Unfortunately, the collapse in oil prices beginning in 2014 and the transition to spot market pricing for natural gas over the last three years revealed the weaknesses of this economic model. Because Algeria has not meaningfully diversified its economy since 2014, oil and gas production is even more essential than ever before to the government’s revenue base and political stability. Today’s conjoined global health and economic crises, coupled with persistent declining production levels, have therefore placed Algeria’s oil and gas industry, and the country, at a critical juncture where it requires ample foreign investment and effective technology transfer. One path to the future includes undertaking new oil and gas projects in partnership with international companies (large and small) to revitalize production. The other path, marked by inertia and institutional resistance to change, leads to oil and gas production levels in ten years that will be half of today's production levels. After two decades of autocracy, Algeria’s recent passage of a New Hydrocarbons Law seems to indicate that the country may choose the path of partnership by profoundly changing its tax and investment laws in the hydrocarbons sector to re-attract international oil companies. -

Minimizing fluid invasion is a major issue while drilling reservoir rocks. Large invasion may create several problems in sampling reservoir fluids in exploratory wells. Unreliable sampling may lead to wrong reservoir evaluation and, in critical cases, to wrong decisions concerning reservoir exploitability. Besides, drilling fluid invasion may also provoke irreversible reservoir damage, reducing its initial and /or its long term productivity (Ladva et al., 2000). Such problem can be critical in heavy oil reservoirs, where oil and filtrate interaction can generate stable emulsions. Invasion in light oil reservoir is less critical due to its good mobility properties. Other critical scenario is the low permeability gas reservoirs where imbibition effects may result in deep invasion. A common practice in the industry is the addition of bridging agents, such as calcium carbonates in the drilling fluid composition. -

PATRICIA SOBECKY A THESIS Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in the Department of Geological Sciences in the Graduate School of The University of Alabama TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA 2013 Copyright Erika Kristine Rentschler 2013 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT Approximately 4.9 million gallons of crude oil traveled with ocean currents to reach the Gulf coast after the Deepwater Horizon oil drilling rig explosion. Microcosm experiments were conducted to determine how oil contamination affects the concentration and distribution (between solid and aqueous phases) of trace elements in a salt marsh environment. Sediment and seawater from a salt marsh at Bayou La Batre, Alabama, were measured into jars and spiked with 500 ppm MC-252 oil. The solid phase and aqueous samples were analyzed by ICP-OES, ICP- MS, and IC. A second experiment was conducted using various concentrations (0 ppm, 10 ppm, 100 ppm, 500 ppm, 1000 ppm, 2500 ppm) of MC252 oil. ICP-OES data show variations in aqueous elemental concentrations occurred over the 14 day experiment. The pH for the water in the experiments ranged from 6.93 to 8.06. Significant positive correlations (r>0.75) were found in the solid phase samples between iron and the following elements: aluminum, cobalt, chromium, and nickel. Aqueous iron concentrations were highly correlated (r>0.75) with solution pH. The presence of iron oxide and clays in the salt marsh sediment indicates potential for adsorption of trace elements sourced from the environment and from crude oil contamination. -

Oil Prices In December 2019, OPEC Reference Basket increased by 5.7% or $3.6/bbl from the previous month level to stand at $66.5/bbl. Improved oil fundamental balances and continued market stabilization efforts conducted under OPEC+ Declaration of Cooperation, as well as easing trade tensions between the US and China were major stimulus for the increase in oil prices during the month of December 2019 to reach its highest monthly level since April 2019. Supply and Demand World oil demand in December 2019, decreased by 1.6 million b/d or 1.6% from the previous month level to reach 100.3 million b/d. Demand in OECD countries decreased by 2.3% comparing with the previous month to reach 47.3 million b/d. And demand in Non-OECD countries decreased by 0.9% comparing with their previous month level to reach 53 million b/d. World oil supplies in December 2019, decreased by 100 thousand b/d or 0.1% comparing with the previous month to reach 101.8 million b/d. 1 Non-OPEC supplies remained stable at the same previous month level of 67.2 million b/d. Whereas preliminary estimates show that OPEC crude oil and NGLs/condensates total supplies decreased by 0.6% comparing with the previous month to reach 34.5 million b/d. -

After working for Industry for five years, he began his involvement with oil shale in 1948 when he joined the U.S. Bureau of Mines and was assigned to Rifle, Colorado, to work at Anvil Points. During the middle fifties, he was assigned to the Atomic Energy Com mission to study the extraction of ura nium from the Chattanooga Shales in Tennessee. He became Research Director of the U.S. Bureau ofMines in 1967 and served in this capacity until he retired in 1979. During these years his involvement with oil shale intensified.
