    The 18th edition of the Marrakech International Film Festival runs from 29 November to 7 December 2019 12 BIG NAMES FROM WORLD CINEMA IN CONVERSATION WITH MARRAKECH AUDIENCES Rabat, 14 November 2019. The “Conversation with” section is one of the highlights of the Marrakech International Film Festival and returns during the 18th edition for some fascinating exchanges with some of those who create the magic of cinema around the world. As its name suggests, “Conversation with” is a forum for free-flowing discussion with some of the great names in international filmmaking. These sessions are free and open to all: industry professionals, journalists, and the general public. During last year’s festival, the launch of this new section was a huge hit with Moroccan and internatiojnal film lovers. More than 3,000 people attended seven conversations with some legendary names of the big screen, offering some intense moments with artists, who generously shared their vision and their cinematic techniques and delivered some dazzling demonstrations and fascinating anecdotes to an audience of cinephiles. After the success of the previous edition, the Festival is recreating the experience and expanding from seven to 11 conversations at this year’s event. Once again, some of the biggest names in international filmmaking have confirmed their participation at this major FIFM event. Au lendemain du premier tour, il ne lui reste que très peu de temps pour préparer avec son équipe rapprochée, le débat télévisé qui l’opposera à son adversaire. Peu apprécié des médias et de l’opinion, il doit à tout prix améliorer son image et affiner son argumentaire. À cette fin, il organise un week-end de travail dans sa propriété. Le candidat, d’abord docile et fragile, se plie à toutes les exigences de son staff, quand, arrivé au bord de l’épuisement, il découvre qu’il est en fait prisonnier d’une terrible manipulation dont il ne s’extraira qu’en jouant sa propre partition... A partir de quand cela s’est-il mué en désir ou en plaisir de réaliser ? Le désir est tellement mélangé à la peur qu’il est difficile de nommer le moment précis où naît l’envie de faire un film.

Il est loin, le temps où les directeurs pouvaient tabler sur la production régulière d'auteurs à succès comme Anouilh, Achard, Roussin, Deval ou même Françoise Dorin. Seuls champions ac­ tuels du privé: Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt, Jean­ Pierre Bacri et Agnès jaoui, Yasmina Reza - encore cette dernière a-t-elleété découverte par le subventionné. La raison de cette carence? Les directeurs du privé n'investissent pas, comme les éditeurs, à long terme. Il est rare qu'un premier roman soit un succès commercial. Il n'empêche qu'il faut publier les jeunes auteurs pour se constituer, petit à petit, une « écurie ». Or, pendant des années, la plupart des directeurs du privé ont préféré faire leur marché à Londres ou à New York afin d'y acheter, « clé en main », les droits de succès éprouvés. Quitte, dans certains cas, à reproduire la mise en scène à l'identique. Et ça a marché. Un certain temps. Pendant lequel une génération entière de jeunes auteurs français s'est éloignée du théâtre: à quoi bon suer sang et eau pour écrire des pièces, si elles doivent s'empiler sur les bureaux de directeurs qui ne prennent pas même le temps de les lire ?     THE GREAT WAR: A CINEMATIC LEGACY OPENS AT MoMA ON THE CENTENARY OF THE START OF WORLD WAR I The Great War: A Cinematic Legacy August 4—September 21, 2014 The Roy and Niuta Titus Theaters NEW YORK, July 8, 2014–Opening on the 100th anniversary of the day World War I began, The Museum of Modern Art’s The Great War: A Cinematic Legacy runs from August 4 through September 21, 2014, highlighting 60 feature-length films and thematic programs that attempt to provide a comprehensive view of the war as portrayed in film. The various films focus on prewar activities; espionage; the battlefields in the trenches, in the air, and on and beneath the sea; actualités; and the various homefronts before, during, and after the war. Familiar films, such as A Farewell to Arms (1932) and Lawrence of Arabia (1962), along with several lesser-known works from as far away as New Zealand—including Chunuk Bair (1992)—reflect the universality of a war that reshaped the prevailing values of what passed for civilization. In August, the program is predominately drawn from the early years, either during the war or in the succeeding decades, and includes several silent films. The program in September will concentrate mainly on later, more contemporary films up to, and including, Steven Spielberg’s War Horse (2011). The Great War is organized by Charles Silver, Curator, with Dave Kehr, Adjunct Curator, Department of Film, The Museum of Modern Art. Many of the films in the series deal with the entrenched stalemate in France, including Verdun, Vision d’Histoire (Verdun, Vision of History) (1928) directed by Leon Poirier.
