Lewis NUMBER OF PAGES: vii, 162 ii Abstract The laws of Ontario operate on the principle that indivi duals should govern their own conduct unless it affects others adversely. The laws are created to protect individuals and their property and to ensure that citizens respect the rights of others. However, laws are protected and entrenched which defy this principle by permitting and fostering intolerance. This thesis addresses the local option laws of Ontario's liquor legislation which protect and legitimize invasion of personal liberty. These laws permit municipalities to prohi bit or restrict retail sale of liquor within their boundaries by vote or by COQ~cil decision. Local option has persisted t:b.roughout Ontario's history and is unlikely to be abolished despite the growing acceptance of liquor in society. To explain the longevity of these la.... ·ts, J.R. Gusfield' s approach to understanding moral crusades is used. Local option laws have become symbols of the status and influence of the so ber, industrious middleclass of the 1800's who founded Ontario. The right to control drinking reassures people vlho adhere to the traditional values that their views are respected in society. -

PROHIBITION’S PROVING GROUND: AUTOMOBILE CULTURE AND DRY ENFORCEMENT ON THE TOLEDO-DETROIT-WINDSOR CORRIDOR, 1913-1933 Joseph Boggs A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS May 2019 Committee: Michael Brooks, Advisor Rebecca Mancuso © 2019 Joseph Boggs All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Michael Brooks, Advisor The rapid rise of an automobile culture in the 1910s and 20s provided ordinary North Americans greater mobility, freedom, privacy, and economic opportunity. Simultaneously, the United States and Canada witnessed a surge in “dry” sentiments and laws, culminating in the passage of the 18th Amendment and various provincial acts that precluded the outright sale of alcohol to the public. In turn, enforcement of prohibition legislation became more problematic due to society’s quick embracing of the automobile and bootleggers’ willingness to utilize cars for their illegal endeavors. By closely examining the Toledo-Detroit-Windsor corridor—a region known both for its motorcar culture and rum-running reputation—during the time period of 1913-1933, it is evident why prohibition failed in this area. Dry enforcers and government officials, frequently engaging in controversial policing tactics when confronting suspected motorists, could not overcome the distinct advantages that automobiles afforded to entrepreneurial bootleggers and the organized networks of criminals who exploited the transnational nature of the region. vi TABLE OF CONTENTS Page INTRODUCTION ................................................................................................................. 1 CHAPTER I. It demon- strates that gun regulation has long been an important and contentious issue in Canada. Cheap revolvers were deemed a growing danger by the 1870s. A per- ception emerged that new forms of pistols increased the number of shooting accidents, encouraged suicide, and led to murder. -

The Keepers’ Trade: Skills, Attributes and the Pursuit of the Hotel Trade in Late Nineteenth-Century Guelph A Thesis Presented to The Faculty of Graduate Studies The University of Guelph by Shawn Day In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts April 2004 © 2004, Shawn Day Abstract Shawn L. Day University of Guelph, 2004 Advisor: Dr. Douglas McCalla This study explores the nineteenth-century commercial hotel and its associated business from the perspective of the proprietor. Five dominant themes emerge from the study. The keeper possessed business, inter-personal and political skills that contributed to the success of the enterprise. Personal skills allowed the keeper to maintain respectability, both within the trade and within the community. Hotelkeepers pursued a wealth accumulation strategy that rested primarily upon their business skills. Family participation contributed to the running of the hotel and the success of the business. Furthermore, the predominance of those of Irish ethnicity amongst keepers suggests that there were ethnic and religious dimensions to the trade. Evidence drawn largely from primary sources such as record books, invoices, receipts, business directories and census records allows for the reconstruction of the business structure and operation of two Guelph area hotels during this period. Dated June 15, 1819, with Sutherland signature next to a large part of a red wax seal. Folds and small faults, still a lovely item and a must have for any serious postal historian. Daniel Sutherland was appoint- ed Postmaster of Montreal in 1807 and also held the offi ce of Military Postmaster during the War of 1812. He replaced 1005 1890, House of Commons Debates Publication (6th Parlia- George Heriot as Postmaster General of Upper and Lower ment, 1890) mailed with a large wrapper showing House of Canada in 1816, and was replaced in 1828 by his son-in Law Commons Free (Davis CH-4i) from P. -

Since 1922, the Federal government has erected plaques and monuments on the recommendation of the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada to commemorate persons, places or events which are of national historic signifi cance. Locations where such commemorations take place are called national historic sites. There are now almost 800 of these sites in Canada, of which more than 200 are in Ontario. This booklet is intended to introduce the reader to those elements of Canadian national historical heritage singled out for commemoration in Ontario. Church and State in the Confederation Debates of 1865 By Ian Alexander Robert Mackay A Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies of The University of Manitoba in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of MASTER OF ARTS Department of History Joint Master's Program University of Manitoba / University of Winnipeg Winnipeg, Manitoba Copyright © 2017 by Ian Alexander Robert Mackay Abstract Since the 1990s, historians and political scientists have been studying the previously discounted political thought of the Fathers of Confederation. They have uncovered much, but have so far neglected ideas concerning relations between church and state. This thesis recognizes the Victorian, Christian context of Confederation and asks what influence faith had on Canadian constitution making. It studies discussions relevant to political philosophy, education, and worldview in general in the Province of Canada's ratification debates on the Quebec Resolutions in 1865. Chapter 1 demonstrates the influence of beliefs about Canada's standing as a Christian nation, the sinfulness and fallibility of human nature, the importance of religious liberty on the founders' constitutional preferences, and their support for the British constitutional tradition of mixed government. Chapter 2 shows how their different Protestant and Roman Catholic convictions about the eternal nature of the human soul impacted their views on the group rights issue of educational systems. Chapter 3 examines the presence of providence-based understandings of history and how they shaped the Canadian founders' vision for the new dominion. The thesis argues that a perception of 'God and state' had a widespread and foundational influence at Confederation. An orientation towards Christian truth and responsibility shaped the founders' worldview, political philosophy, specific political clashes, and, ultimately, their constitution making. -
