    viernes, 25 de mayo de 2018 Diego Ropero nos acercó ayer a la figura de Fray Antonio de Olivares fundador de San Antonio de Texas El director del archivo histórico de Moguer, Diego Ropero, pronunció ayer una interesante conferencia en la que profundizó en la figura del franciscano moguereño Fray Antonio de Olivares, fundador de la ciudad de San Antonio de Texas, con motivo del tricentenario de este acontecimiento. (http://www.aytomoguer.es/export/sites/moguer/es/.galleries/fotos-noticias/2018/05/Diego-Ropero-durante-su-intervencion.jpg) Durante su intervención, que contó con una gran afluencia de personas, entre ellas los concejales Pilar Rodríguez y Enrique Soriano, Diego Ropero nos acercó a esta singular figura nacida en Moguer en el primer tercio del siglo XVII, explicando las relaciones de su familia con el Moguer de la época, y detallando la gran labor misionera que realizó principalmente en los actuales territorios de México y el sur de Estados Unidos, con especial atención a las vicisitudes que le llevaron a fundar hace justo este mes 300 años, la misión de San Antonio Valero, que fue el germen de la actual ciudad de San Antonio de Texas, una de las más populosas urbes del país norteamericano. Hoy viernes a las 20,30 horas se celebra el acto institucional de conmemoración de este tricentenario, con una ofrenda floral ante el monumento a Fray Antonio de Olivares en la puerta del Archivo, y un concierto del grupo de camára del Liceo Municipal de la Música en el teatro Felipe Godínez. Fray Antonio de Olivares Fray Antonio de Olivares nació en Moguer en la década de 1630 en el seno de la familia Olivares, una de las más pudientes y consideradas del momento, que además se unieron mediante distintos matrimonios con los Gupil de Herrera, quienes aportaron prestigio y riquezas al clan, así como un alto reconocimiento en todas las esferas de la sociedad, siendo el tráfico comercial con distintas plazas de la Península, Francia, Holanda y, especialmente, las Indias el sostén económico que engrosó un patrimonio más que respetable.

Cunningham* he 1716 Domingo Ramón and Fray Isidro Félix de Espinosa expedi- T tion into the province of the Tejas Indians laid the foundation for Spanish domination in the region that was to become modern-day East Texas during a critical period of Spanish and French competition for con- trol of the area. This article provides an introduction to the historical sig- nificance and context of the expedition, as well as new annotated English translation of the Ramón diary, which for the first time is based on the original diary manuscript.1 Annotations included with the translation * Debbie S. Collaboratives were formed with public institutions to further develop presentations commemorating our City’s history. Many months were spent on these projects and in the year 2018, they will be presented to the public in open venues. An out-come of this year’s celebration is this publication, “Tricentennial Chronology and The Founding Events In The History of San Antonio And Bexar County”. The last published chronology of San Antonio was in 1950 by Edward Hunsinger. For this new study, approximately 1½ years was spent developing additional details and entries of events in San Antonio’s 300-year history. Other chronologies were studied, books were referenced and honored historians were consulted. Every attempt was made to edit and re-edit the many editions of the chronology until this latest edition is being published.

    Texas: The Complete Story Preface The Texas history I learned in school was so glorious and so alien to me. The events and the personalities in these accounts were so much bigger than life yet so distant and surreal and this in spite of being a descendant of one of the families that settled in South Texas in 1748. Real Texans came from Tennessee and they brought with them energy, know-how and democracy while we did nothing of value. We were just here. Later, in college, history courses became more interesting with more discussions and more challenges, yet it was still alien. Some Hispanic names were mentioned, Juan Seguin who actually fought at San Jacinto, Lorenzo de Zavala, interim vice president of the Republic of Texas and a few others, but nothing really specific other than they were on the Texian side of the conflict. Some of the books even mentioned that many Tejanos joined the Anglos in their fight for independence, but it was more of an after-thought stated to show inclusion and highlight the evilness of Santa Anna without delving into the Tejano motives or visions of their future. And though over half of the names of places in the state, including the name of the state itself, were in Spanish, we remained on the periphery and were not included in its history. Porfirio Sanz Camañes Ciudad Real, 2017 RESUMEN La frontera septentrional novohispana fue un lugar inhóspito, un territorio de enormes dimensiones dividido en provincias, de la que Texas, objeto de nuestro estudio, se ubicaba en su extremo más oriental. La lucha entre las potencias europeas por controlar el litoral que rodea el golfo de México tuvo como como consecuencia el deseo de emprender toda una serie de expediciones desde el siglo XVI que derivaron finalmente en el establecimiento de una colonia francesa en lo que hoy es Texas. Tras el fracaso de La Salle a finales del siglo XVII, los españoles comprendieron la necesidad de ocupar aquel territorio. Se decidió llevar a cabo un proyecto misional en el este de la actual Luisiana, de modo que se creyó conveniente establecer un enlace con Coahuila a través de una nueva misión y un nuevo presidio. De esta manera surgió el presidio de San Antonio de Béjar, junto a la misión Franciscana de San Antonio de Valero en 1718. Gradualmente este presidio fue adquiriendo más importancia dentro de aquella provincia. En 1719 representó el enclave desde donde retomar el control de la provincia que había caído en manos de los franceses. Esta circunstancia tuvo como resultado que el marqués de Aguayo decidiese implantar más misiones bajo su protección.

    miércoles, 02 de mayo de 2018 Moguer participa estos días en el 300 aniversario de la fundación de la ciudad de San Antonio de Texas En estos días se cumple el 300 aniversario de la fundación de la ciudad de San Antonio de Texas por el moguereño Fray Antonio de Olivares, una efeméride que la populosa ciudad estadounidense celebra con varios actos institucionales a los que asiste una representación de la ciudad de Moguer. http://www.aytomoguer.es/export/sites/moguer/es/.galleries/fotos-noticias/2018/05/Estatua-de-Fray-Antonio-de-Olivares-en-el-acceso-al-Archivo-Historico-de-Moguer.jpg La concejala de Cultura y Diputada provincial Lourdes Garrido, y el director del Archivo Histórico y la Biblioteca Iberoamericana de Moguer, Diego Ropero, se han desplazado hasta San Antonio como representantes de la localidad en la que nació el monje franciscano que fundó el 1 de mayo de 1718 la misión de San Antonio de Valero, conocida popularmente como El Álamo, que sería el origen de la hoy gran ciudad de San Antonio, actualmente la séptima más importante de Estados Unidos con una población aproximada de 1,5 millones de habitantes. Con motivo del 300 aniversario de la fundación de la misión por el franciscano moguereño que partió hacia el Nuevo Mundo desde el convento de La Esperanza, la ciudad de San Antonio está celebrando estos días la gran efeméride con numerosos actos, entre los que se encuentran los dedicados mañana 3 de mayo a “los fundadores”, unos actos en los que participan como invitados de honor tanto Lourdes Garrido como Diego Ropero, quienes harán entrega al alcalde de San Antonio, Ron Nirenberg durante la bienvenida que les dará al frente del Concejo de la ciudad, de una placa conmemorativa recordando la decisiva aportación del franciscano moguereño a la fundación de San Antonio para que sea colocada en algún espacio emblemático, así como de una colección de libros del Nobel Juan Ramón Jiménez.
