Bill Veeck. The Man Who Conquered Cleveland and Changed Baseball Forever. By Bill Lubinger The morning of Oct. 12, 1948, was chilly and battleship gray. But the city of Cleveland may have never felt so glorious; its residents never so proud. Estimates vary. Some say more than 300,000 fans jammed the sidewalks of Euclid Avenue, from Public Square to University Circle. Others put the number closer to 500,000. They lined the city's main artery, squeezing parts of the two-lane thoroughfare down to one, all to celebrate their championship baseball team. The Indians had finally won a World Series championship - their first since 1920 and, as the cruel baseball Gods would have it more than six decades later, their last. Convertibles carrying the Indians' players and their wives and city leaders paraded the 107 blocks past a cheering throng. "I remember getting off a train and riding in an open car down Euclid Avenue at 8 o'clock in the morning,'' recalls Al Rosen, one of only three players from that team still living. "The town lined up on either side of the street. It was remarkable. The people turned out en masse.'' Teammate Eddie Robinson, now 91 and retired in Fort Worth, Texas, still remembers how the sidewalk crowds were elbow to elbow. Some revelers perched themselves on parked cars and buses. "It was wonderful,'' he says. "It was a wonderful year.'' A year largely orchestrated by a chain-smoking man in the lead car with reddish hair, a wooden leg from a World War II injury and a huge smile that matched his gregarious personality.

LARRY LUCCHINO President/CEO Larry Lucchino was named President/CEO of the Red Sox at the closing of the purchase of the team in February, 2002. Previously President/CEO of the Baltimore Orioles (1988- 93) and the San Diego Padres (1995-01), Lucchino is a veteran of 33 years in Major League Baseball. With the Red Sox, Lucchino manages the franchise on a day-to-day basis with the active involvement of, and in collaboration with, Principal Owner John W. Henry and Chairman Tom Werner. He has won rings with each franchise. The Orioles won the 1983 World Series, the Padres won the 1998 National League Pennant, and the Red Sox won the 2007 World Series, just three years after the 2004 World Championship that put an end to Boston‟s 86-year championship drought. In his 23 full seasons as a President/CEO, his clubs have a winning record of 1,895-1,650 (.535), have reached post-season play eight times (1996, 1998, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009), have won three pennants, and two World Series. In those 23 seasons, attendance has improved over the previous year 16 times and the franchises have set club attendance records 13 times, including an 8 year stretch with the Red Sox, topping 3 million for the first time in Red Sox history in 2008, and again surpassing 3 million in 2009, 2010 and 2011. Lucchino is the first President/CEO to win pennants for two different franchises - let alone in two different leagues - since Hall of Fame executive Larry MacPhail more than 50 years ago with the Brooklyn Dodgers (1941) and the New York Yankees (1947).

They are all Jews who played for the Pirates There is a long standing stereotype that says that Jews can’t play sports, that they have brains, but no brawn. In 1907, Harvard president Charles Elliot said, “Jews are definitely inferior in stature and physical development.” A 1998 New York Times article referred to, “that reputedly rare species – the Jewish athlete.” Well, last week I was watching the Bucs play the Tigers at PNC Park, and there, on the Tigers bench, sat Manager Brad Ausmus, a Jew, and out at second base was an All Star by the name of Ian Kinsler, another Jew. And one of the greatest sluggers of all time, a former Tiger, and later in his career a Pittsburgh Pirate, Hank Greenberg, was also a Jew. Current Jewish players in MLB also include Ryan Braun of the Brewers, Ike Davis of the A’s, Scott Feldman of the Astros, Jason Marquis of the Reds, Craig Breslow of the Red Sox, Jason Kipnis of the Indians, Danny Valencia of the Blue Jays, Sam Fuld of the A’s, Ryan Lavarnway of the Orioles, and Joc Pederson of the Dodgers. So who were the best Jewish players ever? Let’s start with Sandy Koufax, perhaps the best left handed pitcher of all time. How good was Koufax?
