CARCINUS MAENAS: A DEMOGRAPHIC STUDY OF AN INVASIVE SHORE CRAB IN THE NEW ENGLAND ROCKY INTERTIDAL Madeline Cole Department of Biology, Clark University, Worcester, MA 016101 Abstract: Carcinus maenas (Green Crab) is an invasive crab species on the east and west coasts of the United States dating back to 1817. The introduction of another invasive species in 1988, Hemigrapsus sanguineus (Asian Shore Crab), has created competitive interactions between the crabs. A demographic study was conducted to compare crab populations. A total of 155 crabs were collected, 25 of which were C. maenas and 130 H. sanguineus. There are significantly more male Green Crabs (21) than female Green Crabs (4) (p>.0001). There are also significantly more female Asian Shore Crabs (81) than males (49) (p>.0001). Correlations between width and limb loss also exist such that as the width of the Asian Shore Crab carapace increases, the number of autotomized limbs increases (p>.0001). These results lead to important questions and further studies regarding competition between these invasive species. First recorded on the Atlantic coast of the United States in 1817, it has since successfully invaded the east and west coasts. C. maenas is a small shore crab, measuring about 75mm across as an adult. The dorsal side of the carapace ranges from a dark green to brown with yellow patches. The ventral side can be green, yellow, orange, or red. Its most distinguishing feature is the five triangular spines located to the outside of both eyes (Fig. -

Species composition, abundance and distribution patterns of the family Portunidae in the Curuçá estuary in the northeastern portion of the state of Pará (northern Brazil) were studied bimonthly from July 2003 to July 2004. Samples were taken with a wing trawl net during the day at ebb tide during last quarter moon. A total of 427 individuals were collected, comprising three species: Callinectes bocourti, Callinectes danae and Callinectes ornatus. C. danae was the dominant species (56%). C. bocourti demonstrated a preference for the rainy season and C. ornatus preferred the dry season. C. danae was present in both seasons. The results indicate that variation in salinity and pH related to season (dry and rainy) are considered determinant factors for the distribution of C. bocourti and C. ornatus. It is believed to have first arrived in eastern North America around 1817, most likely in the dry ballast of cargo ships. The species has since established itself from Delaware to Nova Scotia and is the most common crab species in many locations throughout this range. An omnivorous scavenger, this crab is one of New England’s dominant benthic predators, feeding on clams, oysters, crabs and mollusks. It is often blamed for the collapse of Maine’s soft shell clam industry. Sua interpretação leva a compreender como as sociedades humanas nomeiam e ordenam os elementos de seu ambiente. O presente estudo teve por objetivo registrar a classificação etnobiológica de crustáceos braquiúros de importância econômica no município de Conde, Litoral Norte da Bahia, Nordeste do Brasil. O trabalho de campo foi realizado no período de setembro de 2007 a dezembro de 2009, mediante o uso de técnicas etnográficas usuais, como entrevistas abertas e semiestruturadas, bem como observações comportamentais. Foram entrevistados, individual ou coletivamente em variados contextos, pescadores artesanais (n = 57), de ambos os gêneros, com idades entre 10 e 78 anos, acerca dos nomes populares e dos principais critérios adotados na identificação etnotaxonômica dos braquiúros de importância econômica na região. Foram visitadas sete comunidades pesqueiras: Siribinha, Sítio do Conde, Poças, Ilha das Ostras, Cobó, Buri e Sempre Viva. Os dados referentes à etnotaxonomia dos crustáceos foram analisados segundo os Princípios de Classificação Etnobiológica de Brent Berlin. Os resultados mostram que braquiúros de importância econômica são classificados na Forma de Vida Marisco. -

To this end they were maintained in net cages positioned in the estuarine waters of the river Elbe. The cages were lifted every hour, and between 8-12 specimens were analyzed for hemolymph concentrations of Na, K, Ca, Mg, and osmolality. The results obtained were compared with the respective data measured in external brackish water. In addition, the specific activity of Na-K-ATPase in a posterior gill was determined. Hemolymph Na and Mg as well as branchial Na-K-ATPase were also determined in crabs collected in the North Sea and the Baltic. The results show that in C. maenas hving in salinities fluctuating with the tides by approx. 15 %o S, Na, K and Ca were hyperregulated, and Mg was effectively hyporegulated. The concentrations of all hemolymph ions and the activity of the Na-K-ATPase were kept r over the whole tidal cycle. In Baltic crabs, Na was effectively hyperregulated and gill Na-K-ATPase was significantly elevated by a factor of ca 2 when compared with North Sea crabs. It is suggested that long-term hyperregula- tion of Na in constant salinities results from an increased number of Na-K-ATPase molecules which may change by synthesis or degradation following sahnity stress.
