Green, Director of the National Human Genome Research Institute as a representative of the “Human Genome Project” (PMA in the field of Medicine) and Professor Porter W. Anderson, Jr., Dr. John B. Robbins, Dr. Rachel Schneerson, Professor Mathuram Santosham (PMA in the field of Public Health), the Prince Mahidol Award Laureates 2017, to visit Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, the host and founder of Prince Mahidol Award (PMA), and to deliver the special lectures demonstrating their rewarded contributions at the Rachapanaddasirindhorn Auditorium, Srisavarindhira Building. On this occasion, the Laureates joined the Faculty Luncheon hosted by Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital along with Siriraj Faculty members and Prince Mahidol Award’s Committees at the Faculty Conference room, Administration Building. 2 VOL19.indd 2 6/20/18 9:39 PM SIMPIC 2018 The 7th Siriraj International Medical Microbiology, Parasitology and Immunology Competition (SIMPIC 2018) On March 16th, 2018, Professor Dr. Prasit Watanapa, Dean of Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital presided over the 7th Siriraj International Medical Microbiology, Parasitology and Immunology Competition (SIMPIC 2018) at Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University. SIMPIC is an international platform for medical students to challenge themselves, get to know each others, and find inspiration. It is also a competition for medical students around the world who have an interest in infectious medicine, and have preferably finished their preclinical microbiology, immunology, and parasitology courses. In this year of SIMPIC, we would like to congratulate Universitas Gadjah Mada, Team 1, Indonesia on the first prize of the competition. Moll, a visiting scholar of Division of Vascular Surgery, Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital held a discussion on “Experience for Journal Editor” for Siriraj Medical Journal (SMJ) at Siriraj Medical Research Center. 5 VOL19.indd 5 6/20/18 9:39 PM Memorandum of Understanding MOU between Siriraj and Jiangsu Province Hospital, China On March 28th, 2018, Siriraj executive members led by Professor Dr. Prasit Watanapa, Dean of Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital visited Jiangsu Province Hospital of TCM, PRC. The group received a very warm welcome by Professor Zhai Yuxiang, Party Secretary and team. The MOU highlights the collaboration in the fields of education, research and academic services between Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University and Jiangsu Province Hospital of TCM. On this occasion, we are honored to have Ms. Ranoppun Kapitta, Acting Consul General from Royal Thai Consulate-General, Shanghai witnessed the signing ceremony ! Siriraj Signed MOU with Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital, China On March 28th, 2018, Siriraj executive members led by Professor Dr. Prasit Watanapa, Dean of Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital visited Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital. The group received a very warm welcome by Dr. HAN Guangshu, President and team. The MOU was signed and committed both institutes to working together towards academic and educational exchange for mutual benefits. MOU Signing Ceremony between Siriraj and Johnson & Johnson on the Establishment of Center of Excellence in Minimal Invasive Surgery! We are delighted to announce that we’ve signed the MOU with Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical company to work together on the establishment of the so called “Center of Excellence in Minimal Invasive Surgery”!!! The MOU has been signed on March 7th, 2018 by Professor Dr. Prasit Watanapa, Dean of Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital and Mr. Vaibhav Saran, Managing Director of Johnson & Johnson, Thailand & Emerging territories. School of Public Health, University of Sydney, NSW, Australia Background The environments in which we live are strongly influenced by economic, social and political forces. These forces manifest in the built environment and influence the ability of people and communities to access the resources and systems that they need to live healthy and equitable lives and to participate in decisions about the nature of cities. As such, urban planning has considerable potential as a tool to lower non-communicable disease (NCD) risk within populations through use of urban design strategies and practices that are conducive to wellbeing and empowerment. This paper reports findings from research that assessed the extent to which Australian urban planning policies support the creation of healthy, low NCD risk environments through action on the social determinants of health and equity (SDH/E). The paper commences with a brief overview of the links between the features of urban environments and NCD risk, before a description of the research methods and analysis of the policies are presented. Drawing on the existing evidence and the research findings, the discussion then provides an inventory of key considerations that may facilitate urban design and planning in Low and Middle Income Countries (LMIC) to lower NCD risk.

Now in its 7th year, the Symposium has been co-organized with University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) Health, becoming the 1st Joint Symposium in Fetal Cardiology. The Symposium brought together speakers from Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital and UCLA Health, as well as other partners, including Mark S Sklansky, MD, Professor and Chief of Pediatric Cardiology, Mattel Children’s Hospital, UCLA; and Norman H Silverman, MD, Professor of Pediatrics (Cardiology), Stanford University School of Medicine. This first Joint Symposium, on 17th and 18th February 2020, was focused around the theme of Echocariographic- pathologic Correlation of Fetal Heart Diseases, and combined didactic presentations with hands-on workshops, covering a wide variety of pathological, diagnostic, and treatment issues for those in the field. Mahidol University – University of Canterbury Internship Program 2020 From 9th January to 11th February 2020, Mahidol University welcomed the 7th group of students from University of Canterbury (UC), New Zealand, to take part in the Mahidol University – University of Canterbury (MUUC) Internship Program.     THE POLITICAL ECONOMY OF NCDS A WHOLE OF SOCIETY APPROACH | BACKGROUND The Prince Mahidol Award Conference (PMAC) is an annual international conference focusing on policy-related health issues. The PMAC 2019 is co-hosted by the Prince Mahidol Award Foundation, the Thai Ministry of Public Health, Mahidol University, the World Health Organization, The World Bank, U.S. Agency for International Development, Japan International Cooperation Agency, The Rockefeller Foundation, with support from other key related partners. The Conference will be held in Bangkok, Thailand, from 29 January – 3 February 2019. The theme of the conference is “The Political Economy of NCDs: A Whole of Society Approach”. NCDS: CRITICAL HEALTH AGENDA AROUND THE WORLD More than a decade into the 21st century, the health community is grappling with epidemiological and demographic transitions. In this regard, noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) have overtaken infectious diseases as the leading cause of mortality globally. This shift challenges traditional development thinking, which has long focused primarily on infectious diseases and maternal and child mortality as priorities for international actions. While continuing to combat infectious diseases and maternal and child conditions, the world needs to address the emerging NCD challenges. Besides, it is imperative to explore and analyze why we still make a slow progress in addressing NCDs despite a number of global and national commitments. NCDs, which include cardiovascular diseases (CVD), cancer, diabetes and chronic respiratory diseases, are the leading cause of death and a prominent cause of disability worldwide, accounting for more than 36 million lives lost each year and 15 million premature deaths. Moreover, around 70% of the world’s poor now live in low and middle-income countries, where economic growth and modernization have opened wide the entry point for the spread of unhealthy lifestyles.

Large coverage gaps remain in many parts of the world, in particular for the poor and marginalized segments of the population, as well as in fragile and conflict-affected states.

The &oundation annually confers two Prince Mahidol Awards upon individual(s) or institution(s), which have demonstrated outstanding and exemplary contributions to the advancement of the worlds medical and public health services.
