Irina Podgorny Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Museo – UNLP 2013 Tomo I Resumen El propósito de esta Tesis Doctoral es el análisis de las condiciones de posibilidad para las prácticas y el trabajo antropológico en la Argentina de fines del siglo XIX y principios del siglo XX. Especialmente, se examina la cultura material, las redes de circulación de información, los espacios de encuentro así como las prácticas de observación y registro, a través del análisis de las producciones del antropólogo alemán Robert Lehmann-Nitsche. Se busca relevar cómo se constituyó el “trabajo de campo” a través de los distintos espacios de encuentro y actores que mediaron/intervinieron entre los objetos de estudio elegido, los distintos espacios involucrados y los sectores científicos. Asimismo se busca dar cuenta de las estrategias para obtener información y colecciones así como los distintos circuitos en los que participaron los objetos o individuos estudiados, tal como ferias o exposiciones. Estas cuestiones permiten vislumbrar diferentes aspectos de cómo trabajaron los científicos pero también hablan de la naturaleza colectiva de la producción de conocimientos y de las interacciones con ámbitos no académicos Agradecimientos Primeramente quiero agradecer a mi Directora, Irina Podgorny, por haberme dado la oportunidad de llevar adelante este proyecto con entera libertad. Como ha señalado Bruno Latour, este tipo de análisis implica desentrañar las redes institucionales que envuelven la práctica científica, a fin de poder historizar y contextualizar un objeto en particular que, estabilizado y estandarizado en tiempo y espacio, cobra existencia como objeto científico1. En este sentido Hans-Jörg Rheinberger ha remarcado la necesidad de preguntarse por “[…] the peculiar historical character of scientific objects, or epistemic things and that of our historical narratives, what it means to speak of scientific objects and what it means to organize our stories around them”2. Title: Karl Jordan: A Life in Systematics Abstract approved: Paul Lawrence Farber Karl Jordan (1861-1959) was an extraordinarily productive entomologist who influenced the development of systematics, entomology, and naturalists' theoretical framework as well as their practice. He has been a figure in existing accounts of the naturalist tradition between 1890 and 1940 that have defended the relative contribution of naturalists to the modem evolutionary synthesis. These accounts, while useful, have primarily examined the natural history of the period in view of how it led to developments in the 193 Os and 40s, removing pre-Synthesis naturalists like Jordan from their research programs, institutional contexts, and disciplinary homes, for the sake of synthesis narratives. This dissertation redresses this picture by examining a naturalist, who, although often cited as important in the synthesis, is more accurately viewed as a man working on the problems of an earlier period. This study examines the specific problems that concerned Jordan, as well as the dynamic institutional, international, theoretical and methodological context of entomology and natural history during his lifetime. It focuses upon how the context in which natural history has been done changed greatly during Jordan's life time, and discusses the role of these changes in both placing naturalists on the defensive among an array of new disciplines and attitudes in science, and providing them with new tools and justifications for doing natural history. One of the primary intents of this study is to demonstrate the many different motives and conditions through which naturalists came to and worked in natural history.

Nyhart* *Program in the History of Science, Medicine, and Technology, University of Wisconsin – Madison, Madison, WI 53706, [email protected] ABSTRACT: How do the discourses of biology and politics interact? This article uses the case of Carl Vogt (1817-1895), a German zoologist, physiologist, and radical political activist in the German revolutions of 1848-49, to examine the traffic across the discourses before, during, and after the revolutions. It argues that the key metaphors of the “state-as-organism” (used largely by political theorists) and the “organism-as-state” (used mainly by biologists) did different work for each group in the 1840s and 1850s. Vogt himself was the rare individual who actively played with both metaphors, in defense of both his radical political views and his materialist biology. I examine especially closely his scholarly biological studies of siphonophores—marine invertebrates that looked like single organisms but were generally agreed to be collections of individuals (“states” or “colonies”), and his use of this creature for political satire after the revolution failed. More broadly, while attention to the organism-as-state peaked in the early1850s, the state-as-organism metaphor gained new possibilities. Whereas earlier it generally referred to an idealist or “ethical” meaning of “organism,” in the 1850s a new, “realistic” interpretation came onto the political scene, bearing a more strictly biological meaning of the term. The article ends with a brief analysis of the asymmetries between the two metaphors and their positions within nineteenth-century German natural science and politics.

The first, the pre-Darwinian period, came prior to publication of the Origin of Species in 1859, and it includes evolutionary theorizing by figures like Lamarck and Chambers. The second period focused on the reception and reaction to Darwin’s work by the public, religious authorities, and natural scientists. This period lasted from 1859 to about 1880 and is best characterized by works that systematically examine the recep- tion of Darwin’s ideas across different countries (Glick, 1974). A Case-Study in the Impact of the Mendelian Research Program Redacted for Privacy Abstract approved: In their modern context questions of heredity have come to be closely aligned with theories of evolution because all such theories require the presence of heritable variation. Thus the need for an understanding of a source of variation and a mechanism for its in- heritance became very apparent with the general acceptance of organic evolution among biologists in the 1870's. Yet no one theory of evolution or of heredity became generally accepted until the modern synthesis of the 1930's. This thesis ad- dresses the question of how this modern synthetic theory gained wide- spread acceptance and seeks to answer it by studying the development of a theory of heredity both before and after the rediscovery of Mendel ca. 1900. Those factors making possible the rediscovery in terms of the developments in heredity and evolution are treated as a background for the reception of Mendel. Theories discussed include those of Charles Darwin, August Weismann, Hugo de Vries and the American neo- Lamarckians. These theories also serve as a background against which to see the life and work of William Ernest Castle. This man was trained during the 1890's, receiving his Ph.D. under E.L. Mark at Harvard. In 1900 he became one of the very first to begin Mendelian experiments on animal material, working with small animals.

Rudolf Leuckart’s 1851 pamphlet Ueber den Polymorphismus der Individuen (On the polymorphism of individuals) stood at the heart of naturalists’ discussions on biological individuals, parts and wholes in mid-nineteenth-century Britain and Europe. Our analysis, which accompanies the first translation of this pamphlet into English, situates Leuckart’s contribution to these discussions in two ways. First, we present it as part of a complex conceptual knot involving not only individuality and the understand- ing of compound organisms, but also the alternation of generations, the division of labor in nature, and the possibility of finding general laws of the organic world. Leuckart’s pamphlet is important as a novel attempt to give order to the strands of this knot. It also solved a set of key biological problems in a way that avoided some of the drawbacks of an earlier teleological tradition. Second, we situate the pamphlet within a longer trajectory of inquiry into part-whole relations in biology from the mid-eighteenth century to the present. We argue that biological individuality, along with the problem-complexes with which it engaged, was as central a problem to naturalists before 1859 as evolution, and that Leuckart’s contributions to it left a long legacy that persisted well into the twentieth century.

    The Dinosaur Connection: A Reinterpretation of T.H. Huxley's Evolutionary View MARIO A. DI GREGORIO Darwin College Cambridge, England The traditional understanding of T. H. Huxley's role in the history of evolutionary ideas has been based on certain prominent biographical, even autobiographical, material: that Huxley was a colleague of Darwin, that he was apparently forthright in his defense and exposition of Darwin's ideas almost immediately after publication of the Origin of Species, that he was - in short - "Darwin's bulldog," ~ reacting to the Or/g/n as an overdue "flash of light. ''2 Michael Bartholomew's 1975 analysis of Huxley 3 argues that there was no real turning point in Huxley's scientific approach after the publication of the Origin of Species, and that even after 1859 Huxley held a basically pre-Darwinian attitude to science. Whether or not one agrees with Bartholomew's view, his article contributed to a change of perspective among scholars working on Huxley's scientific thought. A cursory examination of Huxley's scientific work reveals that he began to deploy the idea of evolution only in 1868, nine years after publication of the Origin, scarcely the response one would expect upon receipt of a blinding inspiration; Huxley's own research, in other words, seems to contradict any claim that the Origin of Species persuaded him of the value of the concept of evolution. Closer scrutiny of Huxley's work, even subsequent to 1868, reveals further that one of the obviously distinctive features of Darwin's theory - the notion of natural selection - fails to appear at all.

Er studierte seit 1842 in Göttingen Medizin und Naturwissenschaften und wurde noch während seiner Studienzeit von Rudolf Wagner mit der Fortsetzung von dessen Vorträgen über allgemeine Naturgeschichte und mit der Vollendung seines Lehrbuchs der Zootomie betraut. Am 13. Dezember 1845 promovierte er mit Zoologisches Institut (1880), Leipzig Auszeichnung, und als Assistent von Rudolf Wagner am physiologischen Institut habilitierte er 1847 als Privatdozent für Zoologie und Physiologie. Für die Habilitationsschrift hatte Leuckart Studien vor allem an der Nordsee durchgeführt. Darin legte er eine neue Systematik der Wirbellosen vor, die ihn schnell bekannt machte.[2] 1850 ging er als außerordentlicher Professor der Zoologie nach Gießen. Im selben Jahr heiratete er in Schönberg (Odenwald) die aus Halle stammende Amélie Henke (1827–1921); das Paar bekam mindestens vier Kinder (Hermine, Rudolf, Eugenie, Elisabeth). Leuckarts wissenschaftliche Arbeiten beziehen sich besonders auf die Erforschung des Lebens, des Baues und Werdens, auf die anatomisch-physiologische Analyse der Tiere, vor allem der niederen Tiere. Zusammen mit Carl Bergmann veröffentlichte er 1852 die Anatomisch-physiologische Uebersicht des Thierreichs. Vergleichende Anatomie und Physiologie, in der die Wirbellosen erstmals neben den Wirbeltieren ausführlich behandelt wurden. 1855 erhielt er mit nur 33 Jahren eine ordentliche Professur in Gießen.

AUGUST HIRSCH (1885, vol. 2, 279) in his Handbook o f Geographical and 1 Historical; Pathology, “a prospect of adding to this de­ partment of pathology.” The department to which he referred was that of “parasitic diseases,” and what was to be added to it, he thought, were “ infectious diseases.” Such diseases, he estimated, may well be of “ a parasitic nature, or that there occur in them organisms of the lowest rank of organic development— the micrococci and bacilli.” Hirsch, like many others at that time, stood on the brink of accepting a generalized parasitic theory of disease. In this article I will examine the history of parasitology in the nineteenth and early twentieth century, and suggest ways in which models drawn from the study of parasitic organisms may have influ­ enced debates over the etiology of infectious diseases. I shall argue that a generalized parasitic theory o f disease only appeared very briefly, if at all, at the end o f the nineteenth century. Both before and after this short period, those who studied parasites seemed to have little to offer those concerned with infectious diseases; parasites made min­ imal contributions to the modern germ theory o f disease. The professional study o f parasitic organisms long predated the era of Pasteur and Koch; it began essentially in Germany at the beginning of the nineteenth century.
