Common name Hickory Boxwood; Boxwood, Hickory Stem Milky bark exudate rather meagre and watery, slow to appear. Leaves Fruit, side view and seeds. Copyright W. T. Cooper Petioles produce a small amount of clear or milky exudate. Young shoots and the underside of young leaves clothed in fine, prostrate, dark brown hairs. Leaf blades obovate, about 5-14 x 1.5-5.5 cm. About 6-8 main lateral veins on each side of the midrib Flowers Sepals broadly ovate, about 2.5-3.5 x 2-2.5 mm, ferruginously sericeous outside, but glabrous on the inner surface. Corolla about 2.5-4 mm long. Stamens inserted towards the base of the corolla, filaments about 1 Leaves. Copyright G. Sankowsky mm long, anthers about 0.8 mm long. Staminodes lanceolate or linear, about 1 mm long. Ovary about 1 mm long, ferruginously tomentose, disk 10-lobed, adnate to the ovary. Style about 2-2.5 mm long. Fruit fusiform, ovoid or globose, often oblique, about 15-35 x 10-25 mm. Seeds 1-5 per fruit, seeds fusiform or obliquely ellipsoid, about 15-20 x 6-10 x 6-8 mm. Testa hard and woody, hilum as long as the seed, about 2-3 mm wide. Seedlings Cotyledons ovate or elliptic, about 30-35 mm long. First pair of true leaves obovate, margins entire. At the tenth leaf stage: leaves obovate, apex acute or acuminate, base attenuate, upper surface glabrous or with a Scale bar 10mm. Seed germination time 19 to 41 days. Distribution and Ecology Endemic to NEQ, widespread throughout the area. Altitudinal range from 200-1200 m. Grows in well developed rain forest on a variety of sites. Natural History & Notes Produces a useful general purpose timber. Wood specific gravity 1.02. Cause et al. (1989). 10th leaf stage.
