The province covers an area of 6,596 sq. kms. and is above all noted as the centre of the legendary Kingdom of Sukhothai, with major historical remains at Sukhothai and Si Satchanalai. Its main natural attraction is Ramkhamhaeng National Park, which is also known as ‘Khao Luang’. The aim of this review is to integrate numerous petrological studies with sedimentary, palaeontological, and provenance studies in order to construct a preliminary tectonic model which shows the terranes docked in the earliest Carboniferous (Truong Son with Loei-Phetchabun) and in the Permian (Kontum). The Kontum Terrane is characterized by Proterozoic magmatism, mid-Ordovician to Early Devonian granites, and Permian charnockites. Major carbonate platforms developed in the Givetian to earliest Tournaisian on Truong Son and from the Visean to mid-Permian across Truong Edited by: Son and Loei-Phetchabun terranes. For the first time, we report on the widespread establishment of the globally invasive freshwater snail Physa acuta (Physidae) in Thailand and Laos, including decades old records that had previously been misidentified as Camptoceras jiraponi (Planorbidae). Occurrence of Physa acuta as hitchhikers among ornamental aquatic plants suggests that the ornamental trade was a likely introduction pathway of the species into Thailand. That a globally invasive species was able to spread unnoticed for such a long period of time highlights the need for countries like Thailand to focus research efforts on prevention and early detection of introduced species, in addition to increasing our understanding of native biodiversity. -

Telephone: (662) 579-8599; Facsimile: (662) 940-6371; e-mail: [email protected] Abstract Pantoea stewartii subsp. stewartii causes Stewart’s bacterial wilt and leaf blight of sweet corn and maize, a bacterial disease that is responsible for serious crop losses. The disease is spread by the corn flea beetle Chaetocnema pulicularia, but can be seed transmitted at a very low frequency . However, the potential risk of seed transmission is considered so important in international shipment of corn seed that more than 50 countries ban its import unless it is certified to be free of P. stewartii subsp. stewartii. Thailand is the important corn seed production in Southeast Asia. Every year Thailand import corn seed to use in seed production industry, it makes a high risk of bacterial disease enter through the farming systems in the country. Therefore, it is necessary to survey, monitoring and surveillance to the scientific information in preparing the list of pests, pest risk analysis and the pest- free area. From -

This province has many natural attractions with interesting cultures and traditions as a popular tourism destination. The geological signification of this area is in the collision zone between Shan-Thai plate and Indochina plate. Resulting in many outstanding geological diversities. This research focuses on geological features or ge osites as natural tourist attractions. Sixteen geosites were selected in Phetchabun Province consisting of waterfalls, potholes, cliffs, caves, columnar jointing, fossils localities, and many scenic viewpoints arising from tectonic plate evolution, weathering and erosion. Guidelines for geotourism development were analyzed. This is the first geotourism research study in this area, and presents geological data, recommended travel routes, an overview of the current situation and possible problems of promoting geosites as tourist attractions. -

Sci.) 45 : 841 - 855 (2011) Checklist of New Records of Subfamily Lamiinae (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) in Northern Thailand Suksawat Ponpinij*, Praparat Hormchan and Valuli Rojanavongse ABSTRACT Collections were made of longhorn beetles, subfamily Lamiinae (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), during 2004–2008 from specimens caught on flowers, trees and light traps from northern Thailand for taxonomic studies. Specimens were compared with samples from the Department of Agriculture, Royal Forest Department, Kasetsart University, the private collection of Bro. Amnauy Pinratana and by expert identification.
