Entering the 2019-20 season, San Diego State will have to replace 100 of those starting assignments (34 each from McDaniels and Watson, 32 from Hemsley and one from Michael Sohikish). • The Aztecs were once again one of the top defensive team in the Mountain West last season, ranking second in both field-goal percentage defense (.410) and three-point field goal percentage defense (.324). PLAYER PERSONNEL • San Diego State returns two starters in junior forward Matt Mitchell and sophomore forward Nathan Mensah from the 2018-19 squad. The duo figures to be inserted into the first five from the outset of the 2019-20 season. Mitchell started in 33 games last season, and 65-of-67 in his career, while Mensah finished 2018-19 with 20 straight starts. Both saw action in all 34 games last season.

• Matt Mitchell had a strong sophomore season that saw him average 10.3 points (.405 FG, .328 3FG), 4.1 rebounds and 1.8 assists, while holding top-three team rankings in 11 statistical categories. Built like a two-sport star, standing at 6-6 and 240 pounds, Mitchell has scored in double figures 37 times in his career. He has averaged 10.4 points per game in his two seasons as an Aztec and if he continues at that scoring pace in 2019-20, would become the 34th player in program history to reach the 1,000-career point plateau.

• Nathan Mensah returns after a solid freshman campaign. Initially coming off the bench, the Labadi, Accra, Ghana native started the final 20 games and averaged 6.1 points, 5.9 rebounds and 1.1 blocks during that span. He is just the second SDSU freshman to have a 10-point, 10-, three- and two- game in the last 23 years (the other to accomplish the feat was Kawhi Leonard in 2009-10). Mensah led the team in field goal percent- age (.541), offensive rebounds (80) and blocks (39). His 187 total rebounds and 39 blocks ranked second among Mountain West freshman. He is not related to teammate Joel Mensah.

• After a sound freshman season, Jordan Schakel returned in 2018-19 and improved in every statistical category. The sharpshooter made 41.5 percent of his three-point attempts (44-of-106) as he cemented himself as the team’s top shooting guard coming back in 2019-20. He made at least one three-pointer in 21 games, and four in a game three times including a 4-of-6 effort in a home win over Brigham Young. Schakel, who committed 15 turnovers in 651 minutes last year, has 24 in two seasons and 1,106 total minutes (less than one turnover (.086) per 40 minutes played).

• With the graduation of Devin Watson and Jeremy Hemsley, who combined in their careers to average 12.3 points, 3.0 assists and 2.5 rebounds, head coach Brian Dutcher will replace his starting backcourt for the 2019-20 season. Look for transfers Malachi Flynn, a junior from Washington State, and senior KJ Feagin, from Santa Clara, to fill those rolls. The two have combined to average 13.6 points, 3.8 assists and 2.9 rebounds in their college careers.

• Malachi Flynn sat out the 2018-19 season after transferring from Washington State, but is ready to go in 2019-20. The high-scoring guard from Tacoma, Wash., averaged 15.8 points, 3.4 rebounds and 4.3 assists in 2017-18, his last season with the Cougars. He had 10 games with at least 20 points in 2017-18, including a 30-point effort vs. Colorado and a 24-point, five-rebound and six-assist performance vs. the Aztecs in November of 2017, at the Wooden Legacy in Fullerton. For his career, he has averaged 12.8 points, 3.2 rebounds and 3.6 assists in 62 games (61 starts).

• KJ Feagin is a graduate transfer from Santa Clara who has one year of eligibility and will compete for the Aztecs in 2019-20. Rated the #2 point guard by ESPN and STADIUM as well as #17 (ESPN) & #19 (STADIUM) overall on their lists of transfers who are immediately available to play, Feagin finished a four-year career at Santa Clara in 2018-19 ranked 26th on that program’s scoring list (1,182 points) and third in both three-point field goal (.398) and (.840) percentages. He earned All-Freshman Team, as well as second and first-team West Coast Conference (WCC) honors in his first three seasons with the Broncos. A starter in 81 of the 83 games in his career, he has averaged 14.2 points and 4.0 assists, while shooting .443 from the field, including .398 from beyond the three-point line.

• Adam Seiko, who utilized his redshirt in 2017-18, appeared in 32 games last season. Known for his defense, the 6-3, 195-pound guard showed he can shoot the ball from the perimeter making 42.5 percent of his shots from the floor (17-of-40), as well as 14-of-33 from three-point range (42.4 percent). He set career-highs of 13 points and five rebounds against Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Boston. Mass., native committed just 19 turnovers in 389 minutes of action and 14-of-17 made buckets last season (82.3 percent) were three-pointers.

• Aguek Arop returns for his sophomore season after appearing in 31 games in 2018-19. The native of Omaha, Neb., averaged 3.1 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.0 assists in 14.6 minutes of action per contest. His 18 blocks were the second most on the team and he ranked third in offensive rebounds (34) and fifth in assists (30). Among the non-starters he led the team in minutes, points, steals, blocks and rebounds, including offensive and defensive boards. Arop scored a season-high 11 points and grabbed five rebounds against Brown and contributed 10 points against New Mexico.

• Yanni Wetzell is a graduate transfer from Vanderbilt who has one year of eligibility and will compete for the Aztecs in 2019-20. The Auckland, New Zealand native averaged 5.9 points and 3.8 rebounds in his lone season of competition in the SEC and graduated with a degree in economics last Spring. Wetzell is a 6-10 forward who can score with his back to the basket, step out and hit from the three-point line, and run the floor.

• Joel Mensah, no relation to teammate Nathan Mensah, appeared in 15 games off the bench in 2018-19. He averaged 1.1 points and 1.0 rebounds and in 81 total minutes did not commit a turnover. Twice, vs. Texas Southern and at Boise State, scored a season-high four points. He is expected to take on a bigger roll in his sophomore season.

• Nolan Narain enters his senior season as the only Aztec who is a three-year letter winner. In 2018-19, the 6-10 forward played in a career-high 31 games and set career-bests in minutes (12.3/g), rebounds (2.2/g), blocks, assists and steals. Against Jackson State he scored 11 points on 3-of-4 shooting from the floor, including a three pointer, and hit each of his four free throw attempts in 12 minutes of action. For his career, he is a .577 shooter from the field and 55.6 percent of his rebound (69-of-124) have come off the offensive glass.

• Trey Pulliam begins his Aztecs career after two seasons at Navarro College in Corsicana, Texas, where he averaged 11.6 point, 4.9 assists and 3.6 rebounds in 58 games, of which 52 were starts. The 6-3 guard finished his career ranked second in assists (283), fifth in steals (101) and 11th in scoring (671) at Navarro College. After leading the team to the NJCAA Division I Region XIV championship game in 2018-19, his squad finished the year ranked 24th in the nation. He had 37 double-digit scoring games with a single-game high 30 points. He also dished out a career-high 10 assists on three occasions.

• Caleb Giordano, a 6-3 sophomore transfer, took a his redshirt season in 2018-19. The La Mesa, Calif., native spent one season at San Diego Miramar College, playing in 28 games with 14 starts. He averaged 9.1 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.3 assists, while shooting 44.8 percent from the floor, 73.4 percent from the free-throw line and 30.6 percent from behind the arc.

• Keshad Johnson, a 6-7 forward, was rated by ESPN as a four-star prospect and one of the top-25 high school players in California last year. He led San Leandro (Calif.) High with 14.4 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 2.3 blocks, 1.9 steals and had nine double doubles.
