Institute of Nano Science and Technology (INST), an autonomous institute established by Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of , has started an outreach programme in the year 2014 especially targeted to schools in rural/semi-urban areas, primarily being run by government agencies with an objective to encourage students not only to pursue a career in science but to dream big, emulate great personalities and work for the over-all development of these e areas with participation of youth. As education policy documents have repeatedly stressed, the challenge facing school is of quality. The quality of education depends critically on students having exposure to teachers who can motivate and make classrooms an enjoyable place where the seeds are sown. 41% of India (2011 census) is below the age of 20 and a large fraction is in the Messag rural areas. Out of 1.3 billion Indians approximately 8.5 billion Indians live in rural areas. We persist with our conviction of promoting science in the remotest parts of India. The Outreach program has also embarked upon an exciting project in which various young people from schools and colleges across the country are identified and attend workshops in our Institute which gives exposure to the vast possibilities in modern science as well as opens up the opportunity for interaction with scientists and technologists. This year (2016-17) several new places have also been targeted like Majuli, Gangtok, Coimbatore, Jamshedpur, , Malda and Chennai along with other states which were part of our program in last two years. The report presents a broad range of activities that have taken place in the third year (2016-17) of our outreach programme. I appreciate the sincere efforts of our outreach team for their wholehearted support and enthusiasm. We have an additional program, where faculty going back on holiday to their (Holiday-outreach) native places make a point to interact with local schools. All this allows us to carry out our activities with limited funding. We will continue our efforts with enhanced zeal with the encouragement from all our well-wishers and hope our work will make a ripple in the vast sea of illiteracy and backwardness existing in the remote parts of our country and the ripple may one day bring a wave to transform the children to contributors to our society for a brighter tomorrow. 24 Outreach at INST

Among the outreach program organized by INST, outreach at INST is a unique and special programme, mainly because the students have the opportunity to visit several different laboratories of INST located in different institutions like, INST, IISER, Panjab University, and DIHAR, including other institutes labs like IISER, CIAB, NABI, etc. More importantly, The Faraday laboratory located in INST Mohali houses the state-of-the-art instruments to analyze and characterize the nanomaterials. This exposure helps us to take the students to nano- world in reality. Visit to these labs students gain a new and unforgettable experience, which in turn make them inspire towards science. This is also corroborated by the feedback obtained from the visited students. During the workshop our graduate students responsible for the individual instruments give a brief introduction about how these interments being used for research activities. Not only students, teachers who accompany the students also gain this Students Benefitted Region in 2016-2017 at t INST knowledge, which will be useful for them to nurture future INST Mohali

Outreach at INST A special four days' workshop was organized on S&T exposure for Jammu and Kashmir students in collaboration with JK RAMSA Directorate. In this workshop 30 meritorious students (two students from one district in J&K) and 3 teachers were attended. The workshop combined both technical programme and city tour to expose them about cleanliness of the city. A workshop entitled “Vigyan Manthan Yatra-2016” under M.P. Mission Excellence Programme was organized on 18th October 2016 to arrange a visit of students and teachers to at INST and interaction with our scientists. The workshop was attended by a total of 125 meritorious students and 10 teachers pooled from different parts Madhya Pradesh state.

Nano for Children workshop was conducted every year and has designed to introduce young minds of school children to the enormous potential and exciting phenomena which exist in nature.

A group of 19 Biotech college students and three faculty members from TERI University was visited our laboratory facility on 27th February 2017. They have been exposed with the state-of-the art techniques being used in today's science. Furthermore, we are trying to float a new concept of PAN-INDIA e-Outreach programme. In this programme, the existing outreach programme will be live-streamed through various parts of India. h eac ST Outr
