He is one of the Mountain West’s premier three-point shooters, hitting 71-of-163 (.436) in 2019-20. For his career, 70.6 percent of his buckets (142-of-201) have come from the bonus distance, and his .927 percentage last season led the squad. • Junior forward Nathan Mensah started the first 13 games of the season, before an injury ended his year. SDSU’s .752 winning percentage is the 11th-best nationally over the last 10 years (complete list is on page 1). • SDSU enters the year having won at least 20 games and advancing to the postseason in 12 (8 NCAA, 4 NIT) of the last 15 years, the 2020 postseason was canceled due to a global pandemic. He woiuld be the sixth Aztec to be drafted by an NBA team since Brian Dutcher has been on the SDSU bench and is the 20th player overall, coached by Dutcher who has gone on to be drafted by an NBA franchise.

PLAYER PERSONNEL • San Diego State returns three starters in senior forward Matt Mitchell, senior guard Jordan Schakel and junior forward Nathan Mensah from the 2019-20 squad. The trio figures to be included in the team’s first five from the outset of the 2020-21 season. Schakel started in 31 games last year, and 47-of-93 in his career, while Mitchell finished 2019-20 with 19 consecutive starts and has made the starting lineup in 84-of-99 career games. Both Schakel and Mitchell appeared in all 32 games last year. Mensah started in each of the first 13 games in which appeared last year before an injury cut his season short. In his career, he has made 33 starts in the 47 games in which he has played.

• Matt Mitchell had a strong junior season that saw him average career bests 12.2 points (.468 FG, .393 3FG), 4.8 rebounds and 11 blocks, while holding top-three team rankings in 13 statistical categories. Built like a two-sport star, standing at 6-6 and weighing a svelte 235 pounds, Mitchell has scored in double figures 57 times in his career. He has averaged 11.0 points per game in his three seasons as an Aztec and with 22 points against New Mexico on Feb. 11, 2020, became the 34th player in program history to reach the 1,000-career point plateau. In 2019-20, Mitchell earned first and second-team All-Mountain West honors by separate votes of the coaches and media, respectively, and was an NABC second-team All-District 17 performer. In his first appearance of 2020-21 he will become the 33rd player in the program’s DI history to appear in 100 games.

• After setting career highs in nearly every statistical category as a sophomore, Jordan Schakel returned in 2019-20, as a junior, and continued to improve his game and established new career-bests. The sharpshooter knocked down career-highs by hitting 45.3 percent from the floor (105-of-232), including 43.6 percent of his three-point attempts (71-of-163), and 92.7 percent from the line (38-of-41), cementing himself as the team’s top shooter coming back in 2020-21. In his three seasons, Schakel’s scoring average has gone from 3.2 points as a freshman to 7.4 as a sophomore and 10.0 last season. If he continues his upward climb in the scoring column, he could become the 35th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point plateau (he begins the season with 632 points and would need to average 13.6 point in 27 games to reach the milestone). Last season, he made at least one three-pointer in 28-of-32 games, and at least four in a game five times, including a 5-of-7 effort in a road win at Brigham Young. Schakel, who committed 17 turnovers in 849 minutes last year, has 41 in three seasons and 1,955 total minutes (less than one turnover per 40 minutes played - 0.839:1). Schakel was named a member of the 2019 Continental Tires Las Vegas Invitational All-Tournament Team.

• Nathan Mensah returns in 2020-21 after his sophomore season was cut short due to injury. A starter in the first 13 games, the Labadi, Accra, Ghana native averaged 6.9 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.7 blocks during that span. In 2018-19, he was just the second SDSU freshman to have a 10-point, 10-, three- and two- game in the previous 23 years (the other to accomplish the feat was in 2009-10). At the time of his injury, Mensah led the team in field goal percentage (.617), offensive (27), defensive (62) and total rebounds (89), as well as blocks (22).

• With the graduation of KJ Feagin and departure to the professional ranks of Malachi Flynn, who averaged a combined 26.7 points, 8.1 assists and 7.7 rebounds last year, head coach Brian Dutcher will replace his starting backcourt in 2020-21. Look for Trey Pulliam, who transfered from Navarro College in Corsicana, Texas prior to last season, and senior Terrell Gomez, a graduate transfer from CSUN, to fill those rolls. The two have combined to average 23.1 points, 4.2 assists and 4.4 rebounds last year.

• Terrell Gomez joins the Aztecs in 2020-21 after earning his degree and transferring from CSUN. The high-scoring guard from Los Angeles, averaged 19.2 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 2019-20, his last season with the Matadors. In 32 games last season, he reached double figures 31 times, including a career-high 33 points against Pepperdine. Gomez led the nation in free throw percentage (.948), was fifth in three-point field goals (111), sixth in three-pointer field goals per game (3.5) and eighth in three-point field goal percentage (.440) in 2019-20. For his career, he has averaged 17.1 points, 2.3 rebounds and 2.9 assists in 96 games, all starts.

• Trey Pulliam enters his senior season after transferring to SDSU prior to last year’s campaign. The Bryan, Texas native appeared, off the bench, in all 32 games averaging 3.3 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 561 minutes. In two seasons at Navarro College in Corsicana, Texas, he averaged 11.6 point, 4.9 assists and 3.6 rebounds in 58 games, of which 52 were starts. The 6-3 guard finished his Navarro College career ranked second in assists (283), fifth in steals (101) and 11th in scoring (671). His squad finished the year ranked 24th in the nation, after he led them to the 2018-19 NJCAA Division I Region XIV championship game. He had 37 double-digit scoring games with a single-game high 30 points, and dished out a career-high 10 assists on three occasions.

• Adam Seiko, the team’s best on-ball defender, appeared in 29 games last season, his sophomore campaign. The 6-3, guard continued to show he can shoot the ball from the perimeter making 43.1 percent of his shots from the floor (28-of-65), as well as 20-of-54 from three-point range (37.0 percent). He made multiple treys in 6-of-13 games in which he scored from beyond the arc. The Boston. Mass., native has committed just 29 turnovers in 748 minutes of action, which works out to 1.5 turnovers per 40 minutes played. For his career 34-of-45 buckets (75.6 percent) have been three-pointers.

• Aguek Arop returns for his junior season after being limited to 22 games in 2019-20. The native of Omaha, Neb., and pound-for-pound the strongest player on the roster, averaged 3.0 points and 2.2 rebounds in 9.5 minutes of action per contest. Projecting his stats from 2019-20 per 40 minutes played, he would average 12.7 points, 9.2 rebounds, 1.5 assists and steals and 1.0 blocks. Among the non-starters he led the team in shooting percentage and rebounds. Arop grabbed a career-high six rebounds against Grand Canyon and Nevada and recorded a season-high eight points at BYU and against Utah State in the 2020 Mountain West Tournament championship game.
