Today, this network counts 610 sites in 117 countries across the world, stretching from terrestrial to coastal and marine ecosystems, from high mountain peaks to deep ocean abysses. In Sub-Saharan Africa, there are 64 biosphere reserves in 28 countries. This publication provides an overview of the unique role of biosphere reserves for sus- tainable development and nature conservation in the continent. African countries implemented this concept very early as soon as 1976 when the first sites were rec- ognized. -

GEORGIA 2016 HUMAN RIGHTS REPORT Note: Except where otherwise noted, figures and other data do not include the occupied regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The constitution provides for an executive branch that reports to the prime minister, a unicameral parliament, and a separate judiciary. The government is accountable to parliament. The president is the head of state and commander in chief. The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) termed the October parliamentary elections competitive and administered in a manner that respected the rights of candidates and voters, but it stated that the open campaign atmosphere was affected by allegations of unlawful campaigning and incidents of violence. According to the ODIHR, election commissions and courts often did not respect the principle of transparency and the right to effective redress between the first and second rounds, which weakened confidence in the election administration. In the 2013 presidential election, the OSCE/ODIHR concluded the vote “was efficiently administered, transparent and took place in an amicable and constructive environment.” While the election results reflected the will of the people, observers noted several problems, including allegations of political pressure at the local level, inconsistent application of the election code, and limited oversight of alleged campaign finance violations. In Burkina Faso, reports of heavy attacks on civilians by the security forces last week add another layer to the deepening instability in the country. On September 24th, no fewer than 29 individuals were summarily executed by the defense and security forces in two incidents in Petegoli and Inata villages of Soum province (Sahel region). The forces claimed they were militants. On the same day, in Kompienga province (Est region), government forces killed a young person while raiding an Imam’s house in Kabonga village. In a closely linked incident on September 24th, unknown gunmen abducted and later executed the deputy Imam of Kompienga from a village close to Kabonga. A few days after the violence, opposition leaders and civil society activists held a large rally in the capital, Ouagadougou, denouncing President Kabore’s inability to provide security to the Burkinabes and demanding the sacking of Clement Pengwende Sawadogo and Jean-Claude Bouda, respectively Ministers of Security and Defense. In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), the Resistance to the Rule of Law in Burundi (RED-TABARA) and the Front for Democracy in Burundi (FRODEBU) remain major security threats, despite being considered ‘foreign’ groups. The ADF have been particularly active in 2018 in Nord-Kivu, ambushing FARDC and MONUSCO forces on a regular basis primarily in the Oicha and Beni territories, as well as attacking civilians in villages in these areas. -

Founded in 1961, Amnesty International is a global human rights movement that was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1977 for contributing to “securing the ground for freedom, for justice, and thereby also for peace in the world.” Amnesty’s researchers and campaigners work out of the International Secretariat, which over the last decade, has established regional offices around the world, bringing our staff closer to the ground. The South Asia Regional Office was established in 2017 in Colombo, Sri Lanka to lead Amnesty's human rights work on Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Amnesty's South Asia Regional Office has carefully documented the deterioration of the human rights situation in Sri Lanka under the current government. Impunity persists for new and past human rights violations. We ask that during your upcoming visit to Sri Lanka, you call on President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa to reverse some of their recent actions which undermine human rights and take steps to address impunity. Under the current government, the space for dissent and criticism is rapidly shrinking, as demonstrated by a series of cases, including the harassment of New York Times journalist Dharisha Bastians, the arbitrary detention of blogger Ramzy Razeek and lawyer Hejaaz Hizbullah, and the ongoing criminal investigation against writer Shakthika Sathkumara. -

Submission for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) under Human Rights Council resolution A/HRC/43/37 June 2020 This is the second written submission for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) to providing information on the human rights situation in occupied Abkhazia, Georgia, and the occupied Tskhinvali region/South Ossetia, Georgia under the HRC resolution A/HRC/43/37. The submission is provided by the Human Rights Education and Monitoring Center (EMC), a human rights organization, that works to support the creation of a free, equal society based on solidarity. EMC covers existing challenges and works on structural violence and repression in an interdisciplinary manner. Furthermore, EMC’s Equality Policy Program is engaged in assessing and advocacy of human rights challenges in the occupied territories of Georgia, Due to the lack of a political and legal solution to the prolonged conflict in the mentioned two regions, the protection of human rights is challenged and undermined. For decades this situation is deteriorating and unfortunately, the resolution is frequently politicized and is used by the political powers to gain additional leverage over each other. In particular, de facto authorities and the Russian Federation are often using their de facto and effective control over the region to gain further political power via their discriminatory policies towards ethnic Georgians living in these territories. Furthermore, their policies are infringing social, political and civil rights of Abkhazians and Ossetians as self-isolation and restrictive approaches affect their fundamental rights, including freedom of movement, education, right to adequate healthcare, etc. Bearing in mind the limited space of the submission we would like to highlight several problems applicable to the reporting period only. -

It was prepared independently by the Center for Studies, Research and Training on Economic and Social Development (CERFORDES) and authored by Dr. Yaro Yacouba RECOLTE Final Performance Evaluation Report The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food for Progress Project, OGSM: FCC- 686-2013/027-00 or Revenue through Cotton Livelihoods, Trade, and Equity (RECOLTE), aims to increase organic cotton production and trade in agricultural products at the local, regional and international levels. The $12 million project aims to reach 10,000 producers in the eight production areas in 16 provinces of Burkina Faso. It is implemented by CRS in partnership with the National Union of Cotton Producers of Burkina Faso (UNPCB) and Texas A&M - AgriLife Research. RECOLTE also works in collaboration with the Institute for Environmental and Agricultural Research (INERA), as well as with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Handicrafts. The project worked closely with the office of the President of Faso, which led to the organization of the first edition of the International Cotton and Textile Exhibition (SICOT) in Koudougou.
