This publication will enrich public understanding about the important contributions to science made at this and other outdoor laboratories. Coram, and other long-range research sites, provide scientific knowledge to assist resource professionals with the development of sound land management principles. This knowledge ensures healthy, sustainable, and productive ecosystems while meeting social and economic needs. Major research at Coram includes the regeneration of young forests and the interaction of flora, fauna, and water to a wide range of forest treatments. Ongoing studies include: • cone and seed development and dispersal • natural and artificial regeneration after harvest cuttings • effects of stand culture treatment on forest development • insect and disease interactions • effects of the amount of wood harvest on site productivity • influence of silvicultural practices on watershed, esthetics, and wildlife values The Coram Experimental Forest is used cooperatively by Federal, university, and private scientists. About 340 ha of the forest are designated as the Coram Research Natural Area where virgin conditions are permanently maintained for research and monitoring. Coram, designated a Biosphere Reserve in 1976, is part of an international network that is devoted to the conservation of nature and scientific research in the service of humans. Continuing research at Coram will help people gain a better understanding of how they can live in harmony with the landscape and assist with the protection of forest and range ecosystems. Shearer is a Research Silviculturist assigned to the Rocky Mountain Research Station’s Ecology and Management of Northern Rocky Mountain Forests Research Work Unit, at the Forestry Sciences Laboratory, Missoula, MT. Since 1959, Shearer’s primary assignment has been the study of natural and artificial regeneration of Larix occidentalis (western larch) and associated species. Shearer managed the Coram Experimental Forest from 1957 to 1996 and served as the contact for United States Man and the Biosphere Program for the Coram Biosphere Reserve from 1976 to 1998. Shearer received B.S. and M.S. degrees in forestry from Utah State University and a Ph.D. degree in forest ecology from The University of Montana. Madelyn M. Kempf was a Public Affairs Specialist with the USDA Forest Service from 1985 to 1995. Kempf now contracts her services for publication design and writing/editing assignments. Kempf also writes for national publications and serves as a writer/ editor for non-profit organizations.     Alpine Larch Pinaceae Pine family Stephen F. Arno Alpine larch (Lurix lyallii), also called subalpine larch and Lyall larch, is a deciduous conifer. Its com- mon name recognizes that this species oRen grows higher up on cool exposures than any other trees, thereby occupying what would otherwise be an al- pine tundra. Both early-day botanical explorers and modern visitors to the high mountains have noted this tree’s remarkable ability to form pure groves above the limits of evergreen conifers. Alpine larch inhabits remote high-mountain terrain and its wood has essentially no commercial value; however this tree is ecologically interesting and esthetically at- tractive. Growing in a very cold, snowy, and often windy environment, alpine larch usually remains small and stunted, but in windsheltered basins it sometimes attains large size-maximum 201 cm (79 in) in d.b.h. and 29 m (95 ft) in height. This species is distinguished from its lower elevation relative western larch (Larix occidentalis) by the woolly hairs that cover its buds and recent twigs, and frequently by its broad, irregular crown. In the Cascades, L. lyallii is found east of the Cascade Divide from the Wenatchee Mountains (47° 25’N) to about 21 km into British Columbia (2). In the Rockies, L. lyallii extends from the Salmon River Mountains of central Idaho (45° 28’ N) northward to latitude 51° 36 in Canada (2). Grows in a very cold, snowy and moist climate, where for more than half the year, temperatures are below freezing and mean annual precipitation is 800 - 1900 mm (2). “Most alpine larch stands annually experience winds reaching hurricane velocity, 117 km/h (73 mi/h) or more” (5). Local occurrence (where, how common) Its uncommon and highly discontinuous distribution shows this species is adapted to a time when cooler, more extensive timberline habitat existed (3).

The Castle Parks, in southwest Alberta, Canada, exhibit extensive habitat fragmentation from recreational and resource use activities. Umbrella and keystone species within The Castle Parks include grizzly bears, wolverines, cougars, and elk which are important animals used for conservation agendas to help protect the matrix of the ecosystem. This study identified and analyzed the nature of habitat fragmentation within The Castle Parks for these species, and has identified geographic areas of habitat fragmentation concern. This was accomplished using remote sensing, ArcGIS, and statistical analyses, to develop models of fragmentation for ecosystem cover type and Digital Elevation Models of slope, which acted as proxies for species habitat suitability.

    Chapter 34 Teakettle Mountain Teakettle Mountain, the southern tip of the Whitefish Range, became a symbol of the Anaconda Aluminum Co.’s fluoride problems by the late 1960s. Looming over Bad Rock Canyon, where a million tourists funneled through every summer on their way from the Flathead Valley to Glacier National Park’s western entrance, the low mountain’s lack of trees contrasted perfectly with green of Columbia Mountain, the northern tip of the Swan Range sitting on the other side of the canyon. Before new air pollution control technology reined in the smelter’s emissions, the haze of white smoke and dust that hung over the plant didn’t quite hide Teakettle Mountain from the passersby, but it did explain things for many locals – “The Company” had killed off the trees just like it had with its copper smelter in Anaconda. Teakettle’s story, however, is a bit more complicated, but what couldn’t be denied by the late 1960s was that the expansion of the aluminum smelter from two potlines and four rooms to five potlines and 10 rooms had tipped the balance – daily fluoride emissions had reached the point where they were killing trees and other vegetation and harming wildlife in National Forest lands and Glacier Park. High mountains bordering western Montana’s valleys tend to shield the lowlands from winds and often trap smoke and fog in weather inversions – when hotter air can’t rise because it is covered with a blanket of colder air. The Flathead Valley, at 3,037 feet, is surrounded on three sides by the Swan, Mission, Flathead, Whitefish and Lewis mountain ranges, which reach 5,000 to 7,000 feet in elevation.

But Before introducing the content of Volume 2 I’d like to take the opportunity to thank all the readers who manifested their appreciation for our first Volume. In terms of both, feedback and copies downloaded, the September Insect Poetic issue is to date our most successful. Volume 2 opens with an interview to Poul Beckmann, the photographer responsible for the fascinating ‘Living Jewels 1&2’, the books picturing beetles in an unusual way, standing with one foot in the future of close-up photography and one in the past of the entomology display cabinet. By now you may have realised that here at Antennae we have a soft spot for entomology cabinets, so we decided to indulge further looking at the singular case of the Marquis Collection brought to surface by Lane Hall who is also responsible for the current front cover.

    HighHig Countryh Country Cl iClimbsmbs The San Juan Mountains surrounding Telluride are among Colorado’s most beautiful and historic peaks. This chapter records some of the Telluride region’s most classic alpine rock routes. Warning: These mountain routes are serious undertakings that should only be attempted by skilled, experienced climbs. Numerous hazards—loose rock, severe lightning storms, hard snow and ice and high altitudes—will most likely be encountered. Come Prepared: An ice axe and crampons are almost always necessary for the approach, climb or descent from these mountains. Afternoon storms are very common in the summertime, dress accordingly. Loose rock is everpre- sent, wearing a helmet should be considered. Rating Mountain Routes: Most routes in this section are rated based on the traditional Sierra Club system. Class 1 Hiking on a trail or easy cross-country Class 2 Easy scrambling using handholds Class 3 More difficult and exposed scrambling, a fall could be serious Class 4 Very exposed scrambling, a rope may be used for belaying or short-roping, a fall would be serious Class 5 Difficult rockclimbing where a rope and protection are used Route Descriptions: The routes recorded here are mostly long scrambles with countless variations possible. Detailed route descriptions are not pro- vided; good routefinding skills are therefore required. Routes described are for early to mid-summer conditions. The Climbing Season: Climbers visit these mountains all year, but the main climbing season runs from June through September. Late spring through early summer is the best time, but mid-summer is the most popular. Less snow and more loose rock can be expected in late summer.
