★ PART ONE ★ Former Women Members “I’m No Lady, I’m a Member of Congress” women pioneers on capitol hill, 1917–1934 Great triumphs and historic firsts highlight women’s initial foray into national political office. Four years after Jeannette Rankin was elected to the House of Representatives in 1916, women won the right to vote nationally, with the ratification of the 19th Amendment in 1920. Rebecca Felton of Georgia became the first woman to serve in the U.S. Senate in 1922. That same year, Alice Robertson of Oklahoma became the first woman to preside over the House of Representatives. In 1923, Representative Mae Ella Nolan of California became the first woman to chair a congressional committee. Two other women followed her lead, including Mary Norton of New Jersey, the first woman elected from the East Coast, who would chair four House committees during her quarter-century career. In 1932, Hattie Caraway became the first woman elected to the Senate. Several other women attained prominent committee positions, including Representative Florence Prag Kahn of California, the first woman to serve on the powerful Appropriations Committee. Nevertheless, women were still a distinct minority of the 435 House Members; at their peak during this period, nine served in the 71st Congress (1929–1931). They lacked the power to focus congressional attention on the issues that were important to them. Stockton Shifts in Protestant Worship and Doctrine Pastor Jonathan Stockton 2017 BBTS Fall Lecture Series " Baptists and the Reformation" Protestant philosophy with respect to worship has been in flux for the past seventy years. Because of that, and in order to address shifts, a baseline must be established. A church's and a Christian's philosophy of music and worship should be doctrinal. That is, they should be sifted through the Scriptures just as any other dogma. For instance, the tongues movement, as a pneumatology, is contrasted to Scripture, and cast out. Calvinism, as a soteriology, is thrown against the castle wall of Scripture, and repelled. So there should be a "doctrine" of music! This is not "hymnology," which studies primarily the music used in worship, but a doctrine of music in its general use in the world, with or without lyrics. It might be called "psallology." It should be a Scriptural musicology. Perhaps to say that a philosophy of music and worship should be doctrinal is a misnomer – they seem to be so inherently, so that a church can often be identified by its music, and its music usually identified by its doctrine. Many would contest that statement, but even casual observation overwhelmingly supports it. I. Should Baptist churches be musical? God's churches are musical. A. Prophecy fulfilled shows that they were musical: 1. Romans 15:9-11 explains that Psalm 18:49-50 is a prophecy of the fact that Gentiles would sing the praises of God along with God's chosen people, because of His great mercy. -

Copyright Renewed. All Rights Reserved. Used by Permission. Narrative, Interpretation and the Popular Song The value of narratives in human understanding of the world is widely recognized. The importance of narrative is apparent in varieties of everyday storytelling as well is in written fiction, drama, spectacle and ritual, visual art and film, architecture, legal proceedings, scientific reports and political theory, to provide a only partial list indicative of the range. Yet, the popular song - one of the most pervasive narrative forms that people encounter in their daily lives - has been almost entirely ignored in the vast literature on narrative.1 Whilst narratological methods have often featured in the interpretation of western art music2 and film music3, and although literary approaches to lyrics have sometimes emphasized a poetics of storytelling4, theories of narrative have rarely been foregrounded in the study of popular songs.5 In this article I will focus on narrative to explore practices of interpretation in both scholarship and everyday discussion about popular songs. I will emphasize the intersubjective interpretation of song meanings and advocate an “intercontextual” approach to the understanding of song narratives, drawing from research which emphasizes how our knowledge of the world is cumulative and always in a process of becoming through time. -

SPRING/SUMMER 2017 VOLUME 75 News from the Orchard From the President When we started the renovations of the two facilities, we knew we would be asking the community for a lot of support in a variety of ways. One part of that was on our move in day. The buildings were finally ready and we had lots of furniture and items to get in place. I knew it would be a lot of work, so I asked two groups for help. Word spread and I knew more people would be coming. The morning of move in day, I was out getting things ready with my son, Isaiah. We went to the parking lot a few minutes before I thought people would begin to arrive. The cars started rolling in and kept coming and coming. Isaiah asked, “How many people are coming?” I told him, “I thought 20 or 30”, we lost count at 60. One thing I should add is that close to the day I actually turned groups away and could have had 50 more people there, but I figured that we would have enough help. When I stood to address the group I was a little overwhelmed by seeing the entire parking lot full. We had planned to work the entire morning, but we were done in just a little more than an hour. Please know that we were very humbled and so grateful the amount support we received during the project. Diet is one of those things, and I be- lieve that diet and the lack of the right exercise are the main reasons for the widespead prevalence of obesity, diabetes and heart disease. I have always liked meat the best of all foods, and as a child I never wanted to eat my vegetables, other than the usual starchy things like bread and potatoes. As I grew out of my teens my weight suddenly shot up from 125 pounds to 186 in about six months. I was out on my own and trying to eat on the cheap, which naturally resulted in a rather carbohydrate-rich diet. -

2011 ANNUAL REPORT THE FIELD MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY INTRODUCTORY LETTER New Year’s Day set the pace for The Field Museum. That morning, we began 2011 on the side of an Antarctic mountain excavating dinosaurs. We carried this pioneering spirit throughout the year, as we explored the Earth, inspired young minds, and engaged our visitors in the thrill of scientific discovery. 2011 also brought to a close a series of major projects. First, we launched an all-new website in March following three years of development. We designed the new www.FieldMuseum.org in response to our visitors’ suggestions and loaded it with features that allow us to share our resources as never before. The new website is quickly evolving and we hope that you will check it In just 12 months we: frequently to learn about the latest happenings at the Field. u Undertook more than 60 expeditions, uncovering 200 new plants and animals Second, we opened two new permanent exhibitions focused on u one of the most pressing issues of our time – conservation of the Conserved over 1.1 million acres of rainforest in the Amazon’s headwaters Earth’s resources. Mr. Runnels introduced a chorus of some forty youngsters from the CONSERVATION Sanibel Elementary School under the musical direction of Mrs. Phillips and accompanied by Mr. George Dissette on the guitar. In the group rendition of "I'm Joel Kuperberg, executive Director of the Florida Trustees of the Internal Dreaming of a White Christmas" the solo part was ably performed by Christine Improvement Fund, assured members of the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Stokes. -
