This declaration Icomes to recognize the exceptional value of our city, and shows that our beautiful Alcalá is not only of the Alcalaínos, but of all humanity, so from that December the 2nd 1998 we acquired the commitment to preserve it for the enjoyment and knowledge of all the inhabitants of the planet and all the generations to come. This recognition is not the result of chance, nor is it a follow up of an event in which the heritage of our ancestors is exclusively recognized, quite the contrary, it is the story of some neighbours who love their city and know its important value, that overcame adversity, which came in the form of unfair closures or wars, and fought for years to recover the essence and character of Alcalá. Thus, the work begun by the Condueños in the mid-nineteenth century continued for decades, printed in the feeling of all Complutenses and led to a recovery of the essence of the city in the last third of the twentieth century, especially after the recognition of Alcalá as an Artistic Historic Site and especially with the return of the University. But perhaps the most beautiful thing that happened in those troubled years was the integration into the soul of the city of the tens of thousands of new neighbours who came to Alcalá attracted by the progress and the industry. Those new Complutenses began to feel like the city that opened the doors to them was theirs, and the pride of feeling like heirs of such a singular past caught their hearts, so when a few years later the local and university administrations promoted the recognition of Alcalá as a World Heritage City, the residents of Alcalá –massively– became enthusiastic, supporting the administrations to achieve a common dream. That excitement, which was transformed into a collective effort, was substantiated in a document in which the merits of the candidacy of Alcalá and its exceptional universal value were exposed to UNESCO. A document that was the result of joint work between the technicians of the University and the City Council, which is a reflection of the understanding between the heads of both institutions, and that also, had the collaboration and massive support of the civil society Complutense. This is the text that today, twenty years after those events, we make available to all of you through this publication, a book that recovers that file as it was written so that it can be known by all citizens, so that Heritage Spirit that permeated us in 1998 continues to be as alive today as it was then. I trust that the publication is to your liking and that you enjoy the book as much as I have. Javier Rodríguez Alcalde de Alcalá de Henares 9 he 20th Anniversary of the declaration of the University of Alcalá and the historic university city of Alcalá de Henares as a World Heritage Site T(1998/2018) is a good opportunity to look back and commemorate the event. That is the aim of this publication, which includes the document prepared by the technical teams of the University and of Alcalá de Henares City Hall and presented to UNESCO and the Regional Government of Madrid in their bid to be part of the World Heritage List. Its pages reveal the uniqueness of this city which Cardinal Cisneros, founder of our University (1499), conceived and built as the first planned university city (“The City of Knowledge”) of the Modern Age, a model which would be imitated by other countries in Europe and America and become a centre of academic excellence, an example of cultural integration and a benchmark of the universal projection of the Spanish language. Receiving the accolade from UNESCO was, without doubt, a reward for the effort and tenacity of many that preceded us, from the Sociedad de Condueños, which fought to prevent the plundering of the so-called “foundational” or “Cisnerian” block in 1850, to the different managers of the University of Alcalá, who have worked from its re-foundation in 1977 to ensure that its original founder’s legacy has lasted to today.

Tres escritos de Josep Maria Gudiol i Ricart. Barcelona: Arturo Ramón i Manuel Barbié, 1987. [transcripció] Returning from an excursion to the south of France, I arrived at Barcelona on the night of July 17, 193[6], accompanying Professor Chandler R. Post, of Harvard University. On the morning of the next day, with Dr. Walter S. Cook, Director of the Institute of Fine Arts, we visited the Museu d’Art de Catalunya, deciding on a very interesting investigative archeological journey through the north of Spain that we had planned for months, agreeing to begin it on the following Monday, July 20. I left them at the Hotel Colón, and I went to Torrellas de Llobregat, to spend the weekend with my family. Torellas is a little town 20 kilometers from Barcelona, The first rumors had quickly arrived there over the radio about the events, notices and surprising and contradictory proclamations. They talked about battles, fires and crimes, without saying anything definitive yet. The commentaries, transmitted from town to town, asserted that not even the greatest historic-artistic jewels had escaped the flames, that the famous churches of Belén, El Pino and Santa María del Mar, Santa Ana and many other marvels of old Barcelona were burning and that the same thing was happening to churches all over our country.

In the first place, there exists in the expert or “connoisseur” a first impression, in which mingle visual memories of other works by the master, with the consequential emotional effect and the observation of the particular formal features inherent in a determined artistic tendency; the basic elimination of the possibility that the works of art could belong to a follower of the master’s style implies a profound analysis of each of the motives causing artistic forms and the personal ways of making them, as well as details of the execution itself. This process has been followed when these sculptures of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, belonging to the IOMR collection, have been studied and I believe they have passed the analysis with the absolute conviction that they can be fully attributed to Alonso Berruguete (Fig 1).

  • The Iconography of St. Francis in the Work of El Greco and His Workshop: Typology, Variants, Derivatives
Józef Grabski Kraków–Wien, IRSA Institute for Art Historical Research The Iconography of St. Francis in the Work of El Greco and His Workshop: Typology, Variants, Derivatives he iconography of St. Francis is of great interest for us, especially because of the painting rediscovered at Kosów Lacki in 1964.1 It is interesting to analyse and consider this painting against the broad background of this saint’s iconography, Tand compare it with all other known versions of this theme. The Franciscan iconography in the work of El Greco was the subject of research of almost all El Greco scholars, since the production of different representations of the Saint from Assisi by the artist and his Toledo workshop was extremely prolific. Today, about two hundred works related to El Greco’s Franciscan invention are known. These are works executed by himself, his son Jorge Manuel and other assistants, as well as those carried out by his followers throughout the 17th century, and even later. It was especially José Camón Aznar2 and José Gudiol3 who tried to put this enormous group of paintings in order. They gathered over 130 paintings representing St. Francis, trying to determine which of them were autographed works executed by his assistants and workshop, as well as by later followers, copyists and forgers. And it was Harold Wethey,4 in his crucial El Greco monograph, who DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.15633/9788374385114.06 1 Katalog zabytków sztuki w Polsce, X: Województwo warszawskie, red. I. Galicka, H. Distributed under Creative Commons CC-BY 3.0 Abstract Our paper analyses how museums not only play a traditional role in the cultural service but also act as a driving force for the use of science and technology in the conservation of artworks. Through a bibliometric approach and the use of social network analysis (SNA), we explore co-authorship of scientific articles and we detect how museums look for knowledge bases in science and technology. We also differentiate between institutions and geographical regions in order to find patterns in the cooperation with other institutions. Results indicate that European countries are important nodes in the cooperation for restoration and conservation, and patterns of cooperation indicate that museums look for knowledge bases mainly in restoration institutes and other museums in their own countries. This implies that museums look for analytical and synthetic knowledge out of the museums when they need to apply advanced science and technology in restoration.
