It is not intended to be fully comprehensive and anyone requiring detailed information on any topic is encouraged to refer to the list of selected references and additional material not listed. It is also recommended that all facts quoted here are checked from primary sources. A major source for this document was the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area Nomination (see reference list), which is a very useful compendium of information but of limited availability. All other key sources used in compiling this summary are listed in the references, along with some other useful documents which were not consulted. Some items of information contained here (eg. total area of wilderness and comparisons with other east coast wilderness areas) have been derived from original research for this project. -

APPENDIX 3 SECTION 5A ASSESSMENTS “SEVEN PART TESTS” Appendix 3: Seven Part Tests Swamp Sclerophyll Forest Swamp Sclerophyll Forest on Coastal Floodplains of the NSW North Coast, Sydney Basin and South East Corner bioregions is listed as an Endangered Ecological Community under the NSW Threatened Species Conservation Act (1995). It is not listed under the schedules of the Commonwealth Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act (1999). Swamp Sclerophyll Forest on Coastal Floodplains of the NSW North Coast, Sydney Basin and South East Corner bioregions includes and replaces Sydney Coastal Estuary Swamp Forest in the Sydney Basin bioregion Endangered Ecological Community. This community is associated with humic clay loams and sandy loams, on waterlogged or periodically inundated alluvial flats and drainage lines associated with coastal floodplains (NSW Scientific Committee 2011). It occurs typically as open forests to woodlands, although partial clearing may have reduced the canopy to scattered trees or scrub. The understorey may contain areas of fernland and tall reedland or sedgeland which in turn may also form mosaics with other floodplain communities and often fringe wetlands with semi-permanent standing water (NSW Scientific Committee 2011). Swamp Sclerophyll Forest on Coastal Floodplains generally occurs below 20 metres ASL, often on small floodplains or where the larger floodplains adjoin lithic substrates or coastal sand plains (NSW Scientific Committee 2011). The species composition of Swamp Sclerophyll Forest is primarily determined by the frequency and duration of waterlogging and the texture, salinity nutrient and moisture content of the soil. The species composition of the trees varies considerably, but the most widespread and abundant dominant trees include Eucalyptus robusta Swamp Mahogany, Melaleuca quinquenervia and, south from Sydney, Eucalyptus botryoides Bangalay and Eucalyptus longifolia Woollybutt (OEH 2015a). -

Rare or threatened vascular plant species of Wollemi National Park, central eastern New South Wales. Stephen A.J. Bell Eastcoast Flora Survey PO Box 216 Kotara Fair, NSW 2289, AUSTRALIA Abstract: Wollemi National Park (c. 32o 20’– 33o 30’S, 150o– 151oE), approximately 100 km north-west of Sydney, conserves over 500 000 ha of the Triassic sandstone environments of the Central Coast and Tablelands of New South Wales, and occupies approximately 25% of the Sydney Basin biogeographical region. 94 taxa of conservation signiicance have been recorded and Wollemi is recognised as an important reservoir of rare and uncommon plant taxa, conserving more than 20% of all listed threatened species for the Central Coast, Central Tablelands and Central Western Slopes botanical divisions. For a land area occupying only 0.05% of these divisions, Wollemi is of paramount importance in regional conservation. Surveys within Wollemi National Park over the last decade have recorded several new populations of signiicant vascular plant species, including some sizeable range extensions. This paper summarises the current status of all rare or threatened taxa, describes habitat and associated species for many of these and proposes IUCN (2001) codes for all, as well as suggesting revisions to current conservation risk codes for some species. For Wollemi National Park 37 species are currently listed as Endangered (15 species) or Vulnerable (22 species) under the New South Wales Threatened Species Conservation Act 1995. An additional 50 species are currently listed as nationally rare under the Briggs and Leigh (1996) classiication, or have been suggested as such by various workers. Seven species are awaiting further taxonomic investigation, including Eucalyptus sp. -

Kablick III1 1Naval Research Laboratory, USA 2ACT Emergency Services Agency, Australia 3Applied and Industrial Mathematics Research Group, School of Physical, Environmental and Mathematical Sciences University of New South Wales, Australia (Manuscript received March 2012; revised August 2012) On 22 November 2006 a pair of pyrocumulonimbus (pyroCb) storms, roughly 75 km apart, erupted simultaneously in the forests of Wollemi and Blue Mountains National Parks. The so-named Wollemi and Grose Valley fires blew up at an un- usual time—late morning—and injected smoke into the uppermost troposphere. This is the first pyroCb event recorded during active pyroconvection by NASA’s A-Train satellite constellation. Hence we show for the first time the pyroconvec- tion column from simultaneous passive imagers, active lidar and radar, and UV backscattering instruments. There are no previous reports of pyroCb activity from Wollemi, and a report of the Grose Valley pyroconvective column limited its ver- tical extent to 6 km. Here we show, using ground-based radar data, that both fires blew up quasi-simultaneously before local noon. The Grose Valley pyroCb penetrated to the tropopause, the Wollemi pyroCb injection height exceeded the tropopause by 1–3 km. Analysis of a portion of the smoke plume sampled by the A-Train on 23 November confirms tropopause injection altitude. We explore a va- riety of meteorological observations and analyses to determine that the blow ups on 22 November 2006 (and only on this date in the fires’ lifetimes) were mostly a consequence of anomalous boundary layer warmth and wind speed. -
