Moanalua High School School Community Council Meeting Minutes Thursday, April 11, 2019

Called to order by at 5:32 pm by SCC Chair Bryon Nagasako in the office conference room

1. Approval of the March 7, 2019 minutes a. There were no minutes taken as the SCC group moved to the Principal’s Forum in the Library

2. Student’s Report - a. MENE Thanks SA Promotion runs from now to April 24 - students write Thank You messages to teachers/staff b. Senior Prom @ Sheraton Waikiki c. SA Retreat March 24-25 to plan activities and themes for next year; no slogan yet--based on Super Heroes d. Music Department Banquet bids on sale Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday this week i. Saturday, May 18 @ Hilton Waikiki Beach e. April 24 Purple Up Day (Military) f. May 2 May Day in MoHS Gym @ 8:30 a.m.

Ronald Xie (c/o 2020) - Selected to participate in the ACE (Architecture, Construction & Engineering) Mentor Program Summer Camp 2019, a weeklong residential camp at the University of Colorado Denver. Ronald is representing Hawaii and our ACE Program. Working with faculty and students, Ronald will learn about design, digital fabrication, and sustainability. i. Funds to attend the camp are graciously being donated by our ACE Mentors: Lyle Carden (Martin & Chock), Andrea Aegerter (Mason Architects), Andrew Tanton (Cummings Corporation), Kevin Funasaki (Bowers & Kubota), Sunny Johnri (Coffman Engineers), Serena Humay (BASE Engineering), Steve Baldridge (BASE Engineering) ii. Special thanks to Jana Moore & the ELL Department for encouraging Ronald in his STEM endeavors. He exited the ELL program last year.

7. Principal’s Report - Robin Martin a. 2018-2019 Academic Plan submitted to the district office i. Mrs. Martin to meet with CAS tomorrow 4/12 ii. Changes can still be made at this point iii. Progress made starting on p.6 right-hand columns; it’s a three-year plan iv. New additions (input from various role groups) on p.4-5 since the year began v. The new superintendent plans to implement a new format for next year with six categories vs. the original three vi. Still need to address: Grading/Assessment (also part of WASC too) 1. Checking for Understanding p.12 → Descriptive Feedback → Impact on grading/assessment 2. Grades don’t always have to come from tests/summative assignments 3. Focus on thinking/justification for the assessment and not just rely on test scores/numbers - but it’s difficult to get all role groups to agree 4. Explore how to get other role groups involved in the grading/assessment conversation 5. Barbara (teacher): CIA data teams are also part of the discussion; it’s additional opportunities in our departments to have such vital dialog 6. Continuing to refine the process - It’s an on-going conversation

8. Old Business a. Update on SCC Teacher’s nomination for the 2019-2020 SY (Liane Voss) i. One candidate nominated, and we need one more… ii. Voss and Sze (took over for Henrickson) finished their term b. Update on the crosswalk progress on Ala Napunani and Ala Ilima (Principal Martin) i. Signposted saying the crosswalk will be moved May 15, but also says the community can still give input to the DOT ii. Principal Martin announced at Q3 School Assembly iii. Lane blocked off in front of the old portables; the far right (near fire station) will be the new entrance and the middle lane will become the exit - estimated for some time, as early as next week c. Update on the new Auditorium d. Revisit SY 2018-2019 Academic Plan more than two times

9. New Business

a. Graduation: May 24, 2019 i. Project Grad 2020 Chair asked about Graduation date for 2020

b. Summer School Registration i. 1st Semester: June 13th – June 28th ii. 2nd Semester: July 1 – July 17th iii. Still looking to fill a few more teaching positions

First Priority will be given to Moanalua High School (MoHS) students who are in need of remediation or credit recovery to insure graduation on time. Students who have failed, or are in danger of failing, a core class should work with their counselor to submit an application AND payment as priority beginning Monday, March 25, 2019. Applications AND payments for all other students will be accepted in the front office beginning Monday, April 8, 2019. Applications for all classes except for Physical Education (PE) and Health classes will be accepted on a first come, first served basis.

Shelly and Bryon to stay a few minutes in the end to tally Hawaii State Department of Education SCC Principal Survey results; Bryon to type up and send to District Office e. Stay a few minutes at the end of the meeting f. to share perceptions on how well we worked together to accomplish our goals g. Geographic Exception Lottery held on M, 4/8 (Principal Martin) i. On-time requests = 220 ii. Lottery # is just the order applications are considered iii. Each application is still reviewed individually h. SCC Survey of Principal to be completed collaboratively by all SCC members and submitted to CAS Mr. Erickson
