Schedule of Classes & Events Fall 2012 Health Education Classes & Events Winter – Spring 2016 Healthy Families – Healthcare Alliance Childbirth and Parenting Baby Basics w/Infant CPR and Child Passenger Safety – MedStar Washington Hospital Center Parents will learn how to care for their precious newborn by our registered nurse educator. Infant CPR is always taught by instructors that are certified by the American Heart Association. Child Passenger Safety is must. Statistics show that most babies are placed in car seats that have not been properly installed. A certified trainer will review the important points every parent should know about how to keep their infant safe. A certified massage therapist will demonstrate modalities to increase relaxation during labor and beyond. The therapist teaches each support person massage techniques that they can use to help mom cope with labor. MedStar Family Choice in conjunction with the American Lung Association Freedom from Smoking Smoking Cessation Classes This class is designed to help smokers develop a plan of action leading up to quit day and provide the support they need to remain smoke-free. Using a scientific behavior-based methodology, the Freedom from Smoking program is based on the latest addiction and behavior change models, and the program addresses the difficulties of quitting. Eight sessions are delivered in a small group setting over a 7-week period to give participants personalized attention and the support of their peers. This program is intended and based on research for a group setting, NOT for individual counseling, and has not been proven effective for short, individual interventions. Those who attend the training should intend to use the program for small groups. Lectures, group discussion and skills practice focusing on a variety of evidence- based cessation practices meet the needs of different learning styles.     MedStar Health is working diligently to care for the patients and communities we serve who may need us during this challenging time of the COVID‐19 pandemic. Our leaders, caregivers and non‐clinical personnel are focused on ensuring the safety and well‐being of our communities. We have workflows and procedures in place that address triage, screening, testing and treatment, and we are planning for an exponential increase in demand for our services in the event that becomes necessary. We are addressing the needs of our communities through various channels. We have launched chat bots to address COVID‐related questions individuals may have. This appears to have a positive outcome in reducing the number of unnecessary provider visits during a time of needed social‐distancing. MedStar has greatly increased our capability to provide E‐visits, with over 200 providers available to provide visits upon demand. E‐visit is a critical path for screening patients for COVID‐19 testing needs. MedStar continues to follow the CDC/regulatory screening criteria to identify which patients are appropriate for COVID‐19 testing.     COVID UPDATE: aacounty.org/coronavirus A weekly update from County Executive Steuart Pittman March 13, 2021 COUNTY EXECUTIVE’S MESSAGE We marked the one year anniversary of our first confirmed case of COVID-19 this week. 552 deaths, 36,770 positive cases, and 123,838 unemployment claims later, recovery is on the horizon. Please take the time to read Responding to COVID-19, a four-page report on the programs and services that county government has delivered to protect our people, and please join me in thanking the public servants behind each of these initiatives. I am thrilled to report that enough of our phase 1B residents have been vaccinated that our Department of Health will be scheduling appointments next week for seniors in the 65 to 74 age category. It is also good to see that the state has fixed the flaw in software that allowed people to share appointment links, forcing our staff to turn away ineligible people at clinics. This fix has made it possible for the county to improve its registration process and accept more eligible people. The Governor’s decision this week to remove the 50% capacity limits at retail and restaurants was a surprise and maybe a few weeks early, but we don’t expect it to have much impact on case rates or business, so we allowed it to take effect. Distancing restrictions and market conditions keep most establishments well under 50%. Maybe the best news this week is coming from Washington. Drug companies are cooperating to boost vaccine production and childhood poverty could be cut by half as a result of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
