CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION 02/14/2019 AS A COURTESY TO OTHERS, PLEASE SILENCE CELL PHONES 2 CULTURAL ARTS COMMISION Mission: The Coronado Cultural Arts Commission serves the Coronado community as an umbrella organization and voice for the arts through support, enrichment and development of a thriving arts environment. 2018 Cultural Arts Commission Goals 1. Engage in the strategic planning process to produce a citywide strategic plan for arts and culture. • Develop and implement funding strategies to support the Commission’s work. • Explore the possible establishment of a Coronado Arts Foundation. • Monitor and assess the City’s review of the Community Grant Program. • Use the planning process to create community awareness of the significance of art in our daily lives and the role of the Cultural Arts Commission. • Effectively measure and communicate the economic impact of the arts in the community. • Survey community needs and desires for the arts and the Commission’s role in achieving them. 2. Expand volunteers and staffing for the arts commission as needed to achieve its goals. 3. Continue to expand use of public spaces for public art and venues for art and cultural events. 4. Continue to support the expansion of arts education in Coronado. 5. Celebrate Coronado as an arts community. 6. Foster cross-collaboration among Commission program areas and Arts Partners. 7. Support efforts to make Coronado TV a valuable Community art and culture resource. 3 MINUTES OF A MEETING OF THE CITY OF CORONADO CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION Winn Room 640 Orange Avenue Coronado, California 92118 Thursday, January 3, 2019 REGULAR BUSINESS MEETING – 4:30 P.M. Chairman Jeff Tyler called the regular business meeting to order at 4:30 p.m. Present: Commissioners Sherril Altstadt, Mariah Gillespie, Bill Lowman, Maryellen McMahon, Doug Metz, Jeff Tyler Absent: Commissioner Lei Udell Also Present: CAA Kelly Purvis The Commission said the Pledge of Allegiance. Chair Tyler noted the inclusion of the 2018 CAC Goals in the agenda as a reminder of our work for the year. Commissioner Gillespie moved to approve the minutes of the December 6, 2018 regular meeting. Commissioner Metz seconded the motion. Ayes: Altstadt, Gillespie, Lowman, Metz, and Tyler Nays: Absent: McMahon, Udell Abstain: Commissioner Metz nominated Jeff Tyler to serve as chair. Gillespie seconded. Ayes: Altstadt, Gillespie, Lowman, Metz, and Tyler Nays: Absent: McMahon, Udell Abstain: Commissioner Lowman nominated Doug Metz to serve as vice chair. Commissioner Altstadt seconded the motion Ayes: Altstadt, Gillespie, Lowman, Metz, and Tyler Nays: Absent: McMahon, Udell Abstain: Commissioner Lowman moved to adopt the calendar with one change to our meeting schedule. Instead of meeting on July 4 the Commission will cancel that meeting and hold a special meeting on July 11, at 4:30 p.m. Commissioner Gillespie seconded the motion. Ayes: Altstadt, Gillespie, Lowman, Metz, and Tyler Nays: Absent: McMahon, Udell Abstain: 01/03/2019 1 4 Public Comments: None Commissioner Comments: Chair Tyler commented that this is his final year on the Commission and the CAC will need a new chair in 2020. He encouraged the Commissioners to consider leadership in the future. Commissioner Metz suggested if the Coronado CREATES plan is adopted to consider holding a special workshop to accomplish reorganization. CAA Kelly Purvis reported that the January Community Calendar is included in the agenda as well as available on the Coronado History and CoronadoARTS websites. It is on the CoronadoARTS blog at the beginning of each month. CAA Purvis confirmed that the links are not live. CAA reviewed the City Council and various Commission actions relating to Cultural Arts Commission. All items are listed in the agenda. Commissioner Lowman and Commissioner Metz will continue as members of the ad hoc budget committee. CAA Purvis will obtain the dates for budget deadlines. CAA Purvis indicated that Councilmembers Heinz and Donovan have requested for a meeting with Arts Market consultant Louise Stevens during her next site visit. Councilmembers Sandke and Mayor Bailey declined a meeting and still no response from Councilmember Benzian. Commissioner Metz inquired about the art classes available at the John D. Spreckels Center. CAA Purvis clarified classes and JDSC are sponsored by the Center and are fee based and all classes appear on the CoronadoARTS.com website. Commissioner Lowman and Metz agreed to serve on the 2019/20 CAC ad hoc Budget Committee and as soon as CAA Purvis receives the information and deadlines she will set a budget. Commissioner Lowman stated the budget process is critical to the implementation of Coronado CREATES and with appropriate staffing budget we can accomplish the goals in the plan. Meeting will have to be between February 10 - 20, 2019 due to Commissioners travel schedule. Commissioner Metz and Lowman will not be able to attend the CAC Regular Meeting in February. CAA Purvis requested working team meeting dates from all Commissioners. CAA Purvis presented the December revenue and expenditure report in
