Gillette Museum of Arthropod Diversity, Department of Bioagricultural Sciences and Pest Management Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO 80523 Abstract A list of 1531 species ofLepidoptera is presented, collected over 15 years (1988 to 2002), in eleven southern West Virginia counties. A variety of collecting methods was used, including netting, light attracting, light trapping and pheromone trapping. The specimens were identified by the currently available pictorial sources and determination keys. Many were also sent to specialists for confirmation or identification. The majority of the data was from Kanawha County, reflecting the area of more intensive sampling effort by the senior author. This imbalance of data between Kanawha County and other counties should even out with further sampling of the area. Key Words: Appalachian Mountains, -

CHECKLIST of WISCONSIN MOTHS (Superfamilies Mimallonoidea, Drepanoidea, Lasiocampoidea, Bombycoidea, Geometroidea, and Noctuoidea)
WISCONSIN ENTOMOLOGICAL SOCIETY SPECIAL PUBLICATION No. 6 JUNE 2018 CHECKLIST OF WISCONSIN MOTHS (Superfamilies Mimallonoidea, Drepanoidea, Lasiocampoidea, Bombycoidea, Geometroidea, and Noctuoidea) Leslie A. Ferge,1 George J. Balogh2 and Kyle E. Johnson3 ABSTRACT A total of 1284 species representing the thirteen families comprising the present checklist have been documented in Wisconsin, including 293 species of Geometridae, 252 species of Erebidae and 584 species of Noctuidae. Distributions are summarized using the six major natural divisions of Wisconsin; adult flight periods and statuses within the state are also reported. Examples of Wisconsin’s diverse native habitat types in each of the natural divisions have been systematically inventoried, and species associated with specialized habitats such as peatland, prairie, barrens and dunes are listed. INTRODUCTION This list is an updated version of the Wisconsin moth checklist by Ferge & Balogh (2000). A considerable amount of new information from has been accumulated in the 18 years since that initial publication. Over sixty species have been added, bringing the total to 1284 in the thirteen families comprising this checklist. These families are estimated to comprise approximately one-half of the state’s total moth fauna. Historical records of Wisconsin moths are relatively meager. Checklists including Wisconsin moths were compiled by Hoy (1883), Rauterberg (1900), Fernekes (1906) and Muttkowski (1907). Hoy's list was restricted to Racine County, the others to Milwaukee County. Records from these publications are of historical interest, but unfortunately few verifiable voucher specimens exist. Unverifiable identifications and minimal label data associated with older museum specimens limit the usefulness of this information. Covell (1970) compiled records of 222 Geometridae species, based on his examination of specimens representing at least 30 counties. -

Expansion of suburbia is often coupled with replacement of native plants by alien ornamental plants such as crepe myrtle, Bradford pear, and Japanese maple. Two projects were conducted for this thesis. The purpose of the first project (Chapter 2) was to conduct an analysis of existing larval Lepidoptera and Symphyta hostplant records in the southeastern United States, comparing their species richness on common native and alien woody plants. We found that, in most cases, native plants support more species of eruciform larvae compared to aliens. Alien congener plant species (those in the same genus as native species) supported more species of larvae than alien, non-congeners. Most of the larvae that feed on alien plants are generalist species. However, most of the specialist species feeding on alien plants use congeners of native plants, providing evidence of a spillover, or false spillover, effect. -

LA GESSE And JAMES R.WIKER Adjunct Research Associates Zoology Department Illinois State Museum Springfield, Illinois 217-525-1410 [email protected] I Siloam Springs State Park, Adams/Brown County, Illinois Insect Survey 1997-2000 Introduction Approximately 2000 species of Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths) occur in Illinois. These species are important to the ecosystem because of their association with the flora of this area. The larval stages are primary plant consumers, and the adult forms are pollinators. In addition, they are a common food resource for many species of birds, mammals and other arthropods. Many species, especially those restricted by host plant requirements, serve as indirect indicators of habitat quality (LaGesse et al. 1996). With the current interest in land management and maintaining plant and animal diversity, a formal insect survey was conducted . During the growing season of 1997 through 1999, 15 diurnal and 9 nocturnal surveys for Lepidoptera were performed over a three-year period by the senior author. Materials and Methods Prairies (mesic to dry), oak- hickory woodlands, oak barrens stream/creek edges and the lake communities were sampled at Siloam Springs State Park . Insects were sampled by various methods. Sampling included capture and release of species easily identified and preservation of voucher representatives to confirm identification of species . All voucher specimens will be deposited with the author's collection or the Illinois State Museum (ISM), Springfield, Illinois . -

Preliminary Assessment of the Moth (Lepidoptera: Heterocera) Fauna of Rincon de Guadalupe, Sierra de Bacadéhuachi, Sonora, Mexico John D. Palting Department of Entomology, University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona Abstract—The Sierra de Bacadéhuachi is a poorly sampled extension of the Sierra Madre Occidental (SMO) located in east-central Sonora near the town of Bacadéhuachi. Sampling of moths using mercury vapor and ultraviolet lights occurred in summer and fall 2011, and spring 2012 at Rincón de Guadalupe, located in pine-oak forest at 1680 m elevation. Approximately 400 taxa of moths were identified from this locality. Species occurrences demonstrate connections to the famously diverse Yécora area, to the higher, more me- sic SMO in Chihuahua, as well as the Rocky Mountains to the north. Several unidentified and presumably new moth species from Rincón de Guadalupe await further study and description. Two species previously known only from the type specimens (destroyed in WWII) were rediscovered at Rincón de Guadalupe. A complete list of the moths identified from Rincon de Guadalupe is available as a Research Species List in the Madrean Archipelago Biodiversity Assessment (MABA)/Southwest Environmental Information Network (SEINet) online database (Madrean.org). Although they are widespread throughout the mid-West, in this part of the country they are • • • considered a fugitive species-as the name implies, here today, and mysteriously gone tomorrow. Habitat requirements seem to dictate the length of their stay but are poorly understood. In April and May 2011 , thanks to Irving Finkelstein's years of experience and his gracious generosity, Sara Bright and I were able to explore the habitat and lifestyle of Gorgone Checkerspots at Cooper's Furnace Day Use Area near Clarksville, Georgia. Cooper's Furnace Day Use Area is located on the banks of the Etowah River, near Altoona Dam. Currently operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, it served as an antebellum industrial center and is on the National Registry of Historic Places. Its trails wind through a lovely mixed pine and hardwood forest complete with mountain overlooks, picturesque streams, and a beaver pond. Irving has a long history with this site. In the mid-1970s when he decided to explore natural areas within a 50-mile radius of his new home in Atlanta, one reconnaissance mission took him to the Cooper's Furnace area where he was delighted to discover a colony of Gorgone Checkerspots. -

United States Department of Organisms of the Agriculture Forest Service Hubbard Brook Valley, Northeastern New Hampshire Research Station General Technical Report NE-257 Abstract Lists the organisms, both plant and animal, that have been identified by scientists engaged in multidisciplinary ecological research in the Hubbard Brook Valley, New Hampshire, during the past three decades. The Valley encompasses the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, Mirror Lake, and other areas within the White Mountain region of Grafton County. The species lists included in this report are relatively complete for vascular plants, amphibians, birds, fish, mammals, phytoplankton, and zooplankton, and partially complete for insects, molluscs, and nonvascular plants.
