Every day of attendance is worth 5 points. Attendance will be taken via the Arkaive app. This app uses geolocation so that you can check into your class only if you are in the classroom (you must turn on location on your device to sign in). You can download Arkaive app on your smartphone, tablet, or laptop.

Do so by January 14th (5:10pm). Create your account using this link (Links to an external site.) and then input the course code GFTB to gain access to the PPE 3003 check-in portal.

2. Quizzes (250 points) There will be two types of quizzes: 1) Out-of-Class Quizzes on Pearson REVEL that cover the digital textbook and 2) In-Class Quizzes on assigned Personality Reader readings.

a. Out-of-Class Quizzes on Digital Textbook and Lecture (130 points) Starting 1/21, each week, there will be a 10-question, 10-point quiz due at 5PM the day it’s due. This quiz will always cover the Digital Pearson Textbook that was assigned that week.

These quizzes will be accessible via Pearson REVEL. They will be open-note, open-book, and you will have unlimited time to complete each quiz.

b. In-Class Quizzes on Lectures and Non-Textbook Readings (120 points) At 3 different points throughout the semester, you will have 20-item, 40-point quizzes that cover the material in assigned readings from non-textbook readings as well as lectures. These quizzes will take place on 2/4, 3/17, and 4/21. Quizzes will begin around 6:45. Students will have 30 minutes to complete each quiz but may leave when they finish.

These quizzes are via Canvas. They are closed-book, no-collaboration, and will take place during class. If you miss an in-class quiz because of an excused absence, please contact the instructor about how you can make up the quiz. If you miss a lecture because of an unexcused absence, you will not be able to make up this quiz.

3. My Personality Papers (100 points)

CLP3144 Syllabus Page 5

There are three papers due throughout the year. For each of these papers, there are two components. First, you will read a scientific peer-reviewed article that is relevant to the theme. Your paper will need to confirm your understanding of the assigned article. Second, you will offer a personal perspective on how your personality contributes to three crucial aspects of your life (career, relationships, and interests). For all three papers, rubrics will be posted two weeks before the due dates with more specific instructions.

Each paper will be submitted via Canvas. Write around 2-3 pages, double-spaced, times new roman size 12 font.

Each paper will have a class discussion component to it, where you will share aspects of your paper and engage in critical thinking exercises with groups.

a. My Personality and My Career (30 points)

Read the article, “Rethinking the Extroverted Sales Ideal: The Ambivert Advantage” by Adam Grant (available in the “Files” tab in Canvas). Write a brief response indicating Grant’s thesis and supporting ideas. In addition, identify specific qualities of your own personality and discuss how these qualities have influenced your work-life thus far and how they will likely impact your vocational path in the future.

This is due January, 28th at 11:59PM EST.

b. My Personality and My Relationships (35 points)

This is due April, 7th at 11:59PM EST.

4. Personality Inventories (80 points) At four different points throughout the semester, you will have to complete online personality inventories. These inventories are the Meyers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), Personality Assessment System (PAS), Big-5 Personality Inventory (NEO), and the Enneagram.

All “Personality Inventory” assignments are due before class (5:10PM) on the day that they are due. Submit to Canvas a one-page discussion that includes  A brief summary of your results  Does this inventory do a good job of describing you? Why or why not?  A description of the process of taking the inventory (e.g., Did certain question feel strange? Why so?)  What improvements could you make to this inventory to make it more compelling, insightful, or useful?

On the day that these inventories are due, come to class armed with your results, your discussion, and your opinions. We will be using our results throughout discussion.

Some examples might include: code-switching, presentation of personality on social media, or how personality influences selection of contestants on reality TV shows. Presentations can traditional (e.g., power-points), or creative (e.g., brief class activities, videos).

A word (or two) on class environment… If you encounter personal issues you would like to explore further, I highly recommend speaking with a counselor at the UF Counseling & Wellness Center (http://www.counseling.ufl.edu/cwc/, 352-392-1575), or Alachua County Crisis Center (http://www.alachuacounty.us/Depts/CSS/CrisisCenter/Pages/CrisisCenter.aspx), 352-264-6789). Crisis intervention is always available 24/7 from The Alachua County Crisis Center: (352) 264- 6789.

I believe that students learn best when there is a class atmosphere of safety and respect for all. As the Instructor, I will make every effort to create a safe class atmosphere, where debate and discussion can take place and students feel free to express their reactions, viewpoints, and experiences. I will treat each and every student enrolled in the course with respect. I will never demean or belittle a student, nor chastise students for asking questions or raising concerns regarding the course material.

Likewise, I ask that students treat me, the teaching assistants, and one another with respect. You are free to disagree with each other or with the Instructor or the teaching assistants—but you are required to keep your disagreement professional and respectful. As outlined in the UF Student Honor Code and Student Conduct Code, “The University requires civility, respect, and integrity in the curricular program and encourages these in other activities among all members of the student community. Students are taught to exhibit high standards of and concern for others and are encouraged to live up to these standards.”

THE FINE PRINT

Make-up Quizzes Make-up quizzes will only be administered for official University approved absences, which include documented illness, in the immediate family and other documented crises, call to active military duty or jury duty, religious holidays, and official University activities, and proper documentation will be required (https://catalog.ufl.edu/ugrad/current/regulations/info/attendance.aspx#absences). A student health receipt is not sufficient documentation. Without documentation, missed quizzes will receive a score of zero. For unexcused absences, there will be no make-ups. In the event of a medical or personal emergency that forces you to miss a quiz, you will be given an opportunity to make up the missed quiz. If you experience an emergency, you are expected to contact me as soon as possible to schedule a make-up (and provide documentation). In all instances of quizzes taken before or after their scheduled administration, instructors maintain the right to substitute tests different from those administered to the rest of the class at the same level of difficulty as the missed quiz. In all cases, decisions about whether and when to allow a student to make up a quiz or assignment are left to the discretion of the professor. Make-up quizzes must take place within one week of the original quiz unless there are extenuating circumstances. It is your responsibility as the student to work in conjunction with the instructor to determine a time/location of the make-up.

Late Assignments You will receive a 10% grade reduction each day an assignment is late (e.g., 1 minute late to 23 hours and 59 minutes late is 10% off). Once 96 hours have passed since the assignment was due, you will receive a 0. If there is an extenuating circumstance (including sickness, of a close friend or family member, issues, etc.) please contact me immediately so we can figure out an appropriate new due date. Documentation must be provided.

Religious Observances Please compare your calendars to the schedule. Any student having a conflict in the schedule or that missing a class due to religious observance will disadvantage them should contact me as soon as possible so that we can make any necessary arrangements!

Academic Honesty “Cheating is defined in the UF Handbook, and it is the student’s responsibility to be familiar with its many forms (including plagiarism). If a student is caught cheating, the first offense will result in a zero for that exam or

CLP3144 Syllabus Page 11 assignment and a record of the event will be placed in a temporary file with the Office of Student Affairs. The second offense will result in an “E” for the course, and the student will go before the Honor Court. As a result of completing registration at UF, every student has agreed to the following statement: “I understand that UF expects its students to be honest in all their academic work. I agree to adhere to this commitment to academic honesty and understand that my failure to comply with this commitment may result in disciplinary action up to and including expulsion from the University.”

Disability Accommodations “Students with disabilities requesting accommodations should first register with the Disability Resource Center (352-392-8565, www.dso.ufl.edu/drc/) by providing appropriate documentation. Once registered, students will receive an accommodation letter which must be presented to the instructor when requesting accommodation. Students with disabilities should follow this procedure as early as possible in the semester.”

Customer Satisfaction “Students are expected to provide feedback on the quality of instruction in this course by completing online evaluations at https://evaluations.ufl.edu. Evaluations are typically open during the last two or three weeks of the semester, but students will be given specific times when they are open. Summary results of these assessments are available to students at https://evaluations.ufl.edu/results/.”
