Played July 13, 1954 at Cleveland Municipal Stadium in Cleveland in front of a crowd of 69, 751, the two all-star clubs combined for a record-setting offensive explosion. The AL stars rallied in the bottom of the eighth inning to win 11–9, a slugfest in which the teams combined for an All-Star Game record 20 runs, on 31 hits. There were six home runs hit, two of them by hometown star Al Rosen, who went 3-for-4 with five runs batted in. Early on, there was no hint of the fireworks to come. Starters Whitey Ford and Robin Roberts pitched scoreless ball until the third inning. In the bottom of the third, Minnie Miñoso opened with a single and Nellie Fox walked. Roberts struck out Mickey Mantle and Yogi Berra grounded out, but Rosen then belted his first homer to give the AL a 3–0 lead. Ray Boone followed Rosen’s blast with a solo homer of his own to up the lead to 4-0. The NL stormed back, opening the fourth inning with a five-run rally to take the lead. Duke Snider, Ted Kluszewski and Ray Jablonski hit consecutive singles off Sandy Consuegra, and Jackie Robinson lined a double that tied the game at four. Bob Lemon came on to relieve Consuegra, but gave up a two-out, RBI-double by pinch-hitter Don Mueller before retiring Granny Hamner for the third out. In the bottom of the fourth, Chico Carrasquel led off with a single against Johnny Antonelli, moving to third on a one-out single by Miñoso and scoring on a sacrifice fly by Beto Ávila, tying the score at five. The NL scored a pair of runs with two outs in the top of the to pull back in front 7–5. Snider singled and Ted Kluszewski drilled a two-run homer. But in the bottom of the inning, the AL tied it again on Rosen’s second homer, and regained the lead in the sixth, 8–7, with an RBI-single by Avila off Warren Spahn that brought home Williams. The NL kept swinging. Against Bob Keegan in the eighth. Willie Mays singled and Gus Bell blasted a pinch-hit, two-run homer to put the NL back on top 9–8. With two outs, Dean Stone came on in relief, Red Schoendienst on third base. Schoendienst tried to steal home but Stone made the throw to get him out. In the AL half of the eighth, Larry Doby pinch hit for Stone and clubbed a game-tying solo home run against Gene Conley. Next, Mantle and Berra singled and Rosen walked to load the bases. Carl Erskine took over on the mound for Conley and managed to get Mickey Vernon out, but then Fox stepped up and lined a two-out, two run single that gave the AL an 11–9 lead. Top of the ninth, facing Virgil Trucks, Snider led off with a walk and it seemed possible the game could be headed for extra innings. But Musial grounded out, Hodges popped out to second, and Randy Jackson’s foul pop-up was snagged for the third out. Stone was credited with the AL win (without retiring a batter), Trucks earned the save, and Conley was tagged with the loss. team 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 R H E ‘54 NL All-Stars 0 0 0 5 2 0 0 2 0 9 14 0 ‘54 Roy Sievers “A Hero may die, but his memory lives on” ©DiamondsintheDusk.com By BILL HASS I had missed it in the sports section and on the internet. A friend of my mentioned it to me and sent me a link to the story. On April 3 – ironically, right at the start of the 2017 baseball season – Roy Sievers died at age 90. I felt a pang of deep sadness. After all, no matter how old you get, the little kid in you expects your heroes to live for- ever. As the years passed and I didn’t see any kind of obitu- ary on Sievers, I thought perhaps he might actually do that. I knew better, of course. Sometimes reality has a way of intruding on your impossible dreams, and maybe it’s just as well. I have never been much for having heroes. Oh, there are plenty of people I have admired and some of them have done heroic things. But a hero is someone who stays constant, someone you root for no matter what, and people in sports lend themselves to that. Roy Sievers was a genuine hero for me, and, really, the only athlete I ever put in that category. Let me explain why. In the early 1950s, when I first became aware of baseball, my family lived in the northern Virginia suburbs of Wash- ington, D.C. I rooted for the Washington Senators (known to their fans as the “Nats”), to whom the adjective “downtrod- den” was constantly applied, if not invented. Prior to the 1954 season, the Nats obtained Sievers in a trade with the Baltimore Orioles, formerly the St.
