Chapitre III ARABESQUES Les civilisations arabes Que de cités nous avons fait périr parce qu’injustes, 1 sont aujourd’hui désertes bien que debout! Là elle témoigne non de la détestation de la culture, mais de l'humanité en entier. 1 1 Présentation Si l’on admet que la civilisation est l’ensemble de ce qui caractérise et unifie une société humaine3 , celle des Arabes paraît tout à fait manifeste et caratéristique : le milieu naturel, la langue et les structures sociales en sont les bases. Elle ne ressemble donc à aucune autre et mérite d’être connue et reconnue. Elle n’est pas absolument unitaire non plus. Une forte opposition existe entre Arabes du nord et du sud; les Qays/ Kalb contre les Mudar/Qathan. C’est une mythologie mais ce n'est pas qu'une mythologie. Une construction séparée de l'arabité s’est opérée, et elle a aussi subi, comme toute culture humaine, des influences extérieures qui l’ont modifiée. Ailleurs, l’isolement a composé des formes originales. Que l’on songe aux Nabatéens influencés par la civilisation gréco-romaine, dans ses formes, alors que l’Arabie du sud se constituait en ensemble unifié et isolé. En revanche, la conscience de former un groupe a été lente à venir.
