  • 1 Oxford Stadium
Oxford Stadium – Factual Report and Assessment of Significance for Oxford Heritage Assets Register Review Panel Introduction and Background Oxford Stadium has been nominated by the public as a potential addition to the Oxford Heritage Assets Register. The register is a locally maintained list of non-designated heritage assets that the Council have recognised as having a degree of significance meriting consideration in planning decisions because of their heritage interest as described in the National Planning Policy Framework. Inclusion of non-designated heritage assets on the register is dependent on their fulfilling criteria adopted by the City Council and will be subject to review by a panel of City Councillors prior to adoption. An adopted nomination form sets out grounds on which a nominated heritage asset may be deemed to fulfil these conditions. For further details of the Oxford Heritage Assets Register, the criteria and nomination, review and adoption process please see the project website at: http://www.oxford.gov.uk/PageRender/decP/HeritageAssetRegister.htm This report has been prepared to inform the review of the nomination of the Greyhound Stadium for registration as a heritage asset. It includes details of Greyhound Stadia as a class of historic place, information about the development history of the site and surrounding area and a review of the history and architecture of the greyhound stadium. The concluding section provides a review of the greyhound stadium using the nomination form and criteria for the heritage assets register to consider where it might have heritage interest, heritage value and significance. Consultees are invited to provide information to enhance the accuracy of the information provided and may comment on the assessment of the Greyhound Stadium’s significance to inform the Council’s review of its nomination.

  • The Works Brass Band – a Historical Directory of the Industrial and Corporate Patronage and Sponsorship of Brass Bands
The works brass band – a historical directory of the industrial and corporate patronage and sponsorship of brass bands Gavin Holman, January 2020 Preston Corporation Tramways Band, c. 1910 From the earliest days of brass bands in the British Isles, they have been supported at various times and to differing extents by businesses and their owners. In some cases this support has been purely philanthropic, but there was usually a quid pro quo involved where the sponsor received benefits – e.g. advertising, income from band engagements, entertainment for business events, a “worthwhile” pastime for their employees, corporate public relations and brand awareness - who would have heard of John Foster’s Mills outside of the Bradford area if it wasn’t for the Black Dyke Band? One major sponsor and supporter of brass bands, particularly in the second half of the 19th century, was the British Army, through the Volunteer movement, with upwards of 500 bands being associated with the Volunteers at some time – a more accurate estimate of these numbers awaits some further analysis. However, I exclude these bands from this paper, to concentrate on the commercial bodies that supported brass bands. I am also excluding social, civic, religious, educational and political organisations’ sponsorship or support. In some cases it is difficult to determine whether a band, composed of workers from a particular company or industry was supported by the business or not. The “workmen’s band” was often a separate entity, supported by a local trade union or other organisation. For the purposes of this review I will be including them unless there is specific reference to a trade union or other social organisation.

  • History of Jaguar Cars
Jaguar History Jaguar Cars (Brand of Jaguar Land Rover) Jaguar Cars (/ˈdʒæɡjuː.ər/ JAG-ew-ər) is a brand of Jaguar Land Rover,[6] a British multinational car manufacturer headquartered in Whitley, Coventry, England, owned by Tata Motors[1][2][3][7] since 2008. Founded 1922 by Sir William Lyons and William Walmsley Jaguar was founded as the Swallow Sidecar Company in 1922, originally making motorcycle sidecars before developing passenger cars. The name was changed to Jaguar after World War II to avoid the unfavorable connotations of the SS initials.[8] Sale to The British Motor Corporation followed in 1966, the resulting enlarged company now being renamed as British Motor Holdings (BMH), which in 1968 merged with Leyland Motor Corporation and became British Leyland, itself to be nationalized in 1975. Jaguar was de-merged from British Leyland and was listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1984, becoming a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index until it was acquired by Ford in 1990.[9] Jaguar has, in recent years, manufactured cars for the British Prime Minister, the most recent delivery being an XJ in May 2010.[10] The company also holds royal warrants from Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Charles.[11] Jaguar cars today are designed in Jaguar Land Rover's engineering centers at the Whitley plant in Coventry and at their Gaydon site in Warwickshire, and are manufactured in Jaguar's Castle Bromwich assembly plant in Birmingham with some manufacturing expected to take place in the Solihull plant. In September 2013 Jaguar Land Rover announced plans to open a 100 million GBP (160 million USD) research and development center in Warwick, United Kingdom to create a next generation of vehicle technologies.
