We hope you enjoy the September edition of the Sportsline, the newsletter of The Norfolk Sports Club! Volume 31 #9 September, 2016 August brings Michael Cuddyer and Latrell Scott! Join us on Monday, September 12th for a luncheon meeting with Michael Cuddyer. Cuddyer is a former professional baseball out- fielder who played 15 seasons in MLB for the Minnesota Twins, Colorado Rockies, and New York Mets. He batted and threw right-handed. Cuddyer was a two-time MLB All-Star, and won a Silver Slugger Award in 2013, when he led the National League in batting average. Cud- dyer is a 1997 graduate of Great Bridge High School in Chesapeake, where he was a standout athlete in baseball, basketball, and football. Cuddyer was named Virginia's Player of the Year and Gatorade National baseball Player of the Year in 1997. He was also a member of USA Today's All-Star and the USA Junior National teams in 1997. Cuddyer was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 1st round (9th pick) of the 1997 amateur draft, but did not sign until August. He made his Major League Baseball debut on September 23, 2001. During 2004, Cuddyer started to see more time in the majors in the infield, playing second and third base. After beginning the 2006 season on the bench, Cuddyer emerged as a regular in right field and in the cleanup spot of the Twins batting order. On July 3, 2011, Cuddyer was named an All-Star for the first time as a managers' pick. On December 16, 2011, Cuddyer signed a three-year, $31.5 million deal with the Colorado Rockies. In 2013, Cuddyer set a personal best with a 27-game hitting streak, the longest in Rockies history to that point. Cuddyer was also named an All-Star for the second time in his career. Cuddyer finished the 2013 regular season with a .331 batting average to win the batting title by 10 points. Cuddyer signed a two-year contract with the New York Mets on November 10, 2014 worth $21 million. On July 24, 2015 Cuddyer was put on the 15 day disabled list due to a bone bruise in his left knee. With the Mets in 2015, Cuddyer appeared in the first World Series of his career. Cuddyer announced his retirement after the 2015 season. Join us on Monday, September 26th for a luncheon with NSU Head Football Coach, Latrell Scott. Scott was named the 17th head football coach in Norfolk State history on Dec. 16, 2014. In his first year as NSU head coach, Scott’s Spartans went 4-7 against a schedule including three Division I FBS teams. More important than wins and losses, Scott went about changing the culture of Spartan football in 2015, stressing accountability and discipline from his players on and off the field. Scott came to NSU following an outstanding two-year run as head coach at Virginia State University. Scott directed the Trojans to a 19-4 record and two Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Northern Division regular-season titles in his two seasons in Petersburg. For his efforts, Scott was named the 2014 CIAA Coach of the Year. In 2013, Scott was voted the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) College Division State Co-Coach of the Year and the Touchdown Club of Richmond’s state Division II/III Coach of the Year after guiding VSU to a 9-1 overall record and unblemished 7-0 mark in CIAA competition. The VSU football program also attained a top-25 ranking in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) weekly poll in 2013, another program first. NSU is the third head coaching position in Scott’s career. In addition to leading VSU for two years, Scott was head coach at the University of Richmond in 2010. At 34 years of age, Scott was the youngest head coach at the Division I level at the time of his appointment. He led the Spiders to a 6-5 mark that season. His overall record as a head coach is 29-16. Scott has 16 years of coaching experience. In addition to his previous stints as a head coach, Scott has also served as an assistant coach at James Madi- son University (2012), the University of Virginia (2009), the University of Tennessee (2008), Richmond (2005-07), VMI (2002-04), West- ern Carolina (2001) and Fork Union Military Academy (1999-2000).
