  • Mario Andretti to Be Inducted Into Canadian
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MARIO ANDRETTI TO BE INDUCTED INTO CANADIAN MOTORSPORT HALL OF FAME Toronto – June 18, 2013 – Mario Andretti is to be inducted into the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame at Toronto’s Glenn Gould Studio, as the International Category honoree of 2012. Andretti raced in Canada almost as long as in the United States, while winning worldwide in a sparkling 41-year career. He’ll be honored during the 19th annual Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame Induction Ceremonies presented by Canadian Tire, September 28th along with Canadian inductees the late Bob Armstrong, Jimmy Carr, John and Sharon Fletcher, Ron Fellows and Tom Walters with fans watching the ceremony and partying with the honorees afterward. Nobody drove a Formula One car faster than Andretti at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, where he won the pole and recorded the fastest lap in 1977, the final year the Canadian Grand Prix was held at Mosport before moving to Montreal. The classic circuit’s back straight was named the Andretti straight after he was clocked there at 178 miles per hour in a 1967 USAC Indy car race. On a global scale, Andretti was the first driver to win both the F-1 (1978) and Indy Car championships (1965-66-69 and 84). His versatility remains unparalleled. He won the Daytona 500 stock car race in 1967, and both the Indianapolis 500 and Pike’s Peak hill climb in 1969. On dirt tracks he was the USAC champion in 1974. In endurance racing, he co-drove to victory three times at Sebring, and following his retirement from Indy car shared a class win at the 1995 24 Hours of Le Mans.

  • Laurel Racing Camaro
Laurel Racing Camaro History The story of the Laurel Racing 1970 Camaro begins in 1968. In 1968 and 1969, Laurel Racing successfully campaigned a 1968 Camaro in Trans Am, A Sedan, and endurance races. As a result of this success, in 1970, Chevrolet Product Performance offered to support Laurel Racing’s effort in Chevrolet’s new “second generation” Camaro. Chevrolet had achieved great success in the Trans Am series with its first generation Camaro. When the second generation Camaro was introduced, the “Win on Sunday. Sell on Monday” philosophy led Chevrolet to offer its top performing teams new second generation Camaros. Based on this commitment, Larry Drover, owner of Laurel Racing offered his 1968 Camaro for sale. To sell his “first generation” Camaro, Larry placed a classified ad in Autoweek. The text of Larry’s advertisement read: Trans Am Camaro. Very competitive. Full roll cage, 1969 engine, all new suspension, mags, all possible factory options, extra wheels, 4 gear ratios, extra engine if desired. Preparing 1970 automobile. Laurel Racing, 3220 Rexford Drive, South Bend, IN 46615. (219) 234-2535 Autoweek, September 20, 1969 The Laurel Racing “first generation” Camaro at the 1969 24 Hours of Daytona. After winning the T/A championship, Roger Penske announced that, for 1970, Penske Racing would compete in the T/A championship with AMC Javelins.

  • The Indy Racing League and the Indianapolis 500
The Indy Racing League and the Indianapolis 500: Increasing Competition in Open-Wheeled Automobile Racing in the United States Robert W. White Department of Sociology and Andrew J. Baker Department of Geography School of Liberal Arts IUPUI We thank Terri Talbert-Hatch and Pete Hylton for their comments and support of Motorsports Studies. This is especially evident in recent years. The 1996 “split” between the Indy Racing League (IRL; later, the IndyCar Series) and Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART; later the Champ Car World Series) severely hurt the sport. Following the split there was a well-documented decline in fan interest from which the sport has not recovered. Less understood, however, is that under the Indy Racing League the Indianapolis 500, the premier event in open-wheeled racing in the United States, became more competitive. Ironically, while fan interest decreased in the Indy Racing League era, the quality of racing increased. The increased competition associated with the Indy Racing League is a historically significant development that bodes well for the future of the sport.

FAST FACT The highest recorded temperature in the U.S. was 134° F (56.7° C) in Death Valley, Calif., on July 10, 1913. The highest recorded track temperature during an Indy car race was 137° F (58.3° C) on July 7, 2013 at Pocono Raceway. Graham Rahal raises his fist in celebration after taking the checkered flag at his home track of Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, putting him within nine points of championship frontrunner Juan Pablo Montoya. John Cote/IMS Photo WHAT TO WATCH FOR THIS WEEKEND: MONTOYA LOOKS TO TIGHTEN GRASP ON LEAD: With wins at St. Petersburg and the Indianapolis 500, Juan Pablo Montoya remains atop the Verizon IndyCar Series point standings. The Colombian, who has won four of his previous 10 500-mile races, leads Graham Rahal by nine points and Scott Dixon, Helio Castroneves and Will Power are within striking distance. Can Montoya repeat at Pocono and strengthen his hold on the series championship lead? ANDRETTI SEEKS BREAKTHROUGH WIN AT HOME TRACK: Marco Andretti will compete in a virtual hometown race at Pocono. Andretti can lean on family ties for some advice as Pocono is one of two tracks where all three generations of racing’s most famous family have had success. Andretti’s grandfather, open- wheel great Mario Andretti, won the 1986 race, while his father Michael won pole for the race in 1986. Marco claimed the pole for the race in 2013. KARAM RACES AT HOME: Like the Andretti family, Sage Karam hails from nearby Nazareth, Pa., and will be racing in front of friends and family.
