I AM A TRIVIAL PERSON, and I’m okay with that. At the height of the Trivial Pursuit craze,* our family bought several of the boxed games since we were forever arriving at family gatherings having left ours behind. With a bit o’ luck and some excellent partners, I don’t think I’ve ever lost a trivia game, though the Sports & Leisure category remains my Achilles** and the Arts & Literature category my coup de grace.*** The nice thing about being a trivial person is having random facts at your fingertips when someone idly wonders where the phrase “I Am Curious (Yellow)”**** comes from, which actually came up in a conversation last month. The useless thing about being a trivial person is that Google’s speed***** makes us obsolete as well as trivial. I’m not worried. My wireless brain connection still usually manages to get signal even in those places where Google will never get a signal.****** Others of a trivial nature will recall Insite’s original Trivia issue in August 1991, when we relied on landline telephones, locals with long memories, and especially Bryan reference librarian Clara Mounce to put the issue together. Newcomers will note the same Bryan library is now named for Clara Mounce.******* I should point out I would never ask Mounce to join in a game of trivia unless she agreed, in advance, to play on my team. Mounce would not be vexed by this piece of trivia: In what month and year was the date on the cover of Insite magazine accidentally repeated?******** She called in consternation because my error messed up the filing of the periodicals. My apologies again, Ms. Mounce. You really are . – angelique Gammon

The Brazos Valley may be far from Broadway, but it’s home to an abundance of theatrical talent showcased in a variety of local theater companies, and each group offers a different focus and mission. While supporting the local arts community by attending these productions is certainly encouraged, many people don’t realize how easy it is to get involved with a theatre group or how welcoming these groups are to new volunteers. Intimidated? Think you lack drama skills? Fear not, for all skills can be taught by accommodating fellow volunteers who represent a wide range of experience in a myriad of specialties. Participation is extremely flexible; though you may be a director for one production, you could be in charge of concessions or costuming for the next. Leadership roles are typically rotated among volunteers, and all the theater groups express openness to those seeking involvement and gratitude to the businesses or organizations willing to sponsor productions. The litany of ways to get involved is as long and creative as a show tune’s lyrics: acting, directing, stage managing, crew, backstage, set building, light/sound, painting, shopping, donating props, costuming, hair, makeup, concessions, box office, greeting, event planning for special events, waiting tables for dinner theater, marketing, publicity, website maintenance, fundraising and grant writing. A-MAZE-ING OBJECTS It took more than 20 years for Houston postman Jeff McKissack to finish his maze-like Orange Show monument. Made using concrete, brick, steel and anything else he could find, McKissack created a series of walkway mazes, balconies, arenas and exhibits inside an East End lot. When he died in 1980, the future of the project was uncertain, until a non-profit set out to preserve the structure. Together, 21 original donors— including Dominique de Menil and members of ZZ Top—helped pool enough money to restore and reopen the site. The Orange Show is open for tours Saturday and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. and frequently hosts concerts and special events.
