Pl a nner Michiana’s bi-monthly Guide to WNIT Public Television Issue No. 2 March — April 2014

Good things come in threes. The third of experience michiana kicks off this month. Board of Directors Chair Ida Reynolds Watson Vice Chair Rodney F. Ganey, Ph.D. A Message from Greg Giczi Kevin Morrison President and GM, WNIT Public Television Susan Ohmer, Ph.D. President and General Manager Greg Giczi Treasurer Is it safe to say that spring is around ? Thomas E. Slager I’ve had enough snow and cold this winter. I’m ready for some warmer weather! Secretary Cari Shein There was some positive value to WNIT when the weather was so bad … everyone stayed at home and Directors was watching television. We received all sorts of indications that viewership was up. Thomas G. Coley, Ph.D. Season 4 set viewership records on its premiere night. We all know that the Super Bowl was the most Marvin Curtis watched program that night, but can you guess what the second most watched program happened to Katy Demarais be? It was Downton Abbey. You WNIT viewers are classy people and it is catching on! Robert G. Douglass Irene E. Eskridge 2014 marks WNIT’s 40th year. The amount of technology changes during that period is boggling, David M. Findlay and it will be hard to predict what may happen in our next 40 years, so I’m just focusing on how we William A. Gitlin will need to prepare for the next five or so to the year 2020. In that period, we know that we will see Tracy D. Graham another picture quality upgrade to a technology called UHD (Ultra High Definition), or sometimes Albert L. Gutierrez called 4K, because there are about 4,000 horizontal picture lines on the screen. James Hillman Katherine Humphreys While technology remains a big part of how we deliver programming to you, the most important part Glenn E. Killoren remains the quality of the programming content. WNIT and PBS leave no question that we Paul A. Marsh set the benchmark. Your new Planner is loaded with examples. Ryan Matthys Christine M. Maziar We have another anniversary to celebrate. March 19th is the start of the 3rd season for Experience Mary Louise Miller Michiana with host Gordy Young. We love doing this program because it is a way to highlight so many Pat Moody of the good events, from the performing arts to fun runs, that happen in our local communities. On Jill Richardson top of that, Gordy can still be a wacky guy, and he packs the program with vitality and good humor. Maritza Robles Joyce F. Stifel March is also the month of our Spring Membership Drive. You will see that we have lots of special James M. Summers programming which we use to attract new supporters of the station or have our current good Thomas Topash Michael Wargo renew or even add-to their support. Of special note is the evening of March 12th when we will feature Patrick Welch a program about the history of Indiana University basketball, Hoosier Rising. Charter Directors I hope you have seen our announcements and call for entries for our 2nd year of Michiana’s Rising Arthur J. Decio Star. Please enter yourself or pass the word to talented people you know. Entries are due by March Jerry Hammes 28th to Michiana’s biggest talent contest, with the finals televised live in August. Ernestine M. Raclin Jane Warner Thanks for being our viewer, and special thanks for making sure public television remains a big part of Dar Wiekamp* Michiana with your contribution and support.

March 2014 Spring Membership Campaign WNIT’s Spring Membership Campaign begins Saturday, March 1 and runs through Sunday, March 16. Our on-air Membership Campaigns remain the most effective way of encouraging viewers to join the WNIT family of supporters. While these drives represent less than two percent of our annual broadcast hours, they do provide WNIT with the majority of revenue required to purchase and produce the regular and local programming enjoyed by everyone throughout northern Indiana and southwestern Michigan.

So get ready to experience an interesting and informative line-up of special programs for the entire family. And be sure to tell your family and friends why you think supporting WNIT is important. WNIT is pleased to shine the Supporter Spotlight on the Honorable James W. Rieckhoff, an Elkhart judge who recently retired after 30 years of service. Jim has always supported the fine programs on WNIT, especially the operas, and has been a member of the Directors’ Circle since its inception during the 1990s. Jim served three terms on the WNIT Board, appeared on air for the Annual Auction and was pleased to help promote WNIT by appearing in taped messages supporting the station. He remembers serving as the WNIT Board liaison to the Community Advisory Council. As Jim said at that time, “WNIT has been, and must continue to be, the main local source of informative, enriching, and thought-provoking programs offering to all viewers valuable perspectives on our community, our culture, and our world. If its light should grow dimmer, we will be all the poorer for that.”

Directors’ Circle

The WNIT Directors’ Circle represents a very dedicated and select group of individuals who, by their commitment, contribute to the total annual support which is the foundation of WNIT’s operating budget. These essential annual contributions make possible the great programs that everyone in Michiana enjoys. Diamond Level ($10,000 +) Tom and Susan Fischbach Mr. and Mrs. William Irene Eskridge V.
