Linear Heat Detection in Historical Korean Palaces Protecting several historical Palaces in Korea “Great Southern Gate” Namdaemun Kyung Bok Gung Duk Su Gung Chang Kung Gung The Korean cultural heritage “Great Southern Gate” Namdaemun is currently being equipped with AP Sensing’s Linear Heat Series for fire detection to improve its safety concept. Together with Tyco Korea the new fire detection system is being installed in this building of cultural interest located in the capital city of South Korea Seoul. Before the devastating fire in 2008, the “Great Southern Gate” Namdaemun was the oldest wooden structure in Seoul. After four years of construction the old gate was completed in 1398, rebuilt and renovated several times since. It was used to control access to the city and was one of three main gates of Seoul. During the Korean War from 1950-1953, Namdaemun was damaged extensively and was restored in 1961 to its origin status – including a great ceremony it was given the status of “National Treasure No. 1”. In 2008 in a result of arson, Namdaemun has been damaged extremely and the whole wooden structure has been destroyed. The estimated costs for the 3 year period of restoration are $ 14 million. After a comprehensive study of available fire detection systems the government has decided to use the AP Sensing fiber optic linear heat detection system as key part of the new and enhanced safety solution. Besides the Namdaemun Gate Tyco Korea is also equipping several other historical structures with the innovative new safety concept. Overall monitoring more than 10.000 meters every 10 seconds for quick and reliable fire detection. .

Namdaemun Market, Seoul Namdaemun Market is one of the largest markets in South Korea The Namdaemun Market is located in South Korea's Seoul district. It is one of the largest markets in South Korea that sells an assorted range of products, including men and women's apparel, children's clothes, kitchenware, accessories, and other products. The market is also known as Sungnyemun. Almost all of these shops have their own manufacturing units and thus are able to sell the products at both wholesale and retail prices. As a result, the visitors are able to buy the products at extremely low rates. Visitors from different countries show unique tastes and preferences. For example, while the tourists from the West are inclined to enjoy just the aura of the market, the Chinese are interested in buying clothes and some miscellaneous items, the Japanese are foodies as they like ginseng, gim, and gimchi. Children wear has captured over 90 percent of the market. You would find children's dresses, socks, shoes, and T- shirts. A major part of the market is covered by women's apparel, including suits, casual wear, clothes for elderly, women suits, etc. The Namdo Market along with the subterranean Doggaebi Market sells infant goods, clothing, liquor, canned food, etc. Ginseng sells dried squid, peanuts, pine nuts, dried cod, laver, etc. The Optician's shops sell corrective glasses, sunglasses, and contact lens. Mountain, Ski, and Fishing Gear such as backpacks, mountain boots, etc., are also sold in the market. The market pulsates day and night. Restraining yourself from buying things is difficult here.

  • North Korea-South Korea Relations: Back to Belligerence
Comparative Connections A Quarterly E-Journal on East Asian Bilateral Relations North Korea-South Korea Relations: Back to Belligerence Aidan Foster-Carter Leeds University, UK For almost the whole of the first quarter of 2008, official inter-Korean relations were largely suspended in an uneasy limbo. As of late March, that void was the story. Up to a point this was only to be expected. A new conservative leader in Seoul – albeit a pragmatist, or so he tells us – was bound to arouse suspicion in Pyongyang at first. Also, Lee Myung-bak needed some time to settle into office and find his feet. Still, it was remarkable that this limbo lasted so long. More than three months after Lee’s landslide victory in the ROK presidential elections on Dec. 19, DPRK media – which in the past had no qualms in dubbing Lee’s Grand National Party (GNP) as a bunch of pro- U.S. flunkeys and national traitors – had made no direct comment whatsoever on the man Pyongyang has to deal with in Seoul for the next five years. Almost the sole harbinger of what was to come – a tocsin, in retrospect – was a warning snarl in mid-March against raising North Korean human rights issues. One tried to derive some small comfort from this near-silence; at least the North did not condemn Lee a priori and out of hand. In limbo Yet the hiatus already had consequences. Perhaps predictably, most of the big inter- Korean projects that Lee’s predecessor, the center-left Roh Moo-hyun, had rushed to initiate in his final months in office after his summit last October with the North’s leader, Kim Jong-il, barely got off the ground.

Streets and Open Spaces in Seoul (1995– 2010) : A Cultural and Geographical View of Local Neighborhoods* Valérie GELÉZEAU Introduction The transformation of Seoul’s cityscape and urban morphology since the 1970s has been the topic of a tremendous body of research in various fields of the social sciences interested in the construction of landscape. Based upon the perspective of cultural geography, this chapter proposes a particular focus on what is generally considered as “open space,” grounded on a two-fold entry: first, the analysis is centered on a particular urban object, the street, one of the matrix of urban tissue; second, the analysis is oriented more specifically on the scale of neighborhood communities in residential areas.

  • Historical Palaces Fire Protection in South Korea
Historical Palaces Fire Protection Seoul, South Korea Namdaemun, which is officially known as Sungnyemun (meaning “Gate of Exalted Ceremonies”), is one of the Eight Gates of the Fortress Wall of Seoul, South Korea, which dates back to the 14th century. Following a devastating fire in 2008, it was decided to install AP Sensing’s Linear Heat Detection (LHD) solution to protect this national treasure. Together with our local partner, the fire detection system will also be installed in several other Korean historical structures to protect these valuable assets. Before the fire in 2008, the “Great Southern Gate” Namdaemun was the oldest wooden structure in Seoul. After four years of construction, the old gate was completed in 1398, rebuilt and renovated several times since. It was used to control access to the city and was one of four main gates of Seoul. Namdaemun after the fire in 2008 In 2008, as a result of arson, Namdaemun was badly damaged and virtually the entire wooden part of the structure was destroyed. The estimated costs for the restoration were around $14 million. After a comprehensive study of available fire detection systems, the government decided to use the AP Sensing fiber optic LHD system as a key part of the new and enhanced safety solution. AP Sensing’s LHD solution is uniquely suited to protect valuable infrastructures like the Namdaemun Gate.
