. (forthcoming). In 1960 (I was sixteen), we didn’t have a television, and I had to prevail upon my school-friends to let me cycle round to their houses every alternate Thursday to watch this series. 1 Now, I can sit in my armchair and watch it straight through on my computer on DVD, with sound coming through the headphones. It taught me what Shakespeare was about, and I’ve never forgotten it. Over ten years ago, seeing that it was on at the NFT, I went down to see some odd bits. Approaching Michael Hayes, the director, I said, “What you did here provided me with the single most important cultural event of my life”. He looked at me suspiciously: “You seem a bit young to say that”, he said, and turned away. I went up to Peter Dews, the producer: “What you did here provided me with the single most important cultural event of my life” – “Good!” he grunted, and turned away. So much for the creative team. Were they really as boring as that in 1960? (In fact Dews died shortly after our brief chat.) Paul Daneman said in an accompanying NFT lecture that the cast spent every morning talking, and didn’t start rehearsals till after lunch.
