Played July 13, 1954 at Cleveland Municipal Stadium in Cleveland in front of a crowd of 69, 751, the two all-star clubs combined for a record-setting offensive explosion. The AL stars rallied in the bottom of the eighth inning to win 11–9, a slugfest in which the teams combined for an All-Star Game record 20 runs, on 31 hits. There were six home runs hit, two of them by hometown star Al Rosen, who went 3-for-4 with five runs batted in. Early on, there was no hint of the fireworks to come. Starters Whitey Ford and Robin Roberts pitched scoreless ball until the third inning. In the bottom of the third, Minnie Miñoso opened with a single and Nellie Fox walked.
