“A culture of achievement in a respectful and rigorous Page 5 of 7 learning environment”. THE PAINTING OF ROOM 21 YEAR 9 GERMAN EXCURSION On Tuesday 5 December, our class came together as a whole TO THE BAROSSA VALLEY group and measured the area of the walls from below the Last week Mrs Millar’s German class travelled to the Barossa windows. Each shape was a rectangle. We measured the length Valley to find out about the history of German settlement in the and width and then calculated the area of each rectangle by Barossa and a little of what life was like for those settlers in the multiplying the length by the width. All of the 8 areas came to a 1800s and early 1900s. total of 30.78 metres squared. On the paint tub, it said you needed 1 litre of paint for each 16 square metres. We therefore needed about 2 litres of paint. However you need to allow for some extra because the bristles and rollers absorb some of the paint. We decided to allow for 20% extra, which was 0.4L, needing a total of 2.4L to paint the classroom.

Students were able to read the old German script on headstones in the Bethany cemetery and were sad to see how many young children had not survived into adulthood. They also saw the Ziegenmarkt, the square where the settlers used to meet, trade and discuss issues and events and learnt how, during the world Planning the area Drop Sheet wars, all use of the German language was banned. Anyone who We had a drop sheet and had to cut that by folding it in half first has been to Seppeltsfield will have passed through the little like a bedsheet. After we had placed the drop sheets down on the settlement of Marananga and here the students saw evidence floor, we then had to place masking tape around the edges of the that even place names had been changed. classroom so that we didn't get any paint on the skirting boards nor on the power points. When we calculated the amount of paint we needed 2.4 litres. We had two trays for painting so split that in half and each tray had 1.2 litres of paint in it. The boys painted two walls and the girls painted the other two. We used the brushes to paint the edges and the little gaps that the roller couldn’t get to. The painting was done in about 45 minutes as we had done some great preparation.

In the Tanunda museum and in Luhr’s Cottage students saw artefacts from those early days and tried to imagine what it must have been like to live so long ago. No-one was keen to re-enact the experience of living in the Herbig family tree. Students were able to try German food from the Tanunda bakery, although some preferred the lolly shop and fish and chips. Thanks to Mr Hitch for driving the bus. A good time was had by all.

Taping up Pouring Paint

We used the exact amount of paint that we calculated! At the end of the lesson we spent 15 minutes cleaning the brushes, the rollers and the trays. There were a few drips on the floor, skirting board and window frames but we managed to get most of that off. The painting of room 21 was a fun and educational experience.
