It was first presented by the Los Angeles Theater Center, February 1989. Tom Waits portrayed the character called "Curly". TW: Actor, Curly Tom Waits (1999): "I'm very undisciplined. The schedule is the hardest thing for me. I'm not used to getting up, working [in re- hearsals] for eight hours and then back home to go over the text and prepare the next days work. I have my own way of working on my own stuff. This schedule requires a discipline that's unknown to guy's like me." Then as if stringing together straight statements was too much to ask, he added, "It [the discipline] is a bone I do not have in my ribcage." Late Night Jazz: Schon 70!? • Wil the BLACJ( RIDER
Contact: William Murray 718-636-4129 1111iHIWil THE BLACJ( RIDER A PACT WITH THE DEVIL THREE VISIONARIES COLLABORATE IN AMERICAN PREMIERE AT BAM ROBERT WILSON, TOM WAITS, WILLIAM S. BURROUGHS NOVEMBER 20 - DECEMBER 1, 1993 The Black Rider, a haunting , cabaret-infused , operatic melodrama created by director Robert Wilson , musician Tom Waits , and author William S. Burroughs , each a major figure in his field, has its American premiere as part of the Brooklyn Academy of Music's (BAM) 11th NEXT WA VE Festival, sponsored by Philip Morris Companies Inc . The production runs from November 20 through December 1 at the BAM Opera House which is located at 30 Lafayette Avenue , Brookl yn, N .Y. The Black Rider's plot is adapted from a collection of folk tales which inspired Carl Maria von Weber's 1821 opera Der Frieschutz . It is the story of a young marksman , Wilhelm, who falls prey to the devil in attempting to win the hand of his beloved Kathchen . David Reiff, in his review of the work's premiere in Hamburg called it "a grand act of cultural appropriation ." In the hands of Wilson, Waits and Burroughs , each in top form , it becomes a cabaret/psychodrama with a decidedly contemporary slant. Unlike Weber 's opera, in this version the devil - namely "The Black Rider" -- remains triumphant. The Black Rider premiered to enthusiastic crowds at the Thalia Theater Hamburg in March 1990, and has gone on to acclaimed performances in Paris , Vienna , Barcelona , and Sao Paulo . The Black Rider score , as interpreted by Tom Waits, was released in early November on Island Records .

  • Shotgun Players Presents the Black Rider: the Casting of the Magic Bullets, Directed by Mark Jackson, Musical Direction by David
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Media Contact: OCTOBER 2017 Shokai Sinclair Marketing and communications director [email protected] or 510.692.2354 (cell) Shotgun Players presents The Black Rider: The Casting of the Magic Bullets, directed by Mark Jackson, musical direction by David Möschler, original direction by Robert Wilson, music and lyrics by Tom Waits, text by William S. Burroughs, original musical arrangements by Greg Cohen and Tom Waits, dramaturgy by Wolfgang Wiens Bay Area musician Josh Pollock works well with what’s at hand in The Black Rider by Tom Waits. Berkeley, CA – Mention The Black Rider and many people immediately think of Tom Waits; now Bay Area Waits fans will also think of Bay Area musicians you may have heard of—like Josh Pollock and David Möschler. The Black Rider is a landmark of popular experimental theater, yanking the musical theatre genre into a carnival nightmare. The story: Wilhelm, a lowly clerk, and Käthchen, the daughter of a well to do forester, wish to get married. But Wilhelm must first prove to Käthchen's father that he has the brawny skills of a huntsman. What to do? Along comes Pegleg with an offer he cannot refuse. With music by Tom Waits this adaptation by William S. Burroughs will be a wild ride through a dark and magical forest. Director Mark Jackson comments: “The Black Rider is a fairytale for adults about how fear and self-doubt can lead us to sell out our integrity for a shortcut to our hopes and dreams." The Black Rider begins previews on Thursday, November 9; opens on Friday, November 17; and runs through Sunday, December 31, 2017, at The Ashby Stage.
