Since the first outbreak in the southern peninsula of Bali in November 2008, rabies quickly spread across the districts/municipality, until July 2015 had spread across 54 subdistricts and 263 villages. The proportion of rabies cases in the subdistricts and villages the highest occurred in 2011 is shown 94.7% and 36.7%, respectively, but its spread dropped dramatically in 2013 only occurred in 23 subdistricts (40.4%) and 38 villages (4,2%), though rabies outbreak back by increasing the number and distribution of rabies cases significantly in 2014, spread over 94 villages even until July 2015 spread over 89 villages. Rabies attacks the various breeds of dogs with the proportion of rabies in the local dogs showed the highest (98.44%), as well as the male dog, is very significantly higher than female dogs. By age group, the proportion seen in the age group of 1 to 2 years showed the highest (39.9%). Public Opinion Polls and Data Research – ascertaining trends in South Korea’s dog meat industry and pet culture Key Findings DOG MEAT & GAESOJU CONSUMPTION BEHAVIOR TRENDS The rate of respondents who have consumed dog meat is decreasing steadily • Compared to 2017, the rate of respondents who have consumed dog meat decreased by 5.9% in 2020 (64.8% vs. 58.9%) • 83.8% of respondents answered that that they haven’t consumed dog meat or they are not willing to consume it in the future. The consumption of dog meat is concentrated during the summer (bok nal), especially Cho- bok (1st bok day, July) • 72.9% of consumers said their dog meat consumption is seasonal (vs. 57% in 2017), 95.9% of which do so in summer. PERCEPTION & ATTITUDE TOWARD DOG MEAT CONSUMPTION The rate of respondents who support banning dog meat increased by 23.9% from 34.7% in 2017 to 58.6% in 2020 The rate of respondents who are opposed to banning dog meat decreased by 23.9 % from 65.3% in 2017 to 41.4 % in 2020 There is a significant decrease from 2017 to 2020 by 21.1% of people who believed dogs could be eaten just like other livestock (51.9% to 30.8%); and by 11.2% of people who believe there is a difference between “meat dogs” and “pet dogs” (44.4% to 33.2%). A range of tools exist which can be applied to address EID event detection, preparedness and response. Here we use a case study of rabies in Southeast Asia and Oceania to illustrate, via nearly a decade of research activities, how such tools can be systematically integrated into a framework for EID preparedness. During the past three decades, canine rabies has spread to previously free areas of Southeast Asia, threatening the rabies-free status of countries such as Timor Leste, Papua New Guinea and Australia. The program of research to address rabies preparedness in the Oceanic region has included scanning and surveillance to define the emerging nature of canine rabies within the Southeast Asia region; field studies to collect information on potential reservoir species, their distribution and behaviour; participatory and sociological studies to identify priorities for disease response; and targeted risk assessment and disease modelling studies. Dog Meat Politics in a Vietnamese Town
DOG MEAT POLITICS IN A VIETNAMESE TOWN Nir Avieli Ben Gurion University In 1999 there were only two semi-clandestine dog-meat restaurants in Hoi An, a town in Central Vietnam. In 2004 there were dozens, serving mostly men of the new middle class. This article explores the sudden popularity of dog meat in Hoi An and discusses its meanings. Based on traditional forms, eating dog meat expresses masculinity. While class distinctions, religious propensities, and pro- cesses of modernization shape local attitudes regarding this culinary trend, the overarching theme that explains the sudden proliferation of dog-meat restau- rants in Hoi An is political and has to do with the diners’ attitude towards the regime: eating dog meat expresses political allegiance, while avoiding it indi- cates disdain. (Dog meat, politics, masculinity, Confucianism, Vietnam) Dog-meat restaurants and eating dog meat have long been popular in the North of Vietnam, but not in the Center and South. In 1999, there were only a couple of places serving dog meat in Hoi An, a town in Central Vietnam. One was hidden in a maze of alleys beyond the town’s ancient quarter; the other was located outside the town, by a small country road. The signs for both restaurants read “Thit Cay” and not “Thit Cho” (dog meat). Cay, according to my Vietnamese language teacher, “is a kind of fox and a euphemism for dog meat in the Center and South, used to camouflage places selling dog meat.” But in 2004, there were dozens of eating venues throughout the town announcing “Thit Cho.” This rapid development of a culinary fashion stimulated exploring why dog meat became popular so quickly, and if any meanings were attributed to eating it. -

Rabies in Europe in 20102019. Bulg. J. Vet. Med. (online first). The paper presents the epizootic and epidemiological situation of rabies in European countries during the last decade. The presented results indicate that the oral immunisation of fox anti-rabies (ORV), used in many European countries, significantly reduced the number of rabies cases found in ground mammals, but did not eliminate the virus at all. Currently, the largest reservoir of the virus are Eastern European countries where there are no immunisation activities or their effectiveness is low. Due to the absence of geographical barriers, the virus reappears in countries that have been described as free from rabies. As a rule, it is dragged into these areas along with the movement of companion animals and by people travelling to countries where the prevalence of the virus is common. It should be emphasised that due to the significant elimination of the virus in wild and domestic animals, it found quite quickly found a new reservoir in a specific group of mammals, having the ability to fly, like bats. Currently there is no possibility of carrying out any preventive measures in bats, so all the virus strains found in this group of animals are dangerous to humans, raising possibilities of epidemiological threat. -
