Royals Notes - Detroit Tigers @ Kansas City Royals - Sunday, May 4, 2014 This & That

HOZ ORDERING THE DOUBLE-DOUBLE--Aside from being a menu item at a west coast hamburger chain, the double-double is also what Eric Hosmer has delivered this week, picking up a pair of 2-base hits last night, his second such game of the homestand...he also had a 2-double affair in Wednesday’s 4-2 win here over the Jays, KC’s most recent victory...Hosmer already has a dozen doubles in the books, good for second in the American League behind Minnesota’s Trevor Plouffe (13).

DUFF ADDS TO PICK TOTAL--Danny Duffy has only made 35 big league appearances over his three seasons with the Royals, but in that span he’s shown a solid move to first base...his nabbing of Ian Kinsler last night was Duff’s 11th of his brief career, second this year, tying Seattle’s Joe Biemel and Tampa Bay’s Jake Odorizzi for most in the A.L...since Duffy broke into the Majors in 2011, his 11 picks are tied with Franklin Morales for sixth most in the American League...among the hurlers ahead of Duff in that stretch is teammate James Shields, who has 19 to lead the pack and fellow southpaw teammate Bruce Chen, who has 13 in that span.

“ACE” ATOP ERA CHART--Rookie fireballer Yordano Ventura enters his second full month in the Majors with the best ERA among American League starting pitchers at 1.50, bettering Oakland’s Sonny Gray (1.76) and ranking third in the bigs behind Johnny Cueto (1.15) and Julio Teheran (1.47) in the N.L... Ventura’s 31 strikeouts in April are the most by a Royals’ rookie in the opening month, eclipsing Tom Gordon’s 28 in 1989...“Ace” had the seventh best ERA in the month of April in club history.

SERIES STREAK HALTED--Actually a pair of series streaks were snapped with last night’s lost, which iced this 3-game set for Detroit...it was KC’s first series loss in the last three after going 2-1 in Baltimore last weekend and 2-1 here vs. the Jays prior to the Tigers’ arrival...this also marks the first lost series at home this year, as KC had won its first four over the White Sox, Rays, Twins and Jays.

ANOTHER CHALLENGE-LESS AFFAIR--Neither manager had the need for a replay review again last night, the 14th time in the last 15 games that Ned Yost did not issue a challenge...his last trip to the field was a successfully challenged a call at first base in the second inning of Tuesday night’s game vs. Toronto, the first manager challenge Yost had made since April 17 in Houston...the overturning of the call upped Ned’s mark to 3-2 in replay challenges...KC was involved in 10 replay challenges in the first 14 games of the year, including 8 in its first 8 games...opposing managers are 3-3 under the new system...to review, each manager gets a challenge and for the first six innings and if he challenges correctly, he’ll receive another...calls will be defined as either a) Confirmed; b) Stands or C) Overturned.

HOLLY CHANCES SCARCE OF LATE--Greg Holland has had only one save opportunity since April 19 and that occurred here on Wednesday night when he closed out a win over the Blue Jays, giving him a 7-for-7 start to the year...Holland, who earned his first trip to the All-Star Game last year, has made good on 47 of his last 48 save opportunities, dating back to May 30 of last season...since that day, Holland has 5 more saves than any other pitcher in baseball ( - 42) and has allowed just 7 earned runs in 61.0 innings for a 1.03 ERA, holding opposing hitters to a .164 average...he’s also recorded 93 strikeouts in his last 61.0 innings, for an A.L.-best 13.72 strikeouts per 9.0 IP.

FRIARS NEXT ON AGENDA--The Royals hit the road this evening for the left coast and a 7-game tour of San Diego and Seattle...it begins tomorrow night with a 3-gamer in Petco Park where Kansas City has never won in six tries...overall, the Royals are 2-7 vs. the Padres, going 2-1 the only time San Diego visited Kauffman Stadium 12 years ago in 2002...KC will leave after a Wednesday matinee and head north to Seattle where the club will play from Thursday thru Sunday...the Royals are looking for a change of fortune in Safeco as well, going just 1-2 last year and 1-6 in the last two seasons.

NED IN HIS FOURTH FULL SEASON--The 16th full-time manager in franchise history, Ned Yost is two wins shy of 300 as the KC skipper with a 298-350 mark since he was named to his position on May 13, 2010...he recently passed John Wathan (287) and Hal McRae (286) to move into fourth on KC’s all-time wins list...he is 19 wins shy of catching Tony Muser, who is third with 317 victories...Yost, who managed six seasons in Milwaukee (2003-08), is 755-846 all-time as a Major League skipper.

FOX SPORTS IS HOME OF THE ROYALS--Kansas City is in its seventh season on Fox Sports Kansas City, featuring a record 150 telecasts in High Definition, up from the 140 a season ago...Ryan Lefebvre will anchor the booth for 95 telecasts and Steve Physioc will call the play-by-play for 55 games... Rex Hudler will work all 150 games as the analyst...the pre and post-game shows, Royals Live, are hosted by Joel Goldberg, who will be joined at every home game and several road affairs by Royals’ Hall of Famer Jeff Montgomery...the Royals will also have two telecasts in the national Saturday window on the FOX Network and three more telecasts on the new FS1...KC has already been notified of at least one ESPN national game on June 2 from St. Louis.
