Burnham Date Approved: April 8, 2016 ii ABSTRACT Among living mammals, bats (Chiroptera) are second only to rodents in total number of species with over 1100 currently known. Extant bat species occupy many trophic niches and feeding habits, including frugivores (fruit eaters), insectivores (insect eaters), nectarivores (nectar and pollen-eaters), carnivores (predators of small terrestrial vertebrates), piscivores (fish eaters), sanguinivores (blood eaters), and omnivores (eat animals and plant material). Modern bats also demonstrate a wide range of terrestrial abilities while feeding, including: (1) those that primarily feed at or near ground level, such as the common vampire bat (Desmodus rotundus) and the New Zealand short-tailed bat (Mystacina tuberculata); (2) those rarely observed to feed from or otherwise spend time on the ground; and (3) many intermediate forms that demonstrate terrestrial competency without an obvious ecological basis. The variation in chiropteran terrestrial ability has been hypothesized to be constrained by the morphology of the pelvis and hindlimbs into what are termed types 1, 2, and 3 bats. -

Presentamos información sobre la distribución geográfica, morfología y reproducción de Vampyriscus nymphaea en Colombia, basándonos en la revisión de especímenes museológicos de co- lecciones colombianas. Previamente la distribución de V. nymphaea en Colombia se consideraba res- tringida a las tierras bajas al occidente de la cordillera Occidental en la región Pacífico; en este trabajo confirmamos la presencia de esta especie en la región Caribe y en el nororiente de la cordillera Occiden- tal de los Andes colombianos en el Bajo Río Cauca. La morfología externa y craneana de la especie fue homogénea y el análisis de dimorfismo sexual secundario de las poblaciones de la región Pacífico no mostró diferencias significativas, sin embargo la longitud de la tibia y la profundidad de la caja craneana son proporcionalmente mayores en los machos y el ancho zigomático en las hembras. -

Adult females were captured monthly by mist net, during two consecutive nights from June/2014 to November/2015. The meteorological data were provided by the National Institute of Meteorology and grouped together with the reproductive data, in six periods: period I (June to August/2014), period II (Sep- tember to November/2014), period III (December/2014 to February/2015), period IV (March to May/2015), period V (June to August/2015) and period VI (September to Inactive, pregnant, lactating and postlactating. -

Laboratorio de Ecología Funciona, Facultad de Ciencias, Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, Bogotá, Colombia Abstract Introduction: Bats have become an epidemiologically significant source of pathogenic microorganisms, such as leptospires, the causative agents of leptospirosis. However, little information exists about bats and their potential role as a reservoir of pathogenic Leptospira spp. in Colombia. The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of pathogenic Leptospira spp. in the kidneys of bats from the Caribbean region of Colombia deposited in the collection of mammals of the Museo Javeriano de Historia Natural (MPUJ-MAMM). Methodology: DNA was extracted from twenty-six kidney samples from a total of 13 species of bats captured in Colombia. First, 16S ribosomal RNA conventional PCR was performed to detect the presence of Leptospira spp. Then, in samples that tested positive, LipL32 PCR was performed to detect pathogenic Leptospira spp. by sequencing and phylogenetic analysis. Results: The presence of Leptospira spp. was observed in 7/26 (26.9%) bats from the following 6 species: Carollia perspicillata, Glossophaga soricina, Dermanura phaeotis, Uroderma bilobatum, Desmodus rotundus, and Lophostoma silvicolum, and pathogenic Leptospira spp. were detected in 4/26 samples (15.4%). Conclusions: This study suggests that bats present in the Caribbean region of Colombia could be potential reservoirs of pathogenic Leptospira spp. Key words: Leptospira spp.; bats; zoonotic disease; leptospirosis. -

BAKE R AB STRACT Approximately 24 species classified in three groups (Artibeus, Dermanura, and Koopma- nia) compose Subtribe Artibeina, an assemblage of New World leaf-nosed bats (Phyllostomidae) for which evolutionary relationships have proven difficult to resolve. We examined artibeine systematics through broad taxonomic sampling and phylogenetic analysis of DNA sequences for two mitochondrial genes. Analysis of 16S rRNA sequences offered an additional test of previous genealogical hypotheses, and facilitated knowledge about the congruence in variation between the well studied cytochrome-b gene and the evolutionary history of this complex of bats. Our results illustrate a high degree of congruence between these linked mitochondrial loci that in combination offers a well resolved gene tree and robust predictions to all but a few of the examined relationships. Highlights include: monophyly of Artibeina in contrast to previous hypotheses of polyphyly; two main lineages within Artibeina in accordance with monophyly of the smaller Dermanura species and larger Artibeus species; sister relationship between A. concolor and other Artibeus species rather than with Dermanura, contrasting the argument for recognizing A. concolor as a separate genus (Koopmania); reconfirmation of several species formerly considered subspecies (A. planirostris, A. schwartzi, D. bogotensis, D. rava, and D. rosenbergi); and further indication that A. -
