    Cecil B. DeMille’s Greatest Authenticity Lapse? By Anton Karl Kozlovic Spring 2003 Issue of KINEMA THE PLAINSMAN (1937): CECIL B. DeMILLE’S GREATEST AUTHENTICITY LAPSE? Cecil B. Demille was a seminal founder of Hollywood whose films were frequently denigrated by critics for lacking historical verisimilitude. For example, Pauline Kael claimed that DeMille had ”falsified history more than anybody else” (Reed 1971: 367). Others argued that he never let ”historical fact stand in the way of a good yarn” (Hogg 1998: 39) and that ”historical authenticity usually took second place to delirious spectacle” (Andrew 1989: 74). Indeed, most ”film historians regard De Mille with disdain” (Bowers 1982: 689)and tended to turn away in embarrassment because ”De Mille had pretensions of being a historian” (Thomas 1975: 266). Even Cecil’s niece Agnes de Mille (1990: 185) diplomatically referred to his approach as ”liberal.” Dates, sequences, geography, and character bent to his needs.” Likewise, James Card (1994: 215) claimed that: ”DeMille was famous for using historical fact only when it suited his purposes. When history didn’t make a good scene, he threw it out.” This DeMillean fact-of-life was also verified by gossip columnist Louella Parsons (1961: 58) who observed that DeMille ”spent thousands of dollars to research his films to give them authenticity. Then he would disregard all the research for the sake of a scene or a shot that appealed to him as better movie-making.” As Charles Hopkins (1980: 357, 360) succinctly put it: ”De Mille did not hesitate

    For immediate release: December 21, 2007 WEXNER CENTER GOES WEST FOR NINE-FILM SERIES IN JANUARY This January, the Wexner Center presents a five-night, nine-film series offering some of the best films from that most American of genres, the western. Though the western has been proclaimed dead or irrelevant numerous times in film history, the recent releases of 3:10 to Yuma, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, and even the Coen brothers’ western update No Country for Old Men suggest that there is still plenty of life and contemporary relevance in the genre (see the New York The Searchers, showing January 10 Image courtesy Warner Bros. Times Magazine cover story “How the Western Was Won” on November 11 for more on this topic). The Western series at the Wexner Center—which kicks off January 10—presents a rare chance to revisit (or see on the big screen for the first time) some influential western classics. It features some of the genre’s iconic stars (including John Wayne, James Stewart, Randolph Scott, and Gary Cooper) in films by some of the genre’s masters (such as John Ford, Howard Hawks, Anthony Mann, and Budd Boetticher). While this series focuses on the postwar western cycle typified by flawed heroes and muddied morals (exemplified by Ford’s landmark The Searchers), it also includes lighter approaches (The Plainsman, Trail of the Vigilantes) and the clearly revisionist Little Big Man. Jackson Lears There was danger in the modern American soundscape; the danger of interruption and disorder. The rhetoric of postwar aural culture was preoccupied with containing sounds and keeping them in their appropriate places. The management and domestication of noise was a critical political and social issue in the quarter century following the Second World War. It was also an aesthetic issue. Although technological noise was celebrated in modern American literature, music and popular culture as a signal of technological sublime and the promise of modern rationality in the US, after 1945 noise that had been exceptional and sublime became mundane. Technological noise was resignified as "pollution" and narrated as the aural detritus of modernity. Modern music reinforced this project through the production of hegemonic fields of representation that legitimized the discursive boundaries of modernity and delegitimized that which lay outside of them. Postwar American modernist composers, reconfigured as technical specialists, developed a hyper-rational idiom of "total control" which sought to discipline aural disorder and police the boundaries between aesthetically- acceptable music and sound and disruptive noise.

Noriega, Chair This dissertation looks to the career of epic cinema pioneer Cecil B. DeMille in order to grasp the role of the research department in the Hollywood studio system. Situated at the intersections of three areas of study—scholarship on the form and social function of popular historical representation; theorizing on the archive as a site of knowledge production; and studies on film authorship that attend to the historical underpinnings of aesthetic choices—the dissertation explores the following questions in particular: What were the industrial standards on which studio researchers based the success and authenticity of their work? And what can we know about the research process as it relates to the production and reception of DeMille’s brand of spectacular cinema? ii I offer this study as an intervention into previous scholarship on research practice in Hollywood, which too often stresses cinema’s divergence from the factual record and draws a rigid binary between academia’s histories and the “unprofessional” ones derived from research departments. This study takes a different approach by examining a wider range of archival materials, including studio library circulation records, scaled prop sketches based on photographs and artifacts, and researcher correspondence with historical consultants and museum curators.

Our collection of paper materials includes continuities, scripts, tie-in-books, scrapbooks, press releases, newsreel summaries, publicity notebooks, press books, lobby cards, theater programs, production notes, and much more. These items have been acquired through copyright deposit, purchased, or gifted to the division. How to Use this Inventory The inventory is organized by box number with each letter representing a specific box type. The majority of the boxes listed include content information. Please note that over the years, the content of the boxes has been described in different ways and are not consistent. The “card” column used to refer to a set of card catalogs that documented our holdings of particular paper materials: press book, posters, continuity, reviews, and other. The majority of this information has been entered into our Merged Audiovisual Information System (MAVIS) database.
