An artist who designed the Corn Palace murals. Crazy Horse A Native American chief. He was chosen to represent the Indians in a massive sculpture/monument in the Black Hills. George Washington First President of the United States. He is on Mount Rushmore George Custer Lt. Colonel who is known for fighting in the Battle of Little BigHorn. Theodore Roosevelt Teddy Bears are named after him. He is on Mount Rushmore. Abraham Lincoln This president is known for getting rid of slavery. He is on Mount Rushmore. Thomas Jefferson This president is known for the Louisiana Purchase. He is featured on Mount Rushmore. John. Todd John helped start the town of Yankton, SD. Known for his role in establishing Dakota Territory. He was a general during the Civil War. Laura Wilder Laura wrote Little House on the Prairie. Her father filed for a Homestead in Brookings, SD. Arthur C. Mellette Arthur was the first governor of the state of South Dakota. He turned over his personal fortune to help the state recover from losses caused by the dishonesty of the State Treasurer. Potato Creek Johnny He was quite the story teller. He is best known for panning big pieces of gold in the Black Hills. Frank Baum The author of the Wizard of Oz. He lived in Aberdeen, SD. Dennis Daugaard South Dakota’s governor before Kristi Noem took office. Lewis and Clark Lewis and Clark led an expedition to explore the land acquired through the Louisiana Purchase. Korczak Ziolkowski He was the sculptor of Crazy Horse Memorial in Black Hills, SD. Poker Alice This lady is famous from Deadwood, SD for being able to play a good hand of poker. Gutzon Borglum He was the sculptor of Mount Rushmore in the Black Hills. Many workers helped him. Hugh Glass He was a fur trader. He survived a 200 mile crawl to safety after an attack. .

His Mares of Diomedes was accepted by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. He did a large equestrian bronze of General Phil Sheridan which Theodore Roosevelt unveiled in Washington. He also created a memorial to Pickett’s Charge on the Gettysburg Battlefield.

Adrienne Marie Naylor 19 December 2008 Professor Green – Public History 2 ‘W HO W ERE THOSE PEOPLE?’ historian Howard Zinn asked a member of the Sacco and Vanzetti Commemoration Society in November 2008. Zinn had just delivered a lecture for the benefit of the Society on ‘The Meaning of Sacco and Vanzetti’ to a crowd of at least 250 people overflowing the Dante Alighieri Italian Cultural Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and was taken aback that interest in the case was still alive. ‘I didn’t know what to expect. I thought, how many people are still interested in Sacco and Vanzetti? Maybe seven? Ten? Fifteen? I can’t even — but this place is full!’1 Accustomed to smaller crowds composed of all the same familiar radical characters of Greater Boston, I, myself, was surprised at the size of the diverse and intergenerational crowd. I recognized less than half of the faces I saw; those belonged to friends and acquaintances involved with a broad array of social and ecological justice struggles. I was not immediately able to account for everyone else’s presence, which became a subject of discussion at the Society’s next meeting. Where did these people come from? Were the young ones Zinn’s students? Were the older ones the Dante’s regular crowd, interested in all things Italian? Were the middle-aged ones the archetypical Zinn-loving Cambridge liberals? Did they read about the event on Zinn’s website, or in the Globe or the Times? Scbuler outh Dakota citizens came out by the thousands to welcome thirteen presidents from 1899 to 1999. Flags and bunting float- Sed from rooftops and doorways, bands played, and bells rang to mark each gala occasion. Cheering crowds jammed parade routes and strained to catch sight of the president. A hol- iday atmosphere surrounded the visit of William McKinley, the first presidential visitor to the state, when an estimated one hun- dred thousand people gathered in city streets and at railroad depots to see him. The only nineteenth-centur>' president to visit South Dakota, McKinley was also the only president unaccom- panied by the Secret Service. Established in 1865 to investigate rampant counterfeiting, the agency was not charged with pro- tecting the president until after McKinley's assassination in 1901. Throughout the 1900s, presidential visits continued to be awe- inspiring public events, with thirty-six South Dakota cities host- ing at least one president. More than patriotic pageantry for just one man, these visits were also the story of a traveling White House amidst a swirl of Secret Service security, press corps, and politics. William McKinley, 14 October 1899 n the third year of his presidency. William McKinley agreed to visit South Dakota on 14 October 1899 as a part of a mid- Iwestern tour. Mount Rushmore Mount Rushmore Is a National Monument Located in the Black Hills of South Dakota
5th(5) Mount Rushmore Mount Rushmore is a national monument located in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Carved into the side of the large mountain are the faces of four men who were United States presidents. These men were chosen because all four played important roles in American history. The four faces carved onto Mount Rushmore are those of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt. Each face carved into the mountain is about 60 feet tall. George Washington was chosen for this monument because of his role in the Revolutionary War and his fight for American independence. He was the first United States president and is often called the father of our country. Thomas Jefferson was picked because he believed that people should be allowed to govern themselves, which is the basis for democracy. Abraham Lincoln was added because he believed that all people are equal, and he helped end slavery in the United States. Theodore Roosevelt was chosen because he was such an influential president and world leader. The man who carved Mount Rushmore was named Gutzon Borglum, and he worked on the monument until his death in 1941. After Gutzon Borglum died, his son Lincoln Borglum worked on the mountain until there was no money left to continue. Fourteen years were spent creating the faces on Mount Rushmore. Dynamite was used to blast the tough granite rock off the mountain to make a smooth surface for the faces. George Washington was carved first, and his face began as an egg-shaped piece of granite.

MOUNT RUSHMORE National Memorial THE SHRINE OF DEMOCRACY It is the greatness of the world's adventure that gives us the subject matter for our colossal carvings. It was ,the 'greatness of the awakened mind, the freed heart of the Italian Renaissance, that surged over Europe, freeing the hearts and souls of men, shaking off the centuries-old slaver ies fled westward, and here founded free institutions. Few races have contributed immortal service to civilization. America has; America has lived profoundly-and in that living made immortal contributions to civilization-her struggle out of the Puritan chrysalis to the Declaration of lndependence,-the war between the states over the interpretation of the Constitution,-America's return to save Europe and civilization. In the first she has written into the blue heavens that "man has a right to be free and to be happy." Unburdened by encumbering verbiage, these eleven words have changed the government of the world. These eleven words are the heart and soul of western civilization. These eleven words are the motive back of the Mount Rushmore National Memorial, which we are now carving in the Black Hills of South Dakota, commemorating America's political accomplishment dedicated by Presi dent Franklin D. Roosevelt as a shrine to Democracy. These eleven words and their potential meaning to civilization would justify their being carved in gold in the dimensions we are cutting them in granite. We are not creating a monument to Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, or Roosevelt but to the meaning of these eleven words as developed into and main tained in a national government BY THESE FOUR GREAT NATIONAL LEADERS.

BRILEY On a mountainside in South Dakota, the gifted, yet temperamental artist and sculptor Gutzon Borglum created the massive presiden- tial monuments of Mount Rushmore. In sculpting the carvings of Presidents George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jeffer- son, and Theodore Roosevelt, Borglum had not only to grapple with the harsh Dakota environment but also to weather artistic and fi- nancial controversies with his sponsors in South Dakota and Con- gress. Borglum met the rigors of the task and forever linked his name with the state and the Shrine to Democracy. Yet, Mount Rushmore was by no means Borglum's first or only involvement with the Dakotas. In 1922, he played a key role in the political contests of North Dakota, helping to advance the agrarian reform movement that has become a hallmark of that state. In the early 1920s, the multifarious Borglum was living on his estate in Stamford, Connecticut, and working on war memorials for the Italian government, but his interests ranged beyond the confines of the artistic world and geographical boundaries of New England. Borglum, who considered himself an anti-establishment artist, was frequently embroiled in artistic and political disputes. A progressive Republican, he had formed a favorable opinion of North Dakota farmers supporting the candidacy of Robert LaFollette at the 1916 GOP convention. Crazy Horse, S.D
Aug. 27, 2006 CRAZY HORSE MEMORIAL, S.D. -- The young reach for the stars. Every road is a magic carpet. Over time some warriors fall behind clouds, others get swept away in storms. But Ruth Ziolkowski is a lucky woman. She has lived in the heavens above the Black Hills. Ruth is the widow of Korczak Ziolkowski, a sculptor who dreamed big. On June 3, 1948, Korczak began carving the likeness of Oglala Lakota leader Crazy Horse into a granite mountain in the southern Black Hills, about 45 miles southwest of Rapid City. Korczak died in 1982. The work is still under way, and Ruth wears his dream like a ring around her ﬁnger. During my June 27 visit to the Crazy Horse Memorial, the constellations aligned. Unbeknownst to me, June 26 was Ruth's 80th birthday. And June 25 was the 130th anniversary of the Battle of the Little Bighorn, where Crazy Horse, Touch the Clouds (who stood nearly 7 feet tall) and Lakota and Cheyenne warriors defeated Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer and his 7th Cavalry. Custer and his troops invaded Lakota territory after Indian inspectors claimed Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull were hostile to the United States. In the two-day battle, Custer and the 200 men he commanded were killed. It was a stirring victory for the Indian nation. On June 27, descendents of Crazy Horse were visiting the site in commemoration of the Battle of Little Bighorn. Every four years they make an annual 13-day pilgrimage on horseback to Crazy Horse from the battle site, 313 miles away.

The memorial has a direct connection to American expansionism in the Black Hills, land that originally belonged to the Lakota. Historians have thoroughly analyzed the history of Mount Rushmore, the history of the Lakota in the Black Hills, and Mount Rushmore’s symbolism as a contested sacred space. However, the public perceptions of Mount Rushmore in relationship to Mount Rushmore’s meaning on the American landscape have not been thoroughly considered. Thus, this paper uses the New York Times and the Madison Capital Times to understand how Mount Rushmore was discussed by the American public outside of South Dakota both during its carving, from 1924 to 1941, and fifty years later, from 1974 to 1991. With consideration of the Mount Rushmore National Memorial Commission publications, this paper uncovers how public perceptions sometimes reflected the patriotic rhetoric of Mount Rushmore’s presentation, the monument’s development as a national and popular culture symbol, and a tendency for Americans to question its legitimacy.
