Sounding like an old Alan Lomax field recording of sharecroppers or a chain Gun Street Girl, or one of the hillbilly folk rave-ups Gun Street Girl Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Musicre-released inTom Waits barks out a folktale about a man on the lam after murdering his lover. He accompanies himself on a clanging banjo, Greg Cohen plays upright bass, and percussionist Michael Blair bangs on some iron bars, sounding like old-time railroad workers banging spikes. This being Waits specifically post Gun Street Girl, when he started to free himself from restrictive Gun Street Girl patternsthe lyrics are anything but straightforward; they pass by in a surreal haze Gun Street Girl evocative proper names, word combinations, and highly impressionistic images. From 's Rain Dogs which is considered the second in a trilogy of records that began with Swordfishtrombones in and finished with Frank's Wild Years in"Gun Street Girl" continues Waits' move away from the more traditional leanings of his s records. Those albums were steeped in rootsy blues, jazz, folk, and Tin Pan Alley pop. But Waits had seemed to paint himself into a corner with a persona and style that was edging toward self-parody. He almost completely reinvented himself in the s with strides toward a much wider range Gun Street Girl more adventurous musical styles, including Captain Beefheart-inspired deconstructed blues and Weimar era cabaret songwriting. It Gun Street Girl really unlike anything the songwriter had recorded prior to Swordfishtrombones. And while his lyrics were always one of his strong points, Waits abandoned many of the nostalgic, hipster, boozy poet themes that he had done so well but had started to become tired. Instead, he seemed Gun Street Girl choose to follow a more stream-of-consciousness approach that got more at the heart of Americana, rather than merely evoking scenes from noir films. His songs seemed more present and vital, though still timeless. While he embraced new elements, Waits was also wise to retain the aspects of his songwriting as well as his personality that set him apart; instead of tearing Gun Street Girl his past completely, he grew Gun Street Girl it.

  • Los Angeles Times “Back from the Brink” [Steve Hochman] (1999)
Back From the Brink : With 'Spider,' Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse returns from a life- threatening episode. Pop Music March 21, 1999|STEVE HOCHMAN | Steve Hochman writes regularly for Calendar Mark Linkous would never write a song with a subject as trite as getting back on his own two feet. That particular struggle is all too real for him. The release of "Good Morning Spider," the second album he's made under the band name Sparklehorse, and a tour that brings him to the Troubadour on Friday are just the latest steps in rebuilding his life and career after a nightmare. Two years ago, the Virginia-based musician was basking in the acclaim for "vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot," the first Sparklehorse album. It was being hailed in particular in Britain, where the press fell for the haunting mix of low-fi rural rock, dream-time pop and inward-looking imagery. Among his fans: the band Radiohead, which offered him the opening slot on most of its European shows in 1996 and 1997. In January 1997, though, everything came crashing down in a London hotel bathroom. "I had a big bottle of Valium from Mexico and had been on antidepressants for a long time," says Linkous, 34, with flat detachment--as if he doesn't remember the incident but has heard others describe it. "And I guess I'd been taking the Valium so much that I passed out. My legs were underneath me all night and half a day. When the paramedics came and straightened my legs out, it sent all the toxins to my heart and gave me a heart attack.

• Swordfishtrombones Revisited
Swordfishtrombones Revisited Start time: 8pm Approximate running time one hour 30 minutes, no interval Please note all timings are approximate and subject to change David Sheppard talks to David Coulter about discovering a spirit of adventure through Swordfishtrombones. At the dawn of the 1980s, Tom Waits was in danger of sliding into terminal self-parody. While his songs were covered by everyone form The Eagles to Bruce Springsteen, Waits, who had just turned 30, seemed stuck in an artistic rut, his albums delivering a cocktail of retro styles: afterhours burlesques, Beat poet reveries, jazzy stomps and string-laden ballads, all of them rendered in the grizzled cartoon baritone of a heavy-smoking soak at least twice his age. Despite 1980’s Heart Attack & Vine, the sixth and last of his albums for Elektra/Asylum, winning critical plaudits, Waits was growing jaded, holed up in West Hollywood’s sybaritic Tropicana Hotel, still peopling his songs with lonely, hard-boiled characters apparently on loan from desolate Edward Hopper paintings or the novels of Dashiell Hammett. While elsewhere punk’s youthful new broom was gleefully sweeping away the old, Waits remained a goateed, trilby-hatted anachronism, a wilful throwback to a sentimentalised, pre-rock’n’roll America. ‘I used to think I was making movies for the ears… I was overly maudlin and romantic’, he later admitted. Happily, artistic deliverance would soon arrive courtesy of another kind of ‘movie for the ears’ – namely a commission from Francis Ford Coppola to write a ‘lounge operetta’ score for the director’s ambitious cine-musical, One From the Heart.

Contact: William Murray 718-636-4129 1111iHIWil THE BLACJ( RIDER A PACT WITH THE DEVIL THREE VISIONARIES COLLABORATE IN AMERICAN PREMIERE AT BAM ROBERT WILSON, TOM WAITS, WILLIAM S. BURROUGHS NOVEMBER 20 - DECEMBER 1, 1993 The Black Rider, a haunting , cabaret-infused , operatic melodrama created by director Robert Wilson , musician Tom Waits , and author William S. Burroughs , each a major figure in his field, has its American premiere as part of the Brooklyn Academy of Music's (BAM) 11th NEXT WA VE Festival, sponsored by Philip Morris Companies Inc . The production runs from November 20 through December 1 at the BAM Opera House which is located at 30 Lafayette Avenue , Brookl yn, N .Y. The Black Rider's plot is adapted from a collection of folk tales which inspired Carl Maria von Weber's 1821 opera Der Frieschutz . It is the story of a young marksman , Wilhelm, who falls prey to the devil in attempting to win the hand of his beloved Kathchen . David Reiff, in his review of the work's premiere in Hamburg called it "a grand act of cultural appropriation ." In the hands of Wilson, Waits and Burroughs , each in top form , it becomes a cabaret/psychodrama with a decidedly contemporary slant. Unlike Weber 's opera, in this version the devil - namely "The Black Rider" -- remains triumphant. The Black Rider premiered to enthusiastic crowds at the Thalia Theater Hamburg in March 1990, and has gone on to acclaimed performances in Paris , Vienna , Barcelona , and Sao Paulo . The Black Rider score , as interpreted by Tom Waits, was released in early November on Island Records .
