The Genus Microtis R. Br. (Orchidaceae): a Taxonomic Revision with Notes on Biology

Bates 38 Portmamock Street, Fairview Park, South Australia 5126 Abstract A taxonomic revision of Micro lis is presented in which nine species are recognised; M. globula is described as new. M. brownii, M. magnadenia and M. truncata are placed in synonymy with M. rara. M. media is treatéd as a synonym of M. unifolia. The biology, taxonomic affinities and distribution are considered for each species, a key is provided and a detailed description of each species is supplemented with illustrations. Introduction Since Robert Brown (1810) described Microtis there have been numerous taxa added but no complete revision has appeared, nor has any flora dealt with all species. Bentham (1873, p. 269) when discussing the difficulty of determining many Australian orchids, including Microtis, from dried material wrote, "It is to be hoped that the revision of these ... vvill be taken on byresident botanists who have the opportunity of studying them in the fresh state". With this in mind the present author has observed, photographed and collected all species of Microtis in the process of completing this revision. Plants were obtained from as many locations as possible and cultivated in Adelaide and populations of all Australian species studied in the field. Endophytic soil fungi on Microtis were isolated and identified by Dr J. Warcup (Waite Agricultural Research Institute). Chromosome counts were attempted but results were inconclusive. Loans were obtained from numerous herbaria (see acknowledgements). Types of all taxa were examined unless otherwise indicated in the text. -

The paper concerns an assemblage of conodonts from the upper part of the Suoi Bang Formation (Olenekian), North Vietnam. 37 taxa, including 6 new ones: Neospathodus gondolellaefmmtr, N. regularis, Ozakodina gigantea, Pachycladina multispinosa, Neohidneodella uietnamica, Hindeodella langsonensis, have been described dating this part ot the formrrtion at the Smithian. INTRODUCTION This paper is the first report on Triassic conodonts from Vietnam. The conodonts were found in a section exposed near the railway station Bac Thuy (fig. 1) in the province of Lang Son in the northeastern part of Vietnam. The rocks exposed there belong to the Suoi Bang Formation (fig. 2), the lower part of which consists of sandstones, mudstones, and clays, while intercalations of marine carbonate sediments (dolomitic sand- stones and limestones) appear towards the upper part (Vu Khuc 1980). Thirteen samples (about 1 kilogram each sample) have been collected in the section (fig. 3). Only five samples from the highest part of the section yielded conodonts (fig. 3, table I), on average 150-200 specimens per sample. Three hundred sixty specimens were suitablye for determina- tion. Samples with abundant conodonts included also fish scales and teeth, small ammonite shells, and foraminifera. -

The new biostratigraphical sequence comprises the middle Smithian Brayardites compressus beds, Nammalites pilatoides beds, and the Nyalamites angustecostatus beds followed by the late Smithian Wasatchites distractus beds and Glyptophiceras sinuatum beds. This faunal succession correlates very well with that of other Tethyan sequences such as the Salt Range (Pakistan), Spiti (India), Oman and South China. The Smithian faunal sequence from Tulong contains several taxa with broad geographic distribution (e.g., Owenites, Paranannites spathi, Shigetaceras, Wasatchites), thus enabling correlation with faunal successions from areas outside the Tethys (e.g., USA, British Columbia, Arctic Canada, South Primorye, Siberia). Early Smithian ammonoid faunas are almost absent in Tulong because of a preservation bias (absence of carbonate rocks). Five new ammonoid genera (Brayardites, Nammalites, Nyalamites, Shigetaceras, Tulongites) and six new species (Brayardites crassus, Brayardites compressus, Prionites involutus,?Subflemingites compressus, Tulongites xiaoqiaoi, Urdyceras tulongensis) are described. # 2010 Elsevier Masson SAS. TOC Page |i PREFACE: NESL SPECIES ACCOUNTS Welcome to Version 4.20 of the Navajo Nation Endangered Species List Species Accounts which were produced to accompany The Navajo Nation’s February 13, 2020 revision to the Navajo Endangered Species List. The order of Accounts follows the February 2020 revision of the NESL, a copy of which is enclosed for reference. These Accounts were developed and distributed by the Navajo Natural Heritage Program, of the Navajo Nation Department of Fish and Wildlife, to help planners and biologists answer basic questions about species of concern during project planning. Your constructive comments are encouraged. Species Accounts are preliminary tools for project planning. Their target audiences are project planners, and biologists not familiar with: 1) species’ life histories and habitat in this region; and 2) Tribal and Federal protection requirements. Their purpose is to provide clear-cut information so that basic questions can be answered early in the planning process. Therefore, they should be reviewed as soon as potential species for the project area are identified. Accounts will prove useful early in the planning process, but they should be used as a quick-reference anytime. If protected species are found then more research and likely coordination with the Department will be necessary. At the end of each account is a short bibliography for planning the details of surveys, and answering more in-depth questions. For planning surveys and developing avoidance/mitigation measures, Accounts no longer distinguish between required and recommended activities; i.e. the terms ‘suggested survey method’ or ‘recommended avoidance’ are not used in V 4.20. -

Development and Dispersal Process of Ancient Japanese Clan Development and Dispersal Process of Ancient Japanese Clan Masanobu SUZUKI Abstract In ancient Japan, how did the Yamato Kingdom (大和政権) form? In order to research this question, I studied the Ōmiwa clan (大神氏). This clan served the Yamato Kingdom and took charge of religious services in ancient times. The clan was one of the most powerful ancient Japanese clans. Therefore, knowledge of how the imperial family and the Ōmiwa clan are related is indispensable for understanding the nature of the politics of the Yamato Kingdom. Furthermore, it is indispensable for understanding the process of forming the Japanese nation in ancient times. In this paper, I extracted place names, Shinto shrine names, and clan names related to the “Miwa” (神, 三輪) or “Ōmiwa” (大神, 大三輪) from ancient historical documents. I found that they were distributed throughout almost all of the islands in ancient Japan, and some of the clans overlapped geographically. If we now find a related place name or Shinto shrine name, it is likely that related people who the Ōmiwa clan controlled lived there in ancient times. The Yamato Kingdom sent troops to or advanced into western and eastern Japan or foreign countries, so ancient people learned about the Ōmiwa god (大三輪神). They then established shrines for worship- ing that god as a war god, and the Miwa clan (神氏), the Miwahito clan (神人氏), the Miwahitobe clan (神人部 氏), and the Miwabe clan (神部氏) were established in various places in Japan to worship the god according to the local ruling systems of the Yamato Kingdom, including the Hito system (人制), the Bemin system (部民制), and the Kokuzō system (国造制). -

Plate 12 Mollusca of New Caledonia Virginie HEROS, Pierre LOZOUET, Philippe MAESTRATI, Rudo von COSEL, Delphine BRABANT, Philippe BOUCHET Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle, Paris [email protected] The first record of a land mollusc (Placostyllls fibratus (Martyn, 1789» from New Caledonia can unequivocally be traced to the voyage of Cook that discovered the island in 1774. By contrast, the marine molluscs of New Caledonia ironically remained out of reach to European natural history cabinets until well jnto the 19th century. New Caledonia remained untouched by the circum navigating expeditions of the 1830-1840s onboard, e.g., the Astrolabe, the Zilie or the Uranie. Seashells may have been collected in New Caledonia by whalers and other merchants in search of sandalwood or beche-de-mer, and then traded, but by the time they reached European conchologists, all indication of their geographical origin had faded away. It is impossible to tell whether Indo-West Pacific species originally described from localities such as «Mers du Sud» or «Southern Seas» were originally collected in, e.g., Fiji, Tahiti, Australia or New Caledonia. However, even if New Caledonian shells may have arrived on the European market or in cabinets, it must have been in very small amount, as such an emblematic species of the New Caledonia molluscan fauna as Nalltilus maeromphalus was not named until 1859. In fact, it was not until Xavier Montrouzier set foot in New Caledonia that the island was placed on the map of marine conchology. From there on, three major periods can be recognized in the history of New Caledonia marine malacology.
