Though much of this mass-marketed, populist fiction cannot be perceived as great literature, nonetheless, some do work to dissolve genres, to re- shape them to different ends. This is especially true of Welsh crime fiction written in English. This thesis posits that there is a wealth of undiscovered Welsh crime fiction written in English and that those neglected works are necessary to the study of both crime fiction and Welsh writing in English. Central to this argument is my assertion that Welsh crime fiction (as it will henceforth be referred as) is a separate genre that contains its own specific tropes and paradigms, markers that are indicative of a certain Welsh cultural identity. As this study also acts as a survey of a previously unexamined area, of necessity, the works under question are the product of a extensive period: from the late-nineteenth century to the present day.

A significant portion of the material relates to Richard Hoggart’s life after his professional retirement, including personal correspondence, his final five published books and his public appearances. However his earlier career is represented by sections including his time in academia and his role as Assistant Director-General of UNESCO. There is a substantial selection of articles either written by or about Hoggart as well as some of his own unpublished or unfinished writing. As well as documents the collection also includes photographs, garments from academic ceremonies, index cards and floppy disks. Born in 1918 into a working-class family in Hunslet, Leeds, and orphaned at an early age, Herbert Richard Hoggart gained a scholarship to Cockburn High School and went on to study English at the University of Leeds where he gained a first-class degree and an M.A. Subsequently drafted into the army during the Second World War he served as an officer in North Africa and Italy, being discharged in 1946. The extensive biographical entry in Who's Who shows that during the active and varied career which followed, devoted to academic and public affairs, he was a Lecturer in the Department of Adult Education at the University of Hull, a Senior Lecturer in English at the University of Leicester, and Professor of English and Director of the Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies, (which he founded) at the University of Birmingham, an Assistant Director-General of UNESCO and finally Warden of Goldsmiths’ College, University of London.

    Letter from England: Journalism, Democracy, and American Popular Sentiment This lecture is dedicated to Joan Didion It is a signal honour to be giving this lecture amidst the enviable grace and unshakable settledness of a noble university. This honour is the greater and my own feelings of diminutiveness and effrontery for my being an Englishman – an Englishman, for sure, visiting old friends and a much-loved place, and in any case preceded and accompanied by innumerable and more distinguished countrymen – the more marked for my being also a guest, and therefore someone who would do well to mind his Ps and Qs, tread watchfully, and keep his criticisms to himself. Behind my absurdly ambitious title, however, is a question vaguer and more flagrant, one which flouts the canon of good manners I have just invoked. That question is partly caught in the titles of a clutch of books which has coincided and thickened the feeling so many of my friends have expressed since the phantoms of hatred were released into the coming emptiness on September 11th, 2001. Those titles include, among many others on the state of the union, Thomas Frank’s What’s the Matter with Kansas?;1 Anatol Lieven’s America Right or Wrong;2 Paul Klugman’s The Great Unravelling.3 In the fifty-odd months since we felt the hideous strength of the atrocity, the conviction has grown that something is going badly wrong in and with America. The beloved republic had saved the world from Fascism between December 1941 and August 1945; had rescued Europe from starvation and bankruptcy in 1947;had been confident and correct in establishing NATO in 1949; and, however much it had bruised the world with its errors in Indo-China or Central and South America or in its own inner cities, it had done more, far more than any old Empire, for liberty and liberalism, for the terrific exhilarations of the good consumer life, for the grand emancipations of information technology, for the promise of happiness held out so long and so unfalteringly by Hollywood.
