The Best Products for Natural Hair BY SHAYNATURAL · DECEMBER 17, 2018

I know I throw a lot of products at you with our Top 5 Friday’s Series, but I think it’s time for me to share with you my favorite, holy grail, ride or die products. Today is the day. These are the best products for natural hair. Grab some wine, coffee, water, or your beverage of choice and a snack and let’s have a chat about some products. My all time favorite topic! I love trying new products and I would consider myself to be a product junkie. I have tried tons of products over my 4 years of being natural, but these products I will be telling you about today have stuck with me throughout my journey and will continue to live in my stash.

If I could live with only these products, I would be satisfied and my hair would be healthy, thriving and looking bomb. As I have gotten to know my natural hair over the years, I know what ingredients to look for in my products because of the similar ingredients of my holy grail products. Keep reading to see the similarities.

Side note: I think this would be a good exercise for you to do. Go through your stash or think about products you have used that you seem to keep going back to. Take a look at the ingredients list of the products and see if you see any similar ingredients. If you do, then you know to look for products that contain that or those ingredients. This will help you out tremendously when shopping for new products. Moisturizing Shampoos SheaMoisture Raw Shea Moisture Retention Shampoo- 13oz

So, when it comes to shampoos, I prefer them to be sulfate-free, moisturizing, cleanses my hair gently, without stripping my hair of its natural , with water being the first ingredient. I have tried some other shampoos that I love, but it’s something about these ones. I just keep repurchasing them. Related Article: Top 5 Sulfate-Free & Clarifying Shampoos for Natural Hair I love SheaMoisture products because they are all made with natural and organic ingredients, but they aren’t expensive. I would say they are in the middle range price wise. There are def products that are cheaper and they are also products that are more expensive. I also love SheaMoisture because they are black-owned, cruelty-freeand silicone-free. I’m not 100% silicone- free, but most of my products are. This was the first ever shampoo I fell in love with for my natural hair. I have been using this shampoo and the conditioner since I was transitioning. Another SheaMoisture shampoo for the win! This one is awesome because it clarifies my hair, but it is still moisturizing. Clarifying is like a detox for your hair. It gets rid of everything. This one is my holy grail because it doesn’t strip my hair, but my hair gets squeaky clean. Conditioners Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter Restorative Conditioner- 13oz

Sticking with the Raw Shea Butter Line from SheaMoisture, this conditioner is said to detangle, moisturize, repair and restore lifeless dry, damaged and over-processed hair.

I chose this one as my holy grail because I like to use the same shampoo and conditioner from the same product line because they are formulated to work together and is pH balanced if used together. But not only that. I can finger detangle my hair with this and it leaves my hair feeling like butta. It’s thick in consistency and my hair love it some thick up products. This also can be used as a deep conditioner and leave-in. I have used them as both and loved the results.

SheaMoisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Shine Conditioner- 13oz

Also, sticking with the Curl & Shine Line, this conditioner contains coconut oil to hydrate and protect hair while reducing shedding. Silk protein to smooth hair and neem oil to control frizz.

This one is my holy grail because again, I like to use the same shampoo and conditioner from the same line and it also allows me to finger detangle, leaves my hair extremely soft and manageable and it contains a lot of my go-to ingredients. Again with some similar ingredients: water being the first ingredient is major key, coconut oil, shea butter, , hydrolyzed protein, aloe leaf juice.

Ingredients: Water, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter*~, Stearyl Alcohol, Glyceryl Caprylate, Behentrimonium Chloride, Cetyl Alcohol, Panthenol, Mangifera Indica (Mango) Seed Butter, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil,Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein Pg-Propyl Silanetriol, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Melia Azadirachta Seed Oil, Sodium Lauroyl Hydrolyzed Silk, Hibiscus Rosa-Sinensis Flower Extract, Tocopherol, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Glyceryl Undecylenate, Fragrance (Essential Oil Blend) Deep Conditioners/Masques SheaMoisture Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil Intensive Hydration Treatment Masque- 12oz

SheaMoisture is killing the game! If you don’t try nothing else from this list, you have to try this deep conditioner. Talk about moisture for your hair! The name intensive hydration is accurate! SheaMoisture did their thing with this product here! I feel like this masque will work for all hair types, but it is extremely thick. If you don’t like thick products, then you may want to skip this one.

This is my holy grail, because as I stated, the moisture it provides my hair is unlike any other product. This is def a product I can’t live without. It lives in my stash and I reach for it (and the other 2 that I’m going to mention) quite often. It is perfect for my dry, thick and coarse hair.

Off the SheaMoisture train, for now anyway. I fell in love with this deep conditioner the first time I used it. I love the tingling feeling it gives my scalp because of the peppermint oil, which is perfect to stimulate and promote hair growth.

This is my holy grail not only because of the way it makes my scalp feel, but also because it is pH balanced, it is lightweight and it makes my hair soft and manageable.

That’s why it’s good to experiment, but keep receipts. Because your hair may or may not like something. My hair just happened to fall in love with this experimental product. I feel like this product will work for every hair type, but my ladies with low porosity hair may not want to use this often because it does contain protein and most naturals with low porosity hair is protein sensitive. Related Articles: Low Porosity Regimen Tips & Top 5 Protein Free Leave-In Conditioners for Low Porosity Hair But for my high porosity ladies, this can be used weekly. I personally alternate between a moisturizing deep conditioner, pH balanced deep conditioner and a protein treatment/deep conditioner. It’s good to have these 3 different types of deep conditoners in your stash.

I have been using this product since the beginning of time, since my TWA days and I still use it faithfully til this day. I like how it reduces my breakage and to say it’s a strenghtening protein product, it makes my hair feel so soft, moisturized and manageable. I also love the sweet skittles smell.

It is gentle enough for my high porosity hair to be used weekly for each wash day in conjunction with a moisturizing hair masque, like the SheaMoisture Manuka Honey one that was just mentioned. If you are protein-sensitive, then I would recommend only using this once every 4-6 weeks.

This product is packed with keratin amino acids, hydrolyzed proteins, vitamins and oils. This product is def worth a try.

This ish right here is bae! Bae been rocking with me since month 2. I love the slip, the moisture and the way it makes my curls pop paired with any custard I use for my wash n go. This product is lightweight and don’t clash with any of the products I pair with it. I gravitate towards this one because I know it won’t cause any flakes. Related Article: How to Perfect a Wash N Go in 10 Easy Steps You know what’s funny about this product that I just realized a couple of months ago? It don’t contain any water! What??! Yes, girl. Babbbyyyy, the moisture! Those weeks when I’m being lazy and don’t want to style my hair, I use this product as my leave-in/ and I’m good for 3-4 days. This product is also good to pair with any twisting cream.

I love the versatility of this product. It can be paired with custards/gels, other creams and used alone as a moisturizer or twisting cream. It also contains a lot of my fav ingredients: shea butter, coconut oil, aloe leaf juice and protein. Defining Creams Camille Rose Naturals Jai Twisting Butter- 8oz

This is def my fav twisting cream this far on my journey. What I look for in my twisting creams is definition, hold, moisture and shine. And if a product elongates my hair on top of these 4 things, then I will love it. This product does all 5 of those things for my hair! I know when I use this product my hair would be coming out bomb. And I don’t even need a leave-in conditioner with this (even though I still use one sometimes). The only downside is the price. Man Camille Rose Naturals products are expensive.

This product is extremely thick and smells like cookies or cake batter. I love it! It doesn’t linger to me if you are sensitive to smells. The ingredients are all natural and the entire line is cruelty-free. It is said to work for all hair types, but especially perfect for my naturals with thick and coarse hair.

Ingredients: Deionized Water, Behentrimonium Methosulfate (Btms) Cetearyl Alcohol, Prunus Dulcis (Almond) Milk, Prunus Dulcis (Almond) Oil, Cucurbita Pepo (Pumpkin) Seed Oil, Sesamum Indicum (Sesame) Seed Oil, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Bran Oil, Macadamia Ternifolia (Macadamia Nut) Seed Oil, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Cannabis Sativa (Hemp) Seed Oil, Ulmus Fulva Bark Extract (Silippeey Elm), Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil/ Hydrogenated, Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe) Leaf Juice, Honey, Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract, Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol, Sorbic Acid, Scent And Love! Mielle Organics Pomegranate & Honey Twisting Souffle- 12oz

I know, I know, I haven’t used this products for years, but listen, I have tried a lot of twisting creams and this one stands out. I just did a thorough review on this product, along with the leave-in conditioner, so check it out here. But, to summarize my review, this product does everything I look for in a product besides providing shine. It gives me moisture, definition and hold. No elongation either, but I only look at that as brownie points.

I have only used this cream with the matching leave-in conditioner and the combo works great together. This product contains a couple of my fav ingredients and the smell is heavenly. Check it out, you may not regret it. Ingredients: Water (Aqua, Eau), Behentrimonium Methosulfate, Cetearyl Alcohol, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice (Decolorized), Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Sesamum Indicum (Sesame) Seed Oil, Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil, Polysorbate-20, Orbignya Oleifera (Babassu) Oil (Certified Organic Ingredient), Mauritia Flexuosa (Buriti) Fruit Oil (Certified Organic Ingredient), Copaiferi Officinalis (Balsam Copaiba) Resin (Certified Organic Ingredient), Astrocaryum Murumuru Seed Butter, Macadamia Integrifolia Seed Oil, Glyceryl Stearate, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Punica Granatum (Pomegranate) Extract, Tocopheryl Acetate, Fragrance (Parfum), Honey (Mel, Miel), Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Cetrimonium Chloride, Phenoxyethanol, Benzoic Acid, Ethylhexylglycerin, Glycereth-2 Cocoate. Curl Defining Custards Kinky Curly Curl Custard Gel- 8oz

My #1 baby. This is the gel I recommend to anyone trying to achieve a wash n go for the first time. This has also been rocking with me since month 2 like the matching leave-in I just previously mentioned and I will forever keep this in my stash.

Want some poppin, shiny, moisturized, non-frizzy curls that will last you all week? Get this! I haven’t tried any other gel that gives me the results these do and I honestly don’t think I will. The only thing this gel doesn’t do for my hair is elongate it. It also makes my hair a little crunchy, but I like the crunch because I know it will last and that’s nothing a lil oil can’t fix. I can scrunch out the crunch.

The ingredients are all natural, organic and the Kinky Curly brand itself is non- toxic and cruelty-free. Like the leave-in, this product also doesn’t contain water. Weird. The price isn’t the cheapest, but I don’t mind spending my money on quality products. Ingredients: Horsetail, chamomile, marshmallow, aloe vera, agave nectar extract, and vitamin E (condition and enhance shine); pectin (provides hold) Related Article: Top 5 Curl Defining Gels for Natural Hair Camille Rose Naturals Curl Maker- 12oz

This custard/gel is different from the kinky curly curling custard because this one leaves me with less tamed, uniformed curls. But that’s why I like it. I don’t need two gels in my stash doing the same exact thing and giving me the same results.

Those weeks when I want a more care-free, effortless curly fro, I will reach for this. The hold will last me about 3 days and I would more than likely co- wash and restyle or put my hair in a puff for the rest of the week. Related Article: Top 5 Co-Wash Conditioners + Can I Use My Regular Conditioner As a Co-Wash? Also, the thing about this gel is that even though my curls aren’t as popping as I would like by day 3, my hair is still moisturized.

The only thing I don’t care for about this gel is that it does give me a little residue in my hair by day 3. This gel can’t be paired with a lot of different leave-ins. I would either use the kinky curly knot today or the Camille Rose Naturals Curl Love Moisture Milk. Oh, one more thing I don’t like about this gel is the pump packaging. When you get down to the bottom, it’s hard to get product out so I have to open the packaging and dump the rest of the product out because I’m not letting a drop go to waste. This product is not cheap, ok!

Ingredients: Dionized Water, Pectin, Coco Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Panthenol, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Althaea Officinalis (Marshmallow) Root Extract, Agave American Leaf Extract, Equisetum Arvense (Horsetail) Extract, Uritca Dioica (Nettie) Leaf Extract, Corn Starch, Xanthan Gum, Chondrus (Seaweed) Crispus, Polysorbate 20, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Cyanocobalamin (Vitamin B-12), Phenoxyethanol (Optiphen Nd) Caprylyl Glycol, Fragrance (Parfum) And Love! Edge Control/Gel Curls Paste Blueberry- 4oz

Ahhh…the smell of this edge control! It smells like blueberries and I love it. I chose this as my holy grail because I like that I can use this daily and it doesn’t give me any product build up. I love the shine it provides and the way it makes my hair looks all slick and stuff. It provides a soft hold that lasts me all day. It won’t have your edges and baby hairs all laid like the girls you see on Instagram. But that’s why I love it. It also doesn’t give me any flakes. I’ve never used it to puff up my hair because I feel like I would have to use a lot and the packaging is already small. But, just using it on my edges daily, it lasts me a good while. I have been using this edge control for years and keep repurchasing it.

If you haven’t noticed a pattern yet, I pretty much gravitate towards all natural or mostly natural products. And this product is not different.

Ingredients: Water, Ceteareth-25, Peg-7 Glyceryl Cocoate, Vegetable Glycerin, Peg-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Keratin, Hydrolyzed Quinoa, Silk Amino Acids, Blueberry Fruit Extract, Shea Butter, Mango Seed Butter, Argan Kernal Oil, Evening Primrose Oil, Jojoba Esters, Hydroxypropyltrimonium Hydrolyzed Corn Starch, Tocopheryl Acetate, Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate, Potassium Sorbate, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance, Blue 1, Red 33. Eco Professional Styling Gel - 16oz

This is my baby for when I want my puff to be slayed or when I want more hold for my edges. That’s literally the only thing I use this gel for.

But, if I use it daily for a puff, it doesn’t give me any product build up, but as expected, it does dry my hair out. That is the main reason why I can’t use this gel for a wash n go. Talk about crunchy and dry hair! Chile, I can’t deal! The ingredients aren’t all natural and organic either, but it does have water as the first ingredient and contains hydrolyzed protein.

Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Carbomer, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Glycerin, Amino-2-Methyl-1-Propanol, Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate, Polysorbate 20, Tetrasodium EDTA, Olive Oil, Fragrance (Parfum), CI 19140 Yellow 5 – Love and Pride. Coconut oil is my oil of choice when doing the LOC Method. I love how lightweight it is, but still packs a good moisture punch. I scoop some out of the bottle with a spoon, put it in a microwave-safe bowl and melt it before I use it. I specifically love this one from Trader Joe’s because it is organic and extra virgin, easily accessible because I go to Trader Joe’s to grocery shop once a week or every other week, and because it is affordable. It is way more affordable in store than it is on Amazon. Find a Trader Joe’s near you here.

Trader Joe’s 100% Pure Jojoba Oil- 4oz

My overall favorite type of oil to use on my hair is jojoba oil because it is the oil that closely mimics the oil our hair naturally produces, called sebum. I use it on my scalp, the length of my hair and on my face as my daily moisturizer. I love how lightweight it is and the natural shine it provides. And a little goes a long way, so the small 4oz bottle lasts me a while.

I specifically like this one from Trader Joe’s because it is easily accessible, all natural and affordable. Not all jojoba oils are created equal. There are a lot of oils on the market that aren’t pure and is mixed with other ingredients.

Like the coconut oil, it is much cheaper in the store.

Ingredient: Pure Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil. Alikay Naturals Essential 17 Growth Oil- 8oz

I have been using this oil since I was transitioning, so over 4 years now. And I keep repurchasing it. This was the product that got me started with Alikay Naturals.

I absolutely love this oil because of all the essential oils that this product has and because it contains 100% organic ingredients. It contains 17 essentials oils and herbs to stimulate hair growth for all hair types. I love the tingling feeling it provides my scalp. I also love the packaging. It comes in an applicator bottle, perfect for oiling your scalp. Just get it, you won’t regret it.

Ingredients: Dromaius Novae-Hollandiae (Emu) Oil, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Oil, Horsetail Powder, Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Oil, Essential Oil Blend, Botanical Blend. Tropic Isle Living Jamaican Black Castor Oil With Lavender

I spoke about the benefits of lavender oil for hair growth in this post. Paired with the queen of hair growth, Jamaican Black Castor Oil, this is the perfect pair for hair growth. I love applying this oil mixture on my scalp and temples and giving myself a good ol scalp massage. I specifically love this one from Sunny Isle because it is authentic Jamaican Black Castor Oil and is 100% natural, with no salt added. A lot of other companies add a whole bunch of other stuff to their oils, as previously stated, but this one is the real deal.

Ingredients: Ricinus Communis (Castor Oil), Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Lavender Essential Oil Lily Of The Desert Aloe Vera Juice- 32oz

Aloe Vera Juice is good for all hair types because it regulates the pH balance in our hair and is especially good for high porosity hair because it smooths and closes our hair cuticles.

Aloe Vera Juice is also very moisturizing, because it is made up of mostly water, but also contains essential amino acids, vitamins, minerals and enzymes. It can be sprayed on your scalp and the length of your hair.

I use equal parts of the juice mixed with equal parts of water and put it in a spray bottle. I use it on wash day as the last step to close my cuticles and as a midweek re-moisturizer.

I love the Lily of the Desert brand because it is USDA certified organic and free.
