Flowers have antioxidant and hepatoprotective effects, rhizomes constituents showed cytotoxic activity against liver cell carcinoma, while several Nymphaea species have been reported for their hepatoprotective effects. Leaves of N. alba have not been studied before. Therefore, in this study, in-depth characterization of the leaf phytoconstituents as well as its antioxidant and hepatoprotective activities have been performed where N. alba leaf extract was evaluated as a possible therapeutic alternative in hepatic disorders. Methods: The aqueous ethanolic extract (AEE, 70%) was investigated for its polyphenolic content identified by high-resolution electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry (HRESI-MS/MS), while the petroleum ether fraction was saponified, and the lipid profile was analysed using gas liquid chromatography (GLC) analysis and compared with reference standards. The hepatoprotective activity of two doses of the extract (100 and 200 mg/kg; P.O.) for 5 days was evaluated against CCl4-induced hepatotoxicity in male Wistar albino rats, incomparisonwithsilymarin.Liverfunctiontests; aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), gamma glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) and total bilirubin were performed. Oxidative stress parameters; malondialdehyde (MDA), reduced glutathione (GSH), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), total antioxidant capacity (TAC) as well as inflammatory mediator; tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α were detected in the liver homogenate. -

In vitro (egg hatch assay) and in vivo tests were performed with Terminalia catappa a multidrug strain of Haemonchus contortus using Terminalia catappa leaf, fruit pulp, and seed extracts (in vitro), Tannins or pulp and seed powder in lambs experimentally infected with H. contortus. Crude extracts from leaves, fruit Haemonchus contortus pulp and seeds obtained with 70% acetone were lyophilized until used. In vitro, the extracts had LC50 = 2.48 μg/ mL (seeds), LC50 = 4.62 μg/mL (pulp), and LC50 =20μg/mL (leaves). In vitro, seed and pulp extracts had LC50 similar to Thiabendazole (LC50 = 1.31 μg/mL). Condensed tannins were more concentrated in pulp extract (183.92 g of leucocyanidin/kg dry matter) than in either leaf (4.6 g) or seed (35.13 g) extracts. -

To date, neuraminidase (NA) inhibitors have primarily been used to treat infuenza. However, there is a growing need for novel NA inhibitors owing to the emergence of resistant viruses. Geranii Herba (Geranium thunbergii Siebold et Zuccarini), which is edible, has long been used in a variety of disease treatments in Asia. Although recent studies have reported its various pharmacological activities, the efect of Geranii Herba and its components on infuenza viruses has not yet been reported. In this study, Geranii Herba ethanol extract (GHE) and its component geraniin showed high antiviral activity against infuenza A strain as well as infuenza B strain, against which oseltamivir has less efcacy than infuenza A strain, by inhibiting NA activity following viral infection in Madin–Darby canine kidney cells. Thus, GHE and its components may be useful for the development of anti-infuenza drugs. Infuenza is one of the greatest threats to human health, causing numerous deaths and sporadic pandemics world- wide1. Several anti-infuenza drugs and seasonal infuenza vaccines are available and can be generally efective. However, there have been recent situations in which the efcacy of drugs and vaccines may be limited due to drug resistance and the emergence of novel viruses with mutations2–4. -
