Ofthe Kurotaki fauna, ten species of bivalves, two species of gastropods, and one sepcies each of amrnonite and brachiopod are discriminated. The Kurotaki limestone is considered, frorn these fossils, to be Mid-Skythian, probably early Owenitan in age. The presence of "Streblochendrki" matsushitai n. sp. and Pticatifera? sp. indicates a survival of the Paleozoic elements in the eraly Triassic. Re- examining other lower Triassic faunas, taxonomic emendation has also been made. Lastly the middle Skythian transgression in Japan has been suggested by reviewing the lower Triassic Systeni in Japan. The late Triassic and early Jurassic succession at Southam Cement Works, Warwickshire Jonathan D. Radley Abstract. Southam Cement Works Quarry, Long Itchington, exposes beds ranging from the Cotham Member of the late Triassic Lilstock Formation up into the Rugby Limestone Member of the early Jurassic Blue Lias Formation. The lithologies and fauna are described and interpreted in the context of Triassic and Jurassic palaeoenvironmental change. The outcrop provides a rich Upper Sinemurian (Lower Jurassic) ammo- nite fauna of the Allgäu Formation. The area is situated in the westernmost part of the Schneeberg Syncline in the north of the Reichraming Nappe (High Bajuvaric Unit). The ammonite fauna consists of seven different genera, each apparently represented by 1–2 species. Echioceratids are the most frequent components (Echioceras, Leptechioceras, Paltechioceras), followed by the phylloceratids (Juraphyllites, Partschiceras) and oxynoticeratids (Gleviceras, Paroxynoticeras). Juraphyllites libertus, Partschiceras striatocostatum, Gleviceras paniceum, Echioceras quenstedti, Echioceras raricostatoides, Paltechioceras boehmi, Leptechioceras meigeni, Leptechioceras macdonnelli and Paltechioceras oosteri are new for the Schneeberg Syn- cline and allow for the first time a detailed biostratigraphy of the Echioceras raricostatum zone. -

The paper concerns an assemblage of conodonts from the upper part of the Suoi Bang Formation (Olenekian), North Vietnam. 37 taxa, including 6 new ones: Neospathodus gondolellaefmmtr, N. regularis, Ozakodina gigantea, Pachycladina multispinosa, Neohidneodella uietnamica, Hindeodella langsonensis, have been described dating this part ot the formrrtion at the Smithian. INTRODUCTION This paper is the first report on Triassic conodonts from Vietnam. The conodonts were found in a section exposed near the railway station Bac Thuy (fig. 1) in the province of Lang Son in the northeastern part of Vietnam. The rocks exposed there belong to the Suoi Bang Formation (fig. 2), the lower part of which consists of sandstones, mudstones, and clays, while intercalations of marine carbonate sediments (dolomitic sand- stones and limestones) appear towards the upper part (Vu Khuc 1980). Thirteen samples (about 1 kilogram each sample) have been collected in the section (fig. 3). Only five samples from the highest part of the section yielded conodonts (fig. 3, table I), on average 150-200 specimens per sample. Three hundred sixty specimens were suitablye for determina- tion. Samples with abundant conodonts included also fish scales and teeth, small ammonite shells, and foraminifera. -

The new biostratigraphical sequence comprises the middle Smithian Brayardites compressus beds, Nammalites pilatoides beds, and the Nyalamites angustecostatus beds followed by the late Smithian Wasatchites distractus beds and Glyptophiceras sinuatum beds. This faunal succession correlates very well with that of other Tethyan sequences such as the Salt Range (Pakistan), Spiti (India), Oman and South China. The Smithian faunal sequence from Tulong contains several taxa with broad geographic distribution (e.g., Owenites, Paranannites spathi, Shigetaceras, Wasatchites), thus enabling correlation with faunal successions from areas outside the Tethys (e.g., USA, British Columbia, Arctic Canada, South Primorye, Siberia). Early Smithian ammonoid faunas are almost absent in Tulong because of a preservation bias (absence of carbonate rocks). Five new ammonoid genera (Brayardites, Nammalites, Nyalamites, Shigetaceras, Tulongites) and six new species (Brayardites crassus, Brayardites compressus, Prionites involutus,?Subflemingites compressus, Tulongites xiaoqiaoi, Urdyceras tulongensis) are described. # 2010 Elsevier Masson SAS. First Record of the Tethyan Ammonite Genus Canavarites HYATT in the Lower Sinemurian of Germany, with Description of a New Species

The specimen was found in a limestone bed in which Vermi- ceras scylla (REYNÈS) is the predominant ammonite species. Thus, the fi nding horizon most likely corresponds to the British Vermiceras scylla biohorizon which lies at the base of the Bucklandi Subzone. A new species, Cana- varites meisteri n. sp., is introduced for the specimen from Swabia. It is the fi rst unequivocal record of this rare genus besides the type localities of the two other Canavarites species near La Spezia in Italy. Dieneroceras fauna, LeioPh]llites fauna and Danubites sp. in the west of Manatuto indicate the early Late Skythian (Owenitan), the Latest Skythian (Prohungaritan), and the Early Anisian age, respectively. LeioPh"llites, TroPigastrites and Procarnites obtained from Pualaca are probably of the Earliest Anisian. These are the first occurrence of the Lower and Middle Triassic ammonites from the eastern part ofthe island with the exception of the occurrence of Dinarites hirschii described by WANNER from the ejecta of a mud volcano. 1. Introduction In 1961 the senior author (K. N.) made a geologic excursion through the. Portuguese Timor Island for about forty days with the assistance of two students of his university, Messrs. Hiroyuki SuzuKi and Toru TAKAHAsHi. Because time was short, and members of the expedition were so few, only a little was done on the stratigraphy and geologic structure of the island, but a number of fossils were collected from various places, many of these being new localities.
