In particular the volunteers whose tireless efforts do not go unnoticed. You are valued and irreplaceable members of the swimming community. The cornerstone to the success of our sport is the community we build together and thanks to the contribution of the broader swimming family the 2015-16 year has been a hectic year of activity in SA and we have enjoyed success in and out of the water. Again, our year kicked off with a bang at the 2015 SC Championships in July when we repeated the successful 2014 Championship format and exciting Relay Day activities. We saw improvement in both participation numbers and performance level of SA swimmers at both the State Long Course and Country Championships in January 2016. There were also over 50 records established during the Championship Meets. South Australia performed well at the 2016 Australian Age & Open Championships and we hosted the very successful Olympic Trials in Adelaide in April 2016. Congratulations to Kyle Chalmers and Josh Palmer who were selected for the Australian Olympic Team and represented SA with pride and distinction. Kyle made history by becoming the Olympic Champion in the men’s 100 freestyle, a feat not achieved by an Australian athlete since Michael Wenden in 1968. Josh’s selection and performance in Rio ensured he will wear the title of Olympian for life. Jesse Aungles and Liam Bekric earned selection to the Australian Paralympic Team and performed well in the ensuring competition. The SA Swimming Community also contributed to the Paralympic Swim Team with the selection of three staff members –Michelle Doyle (Team Manager), Jennie Phillips-Hughes (Carer) and David Spurrier (Physio) all who received glowing reports of their performance at the event. London Olympian, Sally Hunter announced her retirement after a stellar career as an athlete. She has been appointed to the Swimming SA Board and brings her experiences as an elite athlete to the Board table. Sally joins Olympians Phil Rogers and Neil Martin on our Board. How many sporting organizations can claim three Olympians on their governing body? Out of the water, SwimmingSA continued its governance review with the aim to ensure the sport is sustainable to progresses successfully into the future. Good governance practices are essential for our organisation to function effectively. SwimmingSA is committed to ensure best practice governance for the sport and with the assistance of the Office for Recreation and Sport, the Board continues to develop and pursue a philosophy of good governance and continuous improvement. Progress has been evident across many areas of the organisation and together with our fellow State Associations and Swimming Australia, we have begun the process of invigorating the organised participation area. It is vital that we get it right and continue to strengthen the base of our sport – the people! SwimmingSA made two new staff appointments during the year to assist in the club area – Tanya Matic (Membership Officer) and Daniel Lawlor (Club Development Officer) and believe this has been of great value to the districts and clubs. One of the many activities conducted by Dan and the SwimmingSA Directors during the year was the visits to clubs – the directors were encouraged to see first hand the continued volunteer dedication at clubs and we hope to receive more reports of club activities and visit clubs in the coming year. Remember if your club wants or needs assistance – chat to Dan or Tanya! 4 In partnership with Swimming Australia and the South Australian Sports Institute SwimmingSA continued the employment of Leigh Nugent as the Mentor Coach and we are progressing a review of this program and maintain enthusiasm for reinvigorating this partnership for the new quadrennium through to 2020 in the coming months. Along with the new quadrennium comes a review for SwimmingSA of our strategic plan – a major activity that will be undertaken in 2016-17 we look forward to input from our members in the development of the 2020 plan. As we continue to recognise the importance of People to this great sport - Thank you to our directors, officers, staff and committee members for their continued efforts and commitment to swimming in South Australia over the 2015-2016 period. As custodians of the number #1 Olympic and Paralympic sport in South Australia we recognise there are many people who make our sport so successful from learn to swim to elite competition and it is virtually impossible to thank you all in this reflection however we take this opportunity to single out one member – Sue Edwards who retired from the SwimmingSA Board this year after 8years of service. For those of you who do not know Sue, she has been instrumental in the Country region with her role as chair of the revitalised country committee, has been seen on pool deck as an official at numerous meets and has dedicated her time to strengthening the sport – we hope you enjoy your retirement Sue. Finally in closing SwimmingSA thanks our key partners Swimming Australia, Office for Recreation and Sport, SASI and SAALC for their ongoing support and we look forward to an exciting period ahead with the recently launched partnership with Optus and their association with the Optus Junior Dolphins Program. The significant sponsorship investment being negotiated by Swimming Australia with Optus is very promising and will provide many grass roots activities in the years to come – Thanks and Welcome to the sport Optus.
